On February 13, 2021, Aaron Negash, 28, was stopped in a Hyundai SUV on the shoulder of westbound I-70 facing the wrong direction when an Indiana State Police trooper arrived. As the trooper parked in front of the SUV and exited his squad car, Negash drove forward, veering around the police vehicle. He continued driving about a half-mile in the wrong direction before crashing into a Hyundai Sonata carrying two occupants. The collision resulted in the deaths of Negash, the Sonata's driver, Jepthah Lian, 34, and an unidentified passenger.

It was also reported that a domestic battery had occurred. Officers contacted the man by phone but soon heard what they believed to be a gunshot from inside the residence. A person, later identified as Keith Scales, 60, had reportedly threatened suicide and was firing shots from inside a residence shortly before noon. Upon arrival, officers observed gunfire coming from the home's windows and doors and began evacuating nearby residents. During the incident, Scales shot at several vehicles, including a police vehicle. When Scales allegedly raised a high-powered rifle toward the officers, they shot and killed him.
