In February 2021, 43-year-old Lakisel Thomas was struck and killed while crossing the street to pick up lunch for her son when a fleeing vehicle ran a red light and hit her. Chicago Police had attempted a traffic stop for an improperly displayed registration. The driver, Isaac Wade, 20, was chased by police at 80 mph and ran multiple lights before striking another vehicle and hitting Thomas in the 7400 block of South Racine Avenue. She died shortly after at St. Bernard Hospital. The pursuit violated department policy, and in January 2025, the city proposed a $4.5 million settlement to her estate.
