On February 6, 2024, at approximately 3 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) responded to a 911 call reporting a man in distress at a residence near Edgewater Drive and Davisson Avenue in Fairview Shores, Florida.

Two deputies arrived at the residence, encountering 43-year-old Decarlos Cornelius Long emerging from the home. Police alleged that he was holding a large kitchen knife and claim to have ordered him to drop it, stating that Long appeared "extremely agitated." Police further alleged that Long moved toward them. Both deputies opened fire, striking him. Long was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff John Mina confirmed that Long had a history of mental health issues and stated that the sheriff’s office was familiar with him, having responded to the residence numerous times for arguments and disturbances. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the shooting, and its findings will be reviewed by the state attorney’s office. The identities of the deputies involved have not been disclosed.
