On 06/18/2021, Hawaii police responded to a reported break in at a residence on Kilauea Road in Hilo. Officers entered the home and located Daniel Buckingham inside a bedroom. On 06/17/2021, starting at about 7: 59 p.m., the Chippewa County Central Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a truck driving recklessly in the Pickford area, heading north towards Sault Ste. Marie. Deputies from the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office located the truck traveling northbound on M-129 and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The truck did not stop and continued at high speed with police chasing until it collided with the rear of a small car driven by bystander Katelyn Jo "Katie" Robinson at the intersection of M-129 and 20th Street. The collision propelled Robinson's car into an electric pole, causing her to be ejected. She died at the crash site. The truck then continued northbound, eventually crashing after hitting a stop sign, an electric pole guide wire, three parked cars, and a building. The driver of the truck was transported to War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, also with life-threatening injuries.
