Etowah deputies Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, said that their investigator tried to stop a four-wheeler driven by a male on Holliday Circle in the Egypt Community. The man finally abandoned the ATV on Walker Mountain Road and ran on foot. Deputies caught up with him and a fight ensued. Police shot and killed him. He had been unarmed.

On 08/28/2022, Selma Police Department officers responded to Baymont Inn in Selma regarding a shooting victim. Police identified Isaiah Guy Deweever, 33, as the suspected shooter after Kerry Dudley, 29, was shot multiple times. Deweever fled in a green Honda. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle in the parking lot of Valley Grande Baptist Church. Deputies, Selma police officers, and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officers observed Deweever inside the vehicle holding a pistol. Deputies backed away as he moved the firearm. Officers then heard a gunshot. When deputies returned to the vehicle, Deweever had shot himself in the chest. He died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Bay Minette PD traffic-stopped Otis French for an allegedly broken turn signal. Police claim that he refused to exit his car, pushed the officer and fled. Police allege that he took the officer's Taser and fired it at him. The officer then shot and killed French who had been unarmed. Police announced they won’t release the bodycam footage.

Lawrence County deputies tried to traffic-stop Marty Hutto but he kept driving. Police claim that as they pursued, he “began throwing objects” ad the police car behind him and further claim that he got out of his vehicle and pointed a flare gun at police. Police shot and killed him. The killing was justified by the Grand Jury. It is not clear how police managed to get a shooting of a man who held an obvious nonlethal flare gun justified but all officers were cleared.

Montgomery police officers who were searching for a wanted person spotted two males standing at the passenger’s side of an SUV at the Express Inn East hotel conducting a small drug deal. Two males got into a Nissan Altima with a paper tag. Officers activated their lights and sirens and the Altima sped up. Police escalated a chase to 90 to 100 mph at what point police claim that they “called off the chase” just as the vehicle was about to crash. The car had crashed in the 5800 block of Vaughn Road near Young Meadows Road. Simmons was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead. Records state that they found a rifle next to Brown’s leg and marijuana in Simmons’ pocket.

Decatur Police chased a vehicle that had allegedly been involved in shoplifting at Home Depot at high speed until the vehicle crashed, killing the driver, Lafonz Hewlett. Two other men were arrested.

Both the Ozark Police Department and the Dale County Police Department took up chase of a man who had allegedly been seen chasing a person in another car. Shots had been fired. A neighbor who did not recognize Bradley Ellison as homeowner had called police, reporting a “suspicious person.”

Police chief Rick Williams and officer John Wall arrived at the address and allege that Ellison shot at them and officers returned fire, killing him.

Of note, the events took place in his backyard of a home he had owned for 17 years. He was reportedly sitting under a tree with a gun. Neighbors report that different caliber guns were heard going off including rifles, that police with rifles were running across the yard and Ellison was killed in his backyard. There is no indication whether police investigated or approached him before opening fire.

Police chief Rick Williams was briefly checked in overnight at the local hospital for unspecified injuries and promptly released. He did not elaborate further what had gone wrong and why he personally had taken the “suspicious person” call and been one of the shooters. On 12/01/2021, Wilcox County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Shamburger Road in Yellow Bluff. Billy Gilbert Bizzell, 52, went to the home of a woman connected to him and had a gun. When deputies arrived, gunfire was exchanged. Deputies opened fire and shot Bizzell. He died from gunshot wounds. Retired Wilcox County Deputy Glenn Hutto, 65, who was at the residence during the incident, was also shot and later died from his injuries. A responding deputy was injured during the exchange. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency conducted the investigation.

On 11/24/2021, following the shooting of two security guards at an active strip mine near the 4000 block of Blue Creek Road, a stolen vehicle linked to the incident was located by deputies in Cullman County and police escalated a pursuit when the driver continued driving on Highway 278 West. The vehicle became stuck and the driver fled, stole another vehicle, and continued driving into Winston County where spike strips disabled the vehicle. Officers approached and found Steven Chad Wright dead inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Reporting indicates the pursuit involved multiple agencies and followed the earlier discovery of one guard killed and another wounded at the mine site.

On 10/13/2021, Birmingham Police officers responded to a report of a woman shot during a domestic dispute on Brussels Circle and identified George Anthony Dowdell as the person involved. Police pursued him as he entered an apartment and established a perimeter after he barricaded himself and fired gunshots toward officers. On 08/06/2021, special agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and members of the Alabama Drug Enforcement Task Force were involved in an officer-involved shooting near the Good Hope community in Cullman County, Alabama. Nathan Larry Parsons, 49, of Gardendale, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to official statements, the shooting occurred around 1:30 p.m. and involved officers and special agents working as part of a multi-agency effort to enforce narcotics laws. No officers or agents were reported to have been injured during the incident. On 07/28/2021, Jonathan Andrew Pears was shot and killed by a deputy with the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office in Wetumpka, Alabama. Deputies responded to a domestic dispute at a home after Pears’ mother called 911 because she was concerned about his behavior.
