On 09/01/2021, El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check after a family member reported Connor Riley McDaniel was suicidal and had sent goodbye messages. Deputies located McDaniel in the 17000 block of Gollihar Court near Peyton and spent hours trying to communicate with him while additional crisis response resources joined. Police said McDaniel had a handgun, fired multiple rounds during the incident, and fired toward deputies. Deputies Ryan Gonzales, Andrew Peery, and David Fisher opened fire and shot McDaniel. The 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office later ruled the deputies’ use of deadly force justified. The DA media release stated multiple deputies had body worn cameras recording during the encounter and said the recordings were used in the review.
