On 02/27/2021 at approximately 8:45 p.m., a Wadena County deputy conducted a traffic stop near 205th Avenue and 270th Street in North Germany Township. During the stop, the deputy encountered Shannon Michael Savela, and a physical struggle occurred.
While that encounter was unfolding, another vehicle arrived at the location. David Jay Savela, 42, exited that vehicle. According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, gunfire was exchanged during the confrontation. Deputy Troy Mayer and Sebeka Police Officer Jason Worm discharged their service weapons.
David Jay Savela and his brother, Shannon Michael Savela, sustained gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead. Deputy Mayer and Officer Worm were also shot during the incident and transported for medical treatment. Both officers survived.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigated the shooting. The Wadena County Attorney later determined that the officers’ use of deadly force was justified under Minnesota law. Body camera and squad video footage were later released publicly.
