On 06/07/2025 at approximately 11:38 a.m., Amarillo Police officers responded to a welfare check call regarding a man reportedly asleep inside a vehicle in the Walmart parking lot at 4215 Canyon Drive. On June 2, Memorial Villages officers attempted to pull over a vehicle lacking tail lights. The driver sped away, and despite spotting the vehicle a second time, officers did not activate pursuit due to department policy. The driver then ran several red lights on Westheimer Road, collided with multiple vehicles near Gessner, and continued eastbound. At Fondren and Westheimer, he crashed into another car, struck a pole or building, and his car burst into flames. Officers attempted to extinguish the fire, but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Multiple occupants in other vehicles were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Police claim that they called off the chase just before the crash.

As officers approached, a Latino male exited the home and opened fire. Officers returned fire. A female officer was shot and hospitalized in stable condition. The man was shot and taken to a hospital where he died. The shooting is under investigation by the Texas Rangers, El Paso Police Crimes Against Persons Unit, and Internal Affairs.
