On 02/26/2021 at approximately 1:00 a.m., Liberty Police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a woman walking in the roadway on U.S. 27 South in Liberty. Officer Lorenzo Shepler arrived and found 29-year-old Maggie Ann Dickerson in the road. Shepler attempted to move her out of traffic, and a physical struggle followed.
During the struggle, police allege that Dickerson produced a knife. Shepler fired multiple rounds, striking her at least once. Emergency responders transported Dickerson by medical helicopter to a hospital in Ohio, where she later died.
Indiana State Police investigators took over the investigation into the shooting under standard protocol for a police killing. Authorities did not publicly release additional details about what led to the 911 call beyond reports that she was in the roadway.
