On 02/01/2021, 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore was found dead in her apartment on Washington Street in Canton. Investigators initially ruled her death a suicide, but federal prosecutors later determined she was strangled by former Stoughton Police Department officer Matthew Farwell, who then staged the scene to look like a suicide. Birchmore had been sexually exploited by Farwell since she was a teenager and was pregnant with his child at the time of her death. Farwell has been federally indicted for her murder and obstruction of justice and remains in custody awaiting trial.

On February 1, 2021, around 8:30 p.m., police responded to a call reporting that a man had broken into a home in Hayward and held the caller hostage. The hostage managed to escape and contacted the police. Authorities arrived at the scene and attempted to get the man, Terry L. Carson, to come out. Carson refused to comply, and a long standoff ensued. After a period of silence, police used a robot with a camera to check on Carson and discovered that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On February 1, 2021, around 6:45 p.m., Snyder Police Department officers and Scurry County Sheriff's deputies responded to a disturbance at the Rip Griffin Travel Center truck stop located at 1100 US-180 in Snyder, Texas. Upon arrival, they encountered 57-year-old Kevin Hayes of Arkansas, who was armed with a firearm. Officers instructed Hayes to drop his weapon; however, he reportedly opened fire on the officers. In response, the officers returned fire, fatally wounding Hayes.

On 01/31/2021, Bledsoe County sheriff’s deputies went to a residence on Brockdell Road in Pikeville to serve multiple warrants on Chad William Songer, including a warrant related to a probation violation. According to authorities, during the attempt to take Songer into custody, a police dog was deployed. Police stated that Songer moved toward deputies while holding an object described as a weighted exercise ball and threw it during the encounter. Songer was mauled and fatally injured during the incident. Family members stated that the police dog caused his death. The officers were cleared.

In Kansas City, Missouri, an officer attempted a traffic stop near Gardner Avenue and North Chouteau Trafficway. The driver, Brandy Granados, accelerated away and police initiated a pursuit. During the altercation, Gray reportedly tried to take a deputy's firearm, resulting in the weapon discharging. Deputies deployed a taser in an effort to subdue Gray but were unsuccessful. The confrontation escalated, and at least one deputy opened fire, fatally shooting Gray.

On January 30, 2021, at approximately 12:35 a.m., East Cleveland police officers initiated a vehicle pursuit as part of a drug investigation. The chase concluded near East 110th Street and St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland when the fleeing vehicle collided with a utility pole and caught fire. On 01/29/2021, 76-year-old William Tidwell Sr. of Jasper was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash on Winston County Road 41 near Arley, Alabama.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Tidwell was speeding when his vehicle left Winston County Road 41, struck a utility pole and then struck two trees.

Tidwell survived the initial collision and was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. He died on 02/11/2021 from injuries sustained in the January 29 crash.

The 01/29/2021 Winston County fatal crash entry is consistent with the independently documented collision involving Tidwell. Although his death occurred approximately two weeks after the collision, fatal-crash records classify fatalities according to the date of the qualifying crash rather than the later date of death.

Available reporting attributes the crash to speeding and does not document a police pursuit, attempted traffic stop or other law-enforcement pursuit preceding the collision.

The chase continued through Northeast Richland County, culminating in a head-on collision with a cement mixer at the intersection of Screaming Eagle Road and Percival Road. Both Addotta and Hudson sustained fatal injuries in the crash. There were 2 fatalities.

On January 25, 2021, around 11 p.m., Pierce County Sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic disturbance involving an elderly man and his adult son, John Eric Ostbye, who were reportedly engaged in a heated argument. A firearm was allegedly brandished before deputies arrived. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Ostbye exiting a trailer, allegedly armed with at least one knife or edged weapon. Deputies shot and killed Ostbye when he failed to comply with their commands.

On January 25, 2021, at around 7 p.m., a trooper from the Montana Highway Patrol conducted a traffic stop at MT-35 and Turtle Mountain Road in Creston. Upon approaching the vehicle, the trooper identified that the driver, Mark Johnston Parker, was in possession of a weapon. During the interaction, the trooper used a Taser during the critical incident. Parker shot and killed himself after the taser attack.
