Event : #2 Passenger killed by police chase crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
REASON FOR CHASE: Passenger killed during speeding pursuit.
.
NARRATIVE:
On 03/09/2022, an unidentified passenger was killed when a vehicle driven by 19-year-old Dane Angelo Fearron of New York crashed and caught fire on Interstate 24 East near mile marker 120 after Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers initiated a traffic stop in Coffee County, Tennessee. A second passenger was also killed.
.
A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper observed Fearron's vehicle traveling in excess of 90 mph as it passed the truck weigh station on Interstate 24 between exits 114 and 117. Troopers pulled onto the interstate and activated their emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop.
.
District Attorney General Craig Northcott said the vehicle crashed near eastbound mile marker 120 before the troopers were able to overtake it. The vehicle left the roadway, crashed and became engulfed in flames.
.
Fearron escaped from the burning vehicle and ran from the crash scene. Troopers pursued him on foot and apprehended him a short distance away. He was transported to Unity Medical Center in Manchester for treatment of minor injuries.
.
After firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire, authorities discovered two people dead inside. One victim was located in the front passenger seat and the second was found in the rear passenger area. Both bodies were badly burned and were sent to the state medical examiner for autopsy and identification.
.
Northcott said investigators initially could not determine whether the passengers died from the collision, the subsequent fire, or had died before the impact.
.
Fearron was booked into the Coffee County Jail after his release from the hospital. He was initially charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and evading arrest.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Tennessee Highway Patrol did not publicly identify the trooper who initiated the traffic stop or the other trooper(s) involved.

Hugo Natanael Martinez
Age :22
Gender :Male
Race : Latino/a/e
Date : 03/06/2022
Location : Interstate 85 North near Jimmy Carter Boulevard
City : Norcross
County : Gwinnett
State : Georgia
Agency : Georgia State Patrol
Officer(s) : Trooper Demarcus Thomas
Cause of Death : Vehicle
Event : Bystander killed by police chase crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
REASON FOR CHASE: Bystander killed during speeding and improper-lane-change pursuit.
.
NARRATIVE:
On 03/06/2022, 22-year-old Hugo Natanael Martinez was killed while standing beside his disabled pickup truck on Interstate 85 North in Gwinnett County when a Porsche being pursued by Georgia State Patrol Trooper Demarcus Thomas left the roadway and struck him.
.
At approximately 8:00 p.m., Trooper Thomas was conducting traffic enforcement on Interstate 85 when he observed a silver Porsche making improper lane changes and traveling well over 80 mph in a posted 70-mph zone. Thomas attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Smith accelerated away and Thomas pursued him northbound on I-85.
.
During the pursuit, Smith drove through traffic at extremely high speed. Thomas later testified that he glanced at his patrol vehicle's speedometer during the pursuit and saw 117 mph. Thomas estimated that Smith's Porsche was traveling over 120 mph. Dash-camera video recorded the high-speed pursuit and was later shown to the jury during Smith's criminal trial.
.
Martinez had experienced vehicle trouble and was stopped on the right shoulder of I-85. A tow-truck driver had positioned his truck in front of Martinez's pickup, attached it to the flatbed and was loading it. Martinez was standing beside the towing operation and was entirely uninvolved in the pursuit.
.
As the pursuit approached the area south of Jimmy Carter Boulevard, Smith lost control of the Porsche and veered onto the right shoulder toward Martinez and the tow-truck driver. The tow-truck driver saw the Porsche approaching and jumped over a concrete retaining barrier.
.
The Porsche struck Martinez and threw him over the retaining wall onto the roadway below. Martinez suffered fatal blunt-force injuries, including a fracture at the base of his skull that tore his brain stem. He died from his injuries.
..
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
Georgia State Patrol Trooper Demarcus Thomas initiated and participated in the pursuit. His dash-camera recorded the pursuit, and Thomas later testified at Smith's criminal trial about the attempted traffic stop, pursuit and speeds involved. The sources reviewed do not identify criminal charges against Thomas arising from the pursuit.

On 02/28/2022 at approximately 4:10 p.m., Texas Department of Public Safety troopers attempted a traffic stop on a 2007 Lexus RX 350 driven by 40-year-old Isabel Hernandez on Interstate 40 near Wildorado. Hernandez refused to stop and a pursuit ensued, with the vehicle continuing eastbound for about 14 miles. The chase continued onto Bushland Road where Hernandez exited I-40 and failed to obey a stop sign at the intersection of Bushland Road and the I-40 service road. The Lexus crashed into two other vehicles — a Chevrolet Tahoe and a Chevrolet Suburban — at that intersection. Hernandez’s vehicle rolled multiple times; she and a passenger, 31-year-old Adriana Velasquez, were pronounced dead at the scene. Multiple other occupants and drivers of involved vehicles were transported to hospitals with injuries. Texas DPS officials investigated the crash as pursuit-related. The event did not involve firearm use; the deaths resulted from the high-speed chase and subsequent multi-vehicle collision.
