City : Sheffield
County : Colbert
State : Alabama
Agency : Sheffield Police Department, Colbert County Sheriff’s Office, Drug Task Force
Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Asphyxiation
Event : Died by hanging under disputed circumstances
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
As of November 2024, the FBI continues to investigate the death of Dennoriss Richardson, who was found hanging in the carport of an abandoned home in Colbert County, Alabama, on September 28, 2024. Authorities initially ruled his death a suicide, but his family, including his wife Leigh Richardson, has vehemently rejected this conclusion. They argue that Richardson's death is linked to the harassment and abuse he endured from local law enforcement, particularly after he filed a federal lawsuit earlier in the year accusing Sheffield police of brutality.
The FBI's involvement in the investigation was prompted by requests from local law enforcement. The investigation has been clouded by the community's deep mistrust of law enforcement, due to a history of police misconduct and allegations of excessive force in the area. Richardson had been in the midst of legal battles against Sheffield police, and his wife claims that his fear of police escalated after filing the lawsuit. The details surrounding his death remain unclear, and the FBI is reviewing the case to ensure transparency and accountability.

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On August 4, 2024, Irondale police responded to reports of a man running into traffic on Highway 78. Officers tasered and restrained Phillip Reeder. According to attorneys for the family, body-camera footage shows an officer kneeling on Reeder’s neck for over three minutes while he said “I can’t breathe” at least three times. Reeder died at the scene. An autopsy ruled the death a homicide, citing hypertensive heart disease, cocaine use, and physical stress during the incident. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency investigated and the Jefferson County District Attorney declined to press charges. The officers involved have not been named.
Reeder’s family has demanded the release of full body-camera footage and the names of the officers involved. They allege excessive force and say Reeder was suffering a mental health crisis when killed. Attorneys for the family said the video contradicts the police narrative and shows a prolonged neck restraint. They are pursuing legal action and are calling for public accountability and transparency.

Sumner Howard
Age :67
Gender :Male
Race : Native Pacific Islander
Date : 07/09/2024
Location : Old Shell Road and Mobile Infirmary
City : Mobile
County : Mobile
State : Alabama
Agency : Mobile Police Department
Officer(s) : Roy Adams Jr.
Cause of Death : Vehicle
Event : Motorcycle driver killed by police vehicle crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Mobile PD Officer Roy Adams drove across an intersection and ran a red light with allegedly blue lights on but no siren at 11 p.m. and pulled into the path of a motorcycle. The police vehicle caused Sumner Howard to crash his motorcycle, killing him. Fox10 pulled the crash report and found that a brick building to the right blocks the view of any approaching cars from the south, which means Howard likely never saw the police car. It had no sirens and Howard very likely was completely unaware of the police car that ran the red light and suddenly blocked his lane.
.
The intersection has a known blind spot. Police allege that he was speeding through red lights because he was on an “emergency call” but did not disclose what emergency they were chasing. The lack of sirens late at night was also not explained by MPD.
.
Mobile PD finally disclosed that the officer was Roy Adams Jr. This was the fourth crash he has caused in 2024 alone. Two of the crashes occurred on the same day separately. Another crash happened when he fell asleep while driving his patrol car. Another crash happened when he was seen running a stop sign. The final crash occurred on 7/9/2024 during which he killed Sumner Howard. Local media report that after all these crashes, he is still on patrol but he is no longer driving.
.
This is the second motorcyclist killed in Mobile in 2024 by negligent MPD officers. The first case, motorcyclist Robert Sayen who was killed by MPD while riding a motorcycle, is currently before a grand jury. The officer in the Sayen crash was Callegari.
