On February 18, 2025, at approximately 6:10 p.m., 29-year-old Surafel Zerihun was fatally shot by officers from the Metropolitan Police Department in the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. The incident began when Zerihun allegedly crashed his vehicle into a police cruiser, then exited and, armed with a knife, attempted to seize the officer's service weapon. After being shot once, Zerihun reportedly entered another police vehicle, then attempted to carjack a woman's car at knifepoint. Officers opened fire on the man, resulting in his death. The Metropolitan Police Department's Internal Affairs Division is conducting the investigation, with an independent review by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

On 01/15/2025, officers attempted to stop a black Kia Sportage for a traffic violation near the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge. The driver, 18-year-old Jalen Anthony Young, and the passenger, believed to be 17-year-old Nyair Raymond, fled on foot. Young was apprehended, but Raymond escaped and has been missing since. Three days later, Raymond's phone was found near the bridge, and his jacket was discovered submerged in the Anacostia River about a week and a half later. On 03/07/2025, a body matching Raymond's description was recovered from the river, but official identification is pending. His mother, Sharnell Ford, suspects foul play and is demanding access to body camera footage from the night of the chase. The investigation is ongoing.

On 01/13/2025, Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a report of an armed person in the lobby of an apartment complex at the 300 block of Florida Avenue Northeast. Upon arrival, officers observed a man holding a gun. The individual entered an elevator, temporarily evading the officers. When the elevator returned to the lobby, the man exited and fired his weapon, striking three officers. The officers opened fire, fatally striking the individual. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The incident is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department.

On October 8, 2024, Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers initiated a pursuit after observing a vehicle driving without headlights in the 1600 block of K Street NW. The driver failed to stop, and the police escalated the chase. During the pursuit, the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and ran a red light at the intersection of 15th and L Streets NW, striking 25-year-old Alpha Oumar Kake, a food delivery driver, who was riding a scooter and had the right of way. Kake was critically injured and later died from his injuries after being transported to the hospital. The driver fled the scene and remains unidentified.

Alpha Oumar Kake, originally from Guinea, was working to support his family back home. His death has caused devastation among his loved ones, and the investigation is ongoing. The Metropolitan Police Department is leading the investigation.

On September 1, 2024, at approximately 5:30 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers responded to a vehicle collision at a McDonald's drive-thru in Southeast Washington, D.C. Officers found 26-year-old Justin Robinson unconscious in his vehicle, which had crashed into the restaurant. A firearm was observed on his lap.

As Robinson regained consciousness, officers gave commands for him not to touch the weapon. According to police reports, Robinson moved toward the firearm, prompting two officers to discharge their weapons, fatally wounding him.

Justin Robinson was employed as a Violence Interrupter with the D.C. Office of the Attorney General's "Cure the Streets" program, which works to reduce gun violence. His death sparked protests and calls for accountability.

On January 24, 2024, at approximately 6:45 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a call regarding a man, 41-year-old Clifford Brooks, experiencing a mental health crisis. Brooks was initially cooperative and agreed to be transported for medical evaluation. However, during transport, Brooks became agitated and assaulted a firefighter-paramedic, fleeing the scene after pinning her against a wall.

Officers attempted to detain Brooks, but he became combative, assaulting an officer and fleeing into traffic. After crawling under a truck, he emerged holding a metal object. Despite multiple commands to drop the object, Brooks advanced toward Officer Claude Jackson, who then discharged his firearm, striking and killing him.

The shooting is under investigation by the Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team. The U.S. Attorney’s Office determined there was insufficient evidence to pursue charges against Officer Jackson, concluding that the officer acted within the scope of his duties.

Turell Delonte Campbell, 30, died on November 22, 2023, after a confrontation with U.S. Park Police officers in Washington, D.C. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when Campbell, suspected of being involved in drug-related offenses, was pursued by an officer. The officer, wearing civilian clothes with Park Police markings, ordered Campbell to get on the ground, but Campbell refused and attempted to flee. A physical altercation followed, during which both the officer and Campbell were shot multiple times. Campbell later succumbed to his injuries, while the officer was hospitalized in stable condition​.

Following the fatal police shooting of 30-year-old Turrell Delonte Campbell on November 22, 2023, the U.S. Park Police officers involved were cleared of wrongdoing. Federal prosecutors found insufficient evidence to charge the officer who shot Campbell, citing a thorough review of evidence including body-worn camera footage, crime scene analysis, and testimony from both law enforcement and civilians. The officer involved had been shot by Campbell, and after a brief struggle, returned fire, fatally wounding Campbell.
