On May 3, 2023, at approximately 8:34 p.m., Newark Police Department officers responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting individuals shot inside a residence on Johnson Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. Upon arrival, officers found a deceased male and an 8-year-old boy with gunshot wounds; the child was transported to University Hospital and pronounced dead at 9:14 p.m. During the response, officers encountered 29-year-old Everett Rand fleeing the scene with a firearm. Thadius Wilder, a 35-year-old father of five from Passaic, was found drowned after last being seen running from police. His sister said that he was sitting on a bench at the Passaic public housing project on Aspen Place when two uniformed officers approached him with an arrest warrant for dealing drugs.
Wilder ran, apparently afraid of going back to prison. Police never searched the river nearby. Wilder’s sister found eyewitnesses who said he had “ended up in the water.” She told police who denied this possibility. Community members searched for him and saw his body floating in the river. The family had to notify police who had refused to search the river. His body was retrieved later but the family had been left to search for him without help from police.

On November 5, 2021, members of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office attempted to execute a residential search warrant on Chelsea Avenue in Long Branch. During the operation, Mark D. Walker II shot and wounded one of the detectives. The detectives retreated, and Walker barricaded himself inside the residence with his two-week-old infant. Negotiations continued for approximately seven hours without success. Around 2 a.m. on November 6, a fire erupted in the apartment building. Walker fled the building holding the infant and fired several rounds at officers, striking a BearCat vehicle. In response, three MOCERT officers returned fire, fatally wounding Walker, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The infant was unharmed.
