On 01/12/2021, Lakewood police officers responded to reports of trespassing and a robbery near West Colfax Avenue and Garrison Street. Officers encountered Ty Walvatne-Donahey in the area. According to police statements, officers believed he was holding a firearm during the encounter. Officers opened fire, shooting and killing Walvatne-Donahey. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting was placed under investigation, and no charges against officers were announced at the time of reporting.

On 01/11/2021 at approximately 6 a.m., Edinburg police officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a residence on Orlando Street. Police stated that when officers arrived, an assault was underway inside the home. According to police accounts, Jesse Daniel Davila moved toward an officer during the encounter. An officer opened fire, shooting and killing Davila. The incident was placed under investigation. On 01/11/2021, Scottsboro Police searched for Randy Atchley after police reported a shooting at a Zaxby’s on John T Reid Parkway that left a man seriously injured. Police reported Atchley left the scene and officers later located him at a home where a standoff developed. Police reported the home caught fire during the standoff. After the fire, authorities reported they found Atchley dead inside the burned structure and later identified his remains.

On January 11, 2021, at approximately 5:16 p.m., Butler County Sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic violence report in the 6800 block of Yoakum Court at the Lakota Pointe Townhomes in Liberty Township. Junius Thomas, had allegedly kicked in the door of a residence, prompting the female occupant to flee and call 911. Upon arrival, deputies found Thomas armed and "extremely agitated." THE SWAT team was deployed. SWAT officers used an armored vehicle to breach the door. Thomas then appeared in the doorway and raised a gun toward the officers, at which point Deputy Ricky Phillips shot and killed Thomas. A subsequent autopsy revealed the presence of methamphetamine in Thomas's system. Four months later, Officer Phillips shot and injured someone during arrest again. A Butler County grand jury reviewed both incidents and declined to issue an indictment, determining that the use of force was justified.

On 01/10/2021 at approximately 3:37 a.m., Bentonville police officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving a family at a residence near NW Bella Vista Road and NW 6th Street. The incident involved a husband, his wife, their two young children, and the husband’s parents. Police reported that the husband’s father was seriously injured and treated by medical personnel. Officers stated that the wife and children were inside the home with Brian Williams. According to police accounts, when officers attempted to make contact, Williams moved toward them while holding a kitchen knife. Three officers opened fire, shooting and killing him. The driver eventually lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and roll over. Following the crash, the vehicle's two occupants fled on foot. Officers apprehended one individual, while the other, Mark Bivins, 28, continued to flee. During the foot chase, Bivins reportedly shot at officers, who then shot and killed him.

On 01/07/2021, at approximately 6: 20 a.m., members of the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team were executing a high-risk search warrant at a residence located in the 400 block of East Broad Street, Chesaning, Michigan. The warrant was being served on behalf of the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (BAYANET). As the troopers approached the front of the house, John R. Neitling confronted them while armed with a gun. In response, the troopers shot and killed him.This was reportedly the third drug raid at his residence in the past five years. An internal investigation found no violation of departmental policies and the officers returned to work. Neitling was described in his obituary as someone who enjoyed fishing, camping, music, and spending time with family and friends, and he worked at Maximum Roofing among other odd jobs. He is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepdaughter, and extended family.

On the evening of 10/10/2025, the Baytown Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle (BMW) travelling at a high rate of speed on SH-146 near Alexander Drive. Less than a mile later the fleeing vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle near Crystal Boulevard; the male driver of the fleeing vehicle was ejected and died at the scene, while the occupants of the other vehicle were treated for non‐life‐threatening injuries.

On 01/06/2021, Robert Howard was taken from a residence in the 3500 block of Mark Twain Street in Memphis by on duty Memphis police officer Patric Ferguson. According to court records, Ferguson encountered Howard outside the home while armed with his personal handgun and forced him into the back of a police vehicle. Ferguson then drove Howard less than half a mile to the area of Frayser Boulevard and Denver Street. Howard was later found dead from gunshot wounds. On 01/06/2021, Ashli Babbitt was inside the United States Capitol building during the breach of the Capitol. Video footage and law enforcement accounts show Babbitt attempting to climb through a broken window leading into the Speaker’s Lobby area near the House chamber. A U.S. Capitol Police officer fired a single shot, striking Babbitt. She was transported from the building and later pronounced dead. The shooting was reviewed by the U.S. Department of Justice and by internal Capitol Police investigations, both of which concluded the use of force was justified and no criminal charges would be filed. Babbitt’s family later filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit, which resulted in a settlement with the federal government.

The FBI's Safe Streets Task Force was conducting an investigation in Hartford, Connecticut. During the investigation, a suspect was identified and arrested. A secondary individual, Benicio Vasquez, became involved and exchanged gunfire with officers. New Britain Police Officer Christopher Kiely and an FBI agent shot and killed Vasquez.

On January 6, 2021, Tigard Police Department officers responded to a domestic disturbance at the Edgewood Manor Apartments near Southwest Hall Boulevard and Southwest Bonita Road. Upon arrival, they found 26-year-old Jacob Ryan Macduff experiencing a mental health crisis and locked inside his pickup truck. During the standoff, officers reported that Macduff was armed with a knife. Officers fired bean bag rounds to break the truck's windshield. Officer Gabriel Maldonado then fired multiple shots, killing Macduff.

On 01/05/2021, an off duty Austin police officer reported a road incident involving Alexander Gonzales Jr while driving in southeast Austin. According to police accounts, the off duty officer said Gonzales pointed a firearm at him from another vehicle. Uniformed Austin police officers later located Gonzales near 2500 Wickersham Lane. Police said officers gave commands for him to exit his vehicle. Gonzales exited the vehicle and moved toward the rear passenger area, where his young son was seated. An officer then opened fire, shooting and killing Gonzales. Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene. A Travis County grand jury later declined to indict the officers involved. The City of Austin reinstated the officers after an internal review. Gonzales’s family filed a civil lawsuit, and the city later agreed to a settlement.

On January 5, 2021, Spokane Police officers were searching for a person connected to a December 27, 2020, homicide. They located Joseph Buskirk driving in North Spokane. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Buskirk tried to escape in his vehicle. Police disabled the vehicle, and after it came to a stop, Buskirk exited the car and allegedly began firing a weapon at officers. Police shot and killed him during the exchange.
