Jacob Dewberry, 20, died in a high-speed pursuit initiated by Dale County deputies for undisclosed reasons on the evening of August 11, 2024. The chase, reaching speeds of over 100 mph, lasted several miles before Dewberry's vehicle crashed into a tree. He was taken to a hospital but died from the injuries. Brandon Gaines, 30, allegedly ambushed an off-duty Homewood Police Department officer outside the officer's home as the officer was leaving for work. The officer was shot but survived in stable condition. Gaines fled the scene and was located in Moody, where police escalated a standoff. On 07/19/2024, Alabama State Police initiated a pursuit of a motorcycle driven by Johenam Moises Fernandez Alvarez on Houston County Road 55 near Alabama 52 in Dothan. Police began the chase after Alvarez allegedly refused to stop during an attempted traffic stop for a suspected traffic violation. The pursuit was escalated to high speeds, reportedly exceeding 100 mph. Alvarez lost control of the motorcycle, crashing into a ditch. He died from injuries sustained in the pursuit crash. The Alabama State Police are investigating the incident.

on July 13, 2024, Cody Wayne Ashley was driving a 2020 Nissan Maxima and was being pursued by police when the vehicle left the road, struck a utility pole and a tree, and overturned. The crash happened at approximately 2:49 a.m. on DeKalb County Road 248, about two miles south of Fort Payne. Ashley died at the scene. A 16-year-old passenger was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. The pursuit was initiated by the Fort Payne Police Department. The case is under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division​.

Tuscaloosa PD were called for a man trespassing at Whataburger who was unwanted. Joseph Earl Driver, 35, was shot and killed by Tuscaloosa police who allege that Driver pulled out a knife and cut one officer. Details on how officers approached Driver or the sequence of events remain unclear.

Baldwin deputies were sent to the residence of 74-year-old Glenn Dawson who was suicidal due to a cancer diagnosis. When police arrived, he reportedly raised a gun. Police shot and killed him.

Mobile PD Officer Roy Adams drove across an intersection and ran a red light with allegedly blue lights on but no siren at 11 p.m. and pulled into the path of a motorcycle. The police vehicle caused Sumner Howard to crash his motorcycle, killing him. Fox10 pulled the crash report and found that a brick building to the right blocks the view of any approaching cars from the south, which means Howard likely never saw the police car. It had no sirens and Howard very likely was completely unaware of the police car that ran the red light and suddenly blocked his lane.

The intersection has a known blind spot. Police allege that he was speeding through red lights because he was on an “emergency call” but did not disclose what emergency they were chasing. The lack of sirens late at night was also not explained by MPD.

Mobile PD finally disclosed that the officer was Roy Adams Jr. This was the fourth crash he has caused in 2024 alone. Two of the crashes occurred on the same day separately. Another crash happened when he fell asleep while driving his patrol car. Another crash happened when he was seen running a stop sign. The final crash occurred on 7/9/2024 during which he killed Sumner Howard. Local media report that after all these crashes, he is still on patrol but he is no longer driving.

This is the second motorcyclist killed in Mobile in 2024 by negligent MPD officers. The first case, motorcyclist Robert Sayen who was killed by MPD while riding a motorcycle, is currently before a grand jury. The officer in the Sayen crash was Callegari.

On June 24, 2024, Riverside Police officers actively pursued a 2019 BMW X5 reported taken without permission by a family member. Officers observed the vehicle in Riverside and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver, 19-year-old Jennefer L. Arellano-Maldonado of Odenville, Alabama, refused to stop.

Officers escalated the chase, following the BMW at high speeds through residential areas. Arellano-Maldonado lost control on Depot Street near Lakeview Circle. The BMW crashed into the remains of Riverside Baptist Church, a site where her boyfriend, 19-year-old Anthony Banks Jr., had died in a crash days earlier. The vehicle struck a brick wall and burst into flames.

Arellano-Maldonado was pronounced dead at the scene. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is conducting an independent investigation into the chase and crash. Police have not disclosed the identities of the pursuing officers or any administrative actions resulting from the incident.

Daniel Allen Johnson, a 43-year-old resident of Birmingham's Forest Park community, was shot and killed by police responding to a disorderly conduct report on June 24, 2024. Upon arrival, police encountered Johnson, who allegedly presented a knife. During the altercation, an officer discharged their weapon, fatally wounding Johnson. He was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:18 p.m.

His friend told a TV station, “He was leaning up against the tree and he was saying, ‘Get the light off of me. Please get the light off of me,’’' and “They were bickering back and forth and they were just saying the same things over and over. It was just heated and intense and I was like what the hell is happening over there.

The officer was seen firing at least 2 shots into him. He died at the hospital. His life partner of 24 years describes him as a very kind spiritual man. He is believed to have been unarmed.

Travis Dickson, 42, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff with Dothan Police on November 24, 2024. Police accused him of firing shots at a vehicle earlier and escalated a chase up to 115 mph through Dothan and rural Houston County that came to an end when his vehicle became disabled on railroad tracks. He stopped and police forced a standoff described only as "lengthy." Dickson did eventually come out of his car and according to police, he then died by suicide by shooting himself in the chest. No BWC or autopsy, no officers names provided. ALEA is handling the investigation.

On June 15, 2024, Gabriel McNutt, 15, was experiencing a mental health crisis in his home on Elles Drive in Athens, Alabama. Athens Police were called to the home at 2:15 PM. McNutt allegedly had knives and retrieved a firearm. Police alleged that the situation escalated when McNutt "threw knives" and fired a shot at officers. Police shot and killed him. His parents disclosed McNutt suffered from severe neurological and mental health issues, including epilepsy and depression. The case is under investigation by the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

On November 21, 2024, Andrew Joshua Harrison, 33, died in Fairhope, Alabama, due to a police chase crash initiated by Baldwin County Sheriff's deputies. On June 11, 2024, Damion Laddal Jones, 31, of Easley, South Carolina, was killed by Opelika PD near Interstate 85 in Opelika, Alabama. Officers with the Opelika Police Department responded to a multi-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car around 2:35 PM. During their response, Jones allegedly confronted officers while armed with a knife. Police further allege that he advanced on them despite verbal commands. Police have not explained what transpired from their arrival to a crash site to cause this escalation and how they approached Jones. Police opened fire and killed Jones. His body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for postmortem examination. No autopsy report nor quotes from it have been made available.

On May 24, 2024, Hartselle Police Department (HPD) escalated a pursuit against a speeding driver traveling on U.S. Highway 31 near Hartselle, Alabama. The pursuit began after the driver ran a red light and continued at excessive speed. Other law enforcement agencies joined the chase, including Cullman Police Department (CPD), Cullman County Sheriff's Office (CCSO), and Alabama State Troopers who all pursued the vehicle at over 100 mph. .

The chase escalated further when the driver, losing both front tires at one point, continued fleeing at speeds and this continued across several miles and for a significant time despite the vehicle’s worsening condition. The chase ultimately ended when the fleeing vehicle collided with bystander Ellarea Dickson's car near the Town Square Shopping Center in Cullman. Dickson, 77, was killed in the crash, and another individual was critically injured. The driver of the fleeing vehicle was taken into custody after sustaining injuries and remains hospitalized.

On May 20, 2024, Baldwin County deputies responded to a false emergency call about an alleged emergency with a description of a vehicle to look for. The responding officer, Sgt. Reid White, was traveling on Kings Road when he spotted Louis Mazzola, 67, who was returning home from work. Sgt. White initiated a traffic stop, activating his lights and siren. Mazzola turned left onto Back in the Woods Way and White attempted to pass Mazzola’s vehicle on the left at high speed. White crashed into Mazzola’s vehicle, causing Mazzola to be ejected. Gravely injured, Mazzola later died from his injuries.

The incident was a result of the false 911 call and involved significant police activity by a number of participating officers, which escalated to the crash. White was placed on administrative leave while the Georgia State Patrol investigates the incident.

On May 15, 2024, Athens Police responded to a report that Maurice White allegedly threatened others with a gun and fired it. White had left the initial location when officers escalated a chase to Songbird Drive, where he reportedly fired his weapon again. Officers fired a taser at him. Police claim he pointed a gun at them. Police then shot and killed White around 7:20 PM. The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.

On May 10, 2024, Antonio Seales, a chaplain for the Montgomery Police Department, was struck by a vehicle involved in a high-speed chase initiated by Greenville Police following a reported theft. The fleeing driver, Ashton Ford, drove onto I-65, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) troopers reportedly called off the chase near Hope Hull.

The chase had been discontinued only moments prior and the crash occurred just two blocks from where the chase was reportedly discontinued, near the intersection of Norman Bridge Road and East Delano Avenue in Montgomery. Seales was gravely injured in the crash and passed away on May 21, 2024, after 11 days of fighting for his life.

Antonio Seales, widely known as "Tonio," was a beloved and active figure in the Montgomery community and as the chaplain for the Montgomery Police Department. He was also a respected community leader and champion for unity, often recognized for his deep faith and dedication to service.

On 05/07/2024, a fatal vehicle collision occurred on Florence Boulevard in Florence, Alabama, involving 57-year-old Dawn Buchanan and Lauderdale County Sheriff's Deputy David Terry. On May 3, 2024, Jackson County Sheriff's deputies responded to a service call on County Road 143 in Skyline, Alabama. Deputies initiated a traffic stop involving Charles David Boyles. The driver, later identified as Gilmar Tista-Morente, reportedly fired shots at the officers and fled. This prompted a multi-county police pursuit involving Northport PD, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), and Greene County officials. The vehicle crashed on Interstate 59/20 near Exit 52, where police approached the vehicle. Officers alleged that Tista-Morente was armed with a gun, but no record has been found to confirm that he fired or used the weapon in any way. The confrontation occurred in the backyard of a residence on the 200 block of Walnut Street. Barcelou, armed with two knives, charged at officers, who first deployed a taser. The taser was unsuccessful, and police then shot and killed him. Body cam footage of the event exists but has been withheld during the investigation. On March 29, 2024, Robert Sayen was killed in a collision with a Mobile Police Department (MPD) patrol car, driven by Officer Paul Callegari Jr. Eyewitnesses called 911, stating that the officer had hit and killed the motorcyclist and had fled the scene. Four separate eyewitnesses corroborated the 911 call, reporting the officer fleeing after the fatal crash. Surveillance video of the incident is available.

Tuscaloosa PD responded to a mental health welfare check on Evet Tower, who was allegedly acting erratically and was reported to have attacked her daughter with a kitchen knife. Tuscaloosa County deputies were conversing with her when she allegedly retrieved a knife and charged at her daughter. One of the officers shot and killed her. On March 6, 2024, Dothan Police responded to a report of a shooting at a home on Bunche Street, where 62-year-old Reinetta Ann Lewis was found dead in the front yard from multiple gunshot wounds. Her ex-husband, Ansel Lewis, was believed to have committed the shooting. Police quickly set up a perimeter around the house, placing nearby Dothan High School on lockdown. Crisis negotiators attempted to make contact with Ansel Lewis, but after no communication, the Special Response Team (SRT) entered the residence. A robot, used to inspect the area, revealed that Ansel Lewis was found dead inside, having died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On February 23, 2024, at approximately 11:10 a.m., officers with the Rome Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Hi-Tech convenience store located at 401 South Broad Street. Surveillance footage showed that Kelvin Gerard Jackson, 34, entered the store, threatened the clerk with a gun, and demanded money. Shortly after officers arrived at the scene, Jackson fled on foot. Police chased him on foot up McGhee Street. During the pursuit, an officer confronted Jackson and shot and killed him. It is not known what this confrontation included. Police alleged that they found a gun, but no allegations have been made that Jackson attempted to use it. He died at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken over the investigation​.

Lipscomb Police attempted a traffic stop on a speeding Dodge Challenger on February 16, 2024. The driver fled, and police escalated a chase. Police soon "called off the chase," but the vehicle crashed into a tree and overturned at the intersection of 6th Avenue North and 5th Street North.
