On 09/27/2022, members of the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force identified a wanted person in Roanoke County vehicle traffic and initiated a traffic stop near Crossbow Court off Route 220. As task force members approached the vehicle, they heard a single gunshot. Task force members found Joshua R. Donahue with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported by EMS to a hospital and later died from his wounds. No law enforcement members discharged their weapons during the encounter.

On 09/14/2022, Charlottesville Police Department officers located Robert Damon Hughes Jr., 43, in the parking lot of the Albemarle Square Shopping Center on the 400 block of Preston Avenue. Officers were attempting to serve outstanding warrants and approached his vehicle. As officers moved in to make contact, Hughes produced a handgun and shot himself. Officers requested emergency medical assistance immediately. Hughes was transported to a hospital, where he later died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound. Roanoke Police received a report of a potentially suicidal man with a firearm in the 4600 block of Long Acre Drive NE having left the area by car. Police knew that the man had an active felony warrant in another jurisdiction and the description of the vehicle was aired via APB to all Patrol Units.
An officer found the car in the area of Orange Avenue and Williamson Road NE and he began to follow the vehicle and also saw that there was a passenger in the car. The officer attempted a traffic stop but the pursuit continued out of the City of Roanoke
Patrol units deployed pursuit stop sticks but the driver continued fleeing. The driver finally lost control of the vehicle and crashed in the 3100 block of Read Mountain Road in Botetourt County. The driver committed suicide under police duress.
