Upon arrival, the officer witnessed Scott Tiati, 52, shooting and killing a woman in front of them. Tiati had also killed the woman's dog. The officer fired at Tiati, but it was not immediately disclosed whether Tiati's death resulted from the officer's gunfire or from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Brandon Galloza later observed the vehicle traveling at high speed and saw it crash into a support column under I-676 near Pine Street. Muse exited the vehicle, climbed a fence, and ran onto the interstate where civilian vehicles struck and killed him. The New Jersey Attorney General conducted the required independent investigation and released body-camera footage after meeting with family members. REASON FOR CHASE: A Polk County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to stop Wayne Keith Smith Jr. for a traffic violation in the Green Creek community of Polk County, North Carolina. NARRATIVE:
On 02/02/2021, Wayne Keith Smith Jr., 37, of Campobello, South Carolina, was killed when his vehicle struck a tree during a Polk County Sheriff's Office pursuit that began in North Carolina and continued into Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

Shortly after 9:00 p.m., a Polk County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to stop Smith for a traffic violation in the Green Creek community of Polk County. According to the Sheriff's Office, Smith continued away when the deputy activated emergency lights and a pursuit followed.

The pursuit continued across the North Carolina-South Carolina state line into Spartanburg County. The Polk County Sheriff's Office initially reported that speeds during the pursuit reached approximately 90 mph.

Smith was traveling west on Ray Blackley Road in Spartanburg County when his vehicle left the left side of the roadway near Peachtree Road and struck a tree. Smith died at the scene.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the fatal collision. The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office identified the deceased driver as Wayne Smith Jr. of Campobello.

Smith's family subsequently questioned the official account of the pursuit and crash. Family members said they received conflicting information about whether Smith had been pursued and about the speeds involved. At approximately 10:13 p.m., a state trooper attempted to stop the Ford passenger car for speeding on NC Highway 24. Southers continued away from the trooper and a pursuit followed through Kenansville on Highway 24 before turning north onto NC Highway 11.

The subsequent Highway Patrol crash investigation determined that Southers drove at speeds reaching approximately 110 mph during the pursuit and at times drove with the vehicle's headlights turned off.

At the intersection of NC Highway 11 and NC Highway 903, Southers continued through a stop sign, crossed Highway 903 and left the roadway. The Ford struck a fence post and became airborne before landing upside down in a pond containing approximately 15 feet of water.

Investigators estimated that the Ford was traveling approximately 70 mph when it struck the fence and traveled approximately 132 feet through the air before entering the pond.

Five people were inside the Ford. Darien Wellington Gayle, 20, of Dunn, escaped from the vehicle before it submerged. The pursuing trooper threw a rescue rope into the pond and helped Gayle reach safety. Gayle was transported to Vidant Duplin Hospital with minor injuries and released.

Southers and passengers Geavon Myles, 17, of Magnolia; Tavius Carroll, 21, of Dunn; and Amanda Serrano-Garcia of Lillington remained trapped inside the submerged vehicle. On February 1, 2021, around noon, Albuquerque Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex. Officers pursued a man from the incident in a high-speed chase through the city. The pursuit ended near Virginia Street NE and Lomas Boulevard NE in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The individual reportedly shot and killed himself at the conclusion of the chase.

On February 1, 2021, 34-year-old Andrew Scott Kislek followed his estranged wife to the Tucson Veterans Affairs Medical Center and rammed her vehicle before firing several shots into it. He fled the scene and was later stopped by Tucson Police near West Ajo Way and South 6th Avenue. During the stop in the Circle K parking lot, a confrontation occurred, and Officer Alexis Lujan opened fire, killing Kislek. The case was investigated by the Tucson Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards and the Pima County Attorney’s Office.
