On 06/28/2024, a police chase involving the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Rancho Cucamonga Police, and Ontario Police ended in a fatal crash that claimed the life of 17-year-old Michael Adrian Gomez. Deputies initiated the pursuit around 1:50 AM in Upland, attempting to stop a black 2018 Hyundai on suspicion of DUI. The driver fled, leading officers on a high-speed chase that lasted approximately six minutes. The chase ended violently when the Hyundai collided with a white Mustang and then a pole at 16th Street and Mountain Avenue. The impact caused the Hyundai to split into pieces and catch fire. Four people, including Gomez, were killed at the scene, while a 13-year-old survived but was hospitalized. The Hyundai was reported stolen, and a loaded firearm was recovered from one of the deceased.
