On October 2, 2025, Honolulu police responded to reports of a man outside Queen’s Medical Center who was expressing suicidal ideation and alleged to be armed. Officers approached him around 10:20 a.m. as he stood on the sidewalk near Punchbowl and South Beretania. According to police, the man reached into his waistband and produced a handgun, pointing it toward officers. In response, officers discharged their weapons, striking and killing him. The Honolulu Police Department Interim Chief and Honolulu’s Professional Standards Office are handling investigative oversight.

On June 25, 2025, just after 3:45 p.m., Honolulu Police officers in an unmarked vehicle pursued a stolen pickup truck on Hana Street in Makaha. Police claim the driver, 38-year-old Iosua Stevens, reversed and rammed the police vehicle, causing it to catch fire and temporarily trapping one of the officers inside. Officers then opened fire, shooting Stevens multiple times. He was taken to Queens Medical Center in critical condition and placed on life support. Police stated he was wanted on three felony warrants and had been charged earlier in June with assaulting an officer. No firearm was recovered at the scene. The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office and Independent Investigations Division are reviewing the incident. Questions have been raised by community members over whether deadly force was necessary and whether alternative tactics could have prevented the escalation.

On June 22, 2025, Honolulu Police responded around 6:30 a.m. to reports of shots fired from a boat off Sand Island Access Road. Officers located a man barricaded on the vessel. Police attempted two taser deployments and spent nearly six hours negotiating. At 12:51 p.m., the man exited the boat’s hatch and pointed a shotgun at Specialized Services Division officers. One officer shot him. The man was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead. The incident remains under investigation.

On March 16, 2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Hawaii Police Department officers responded to a reported home invasion in the 18-1300 block of Ihope Road in Mountain View. Christopher Lucrisia had allegedly entered the residence, threatened the occupants, and stolen keys to a vehicle parked outside.Lucrisia, who was armed with a rifle and a pistol, hid in the stolen vehicle on the property. As detectives and members of the Specialized Response Team (SRT) arrived, Lucrisia began firing at them. One officer returned fire. After a period of attempted negotiations and no response from Lucrisia, officers deployed a drone and observed him unresponsive in the vehicle's rear seat. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. This incident concluded a nearly three-day manhunt that began after Lucrisia allegedly shot and injured a police officer on March 14, 2025.

On 03/04/2025, at approximately 12:00 a.m., Hawaii Island police responded to a residence on Hibiscus Street in Mountain View after a woman reported that her daughter's ex-boyfriend, 28-year-old Isaiah Kaleo JiaanFourshey, had arrived looking for her daughter. After being informed that his ex-girlfriend was not present, Fourshey allegedly fired multiple shots at the woman's husband, missing him, before fleeing the scene. Shortly thereafter, police received reports of a shooting at a nearby residence on Plumeria Street, where they found 25-year-old Latisha Soares, identified as Fourshey's ex-girlfriend, with multiple gunshot wounds; she was pronounced dead at the scene. A manhunt ensued, and at approximately 6:00 p.m., officers located Fourshey near the Namakanipaio Campground off Highway 11 in Volcano.During the attempted apprehension, Fourshey was shot by police. He was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:00 p.m.

On February 1, 2025, at approximately 3:46 p.m., Maui Police Department officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence on Noho Place in Pukalani, Maui, Hawaii. Upon arrival at approximately 3:54 p.m., officers encountered a woman armed with an edged weapon. During the confrontation, an officer fired, killing the woman in her home. The circumstances under which police opened fire have not been disclosed. The Maui Police Department is handling the case in internal self-investigation.

Believed to have committed a 1991 murder of teenager Dana Ireland on Big Island, three men were wrongly convicted. One of them served 20 years until DNA testing of old evidence resulted in him being exonerated. Police then had the original DNA match and tested an object Albert Lauro Jr. discarded and had a match. When police arrived to formally interview and arrest him, he committed suicide under police duress.

Honolulu Police followed a man by drone who they believed was involved in prior bank robberies. The man allegedly pointed a gun at a police drone. The man locked himself into a condo. Police fired less lethal rounds and a barrage of gunfire, killing the man.

Plainclothes officers jumped 77-year-old Thomas Matias when he got on a moped at the Ala Moana Center and violently arrested him. Police allege that the moped was stolen. Matias was injured in the arrest and taken to an ER. He told his daughter that police had instructed him to say no if asked whether he wanted to be admitted for his injuries and he had complied and signed out against medical advice. His pain and his sister found him in his apartment with extreme head and rib and chest pain. He was found to have broken ribs and other substantial injuries from the attack. He died from these injuries on January 10, 2024. After seeing the coroner’s report of injuries, the investigation was changed to manslaughter against the officers.

His daughter stated that the moped he was attacked for was purchased by him and to the family’s knowledge not stolen. There is no BWC footage as the officers were plainclothes. Surveillance footage was confirmed to exist but has not been released by police.

An unnamed man had an argument with his brother in Puna. He fled with a gun when Puna PD arrived. Police chased him to another location, whereupon he fled again. An unnamed 38-year-old man was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following an hours-long police standoff in the Kapilina Beach Homes community in Ewa Beach. Nathaniel Taualai, 32, was shot and killed by Honolulu police on June 23, 2023, during a standoff on Kalauipo Street in Pearl City. Police said Taualai had broken into his ex-girlfriend’s home and refused to surrender. During the hours-long standoff, he allegedly had 2 knives and later took an unattended police rifle. Officers opened fire, hitting him four times. A report released two years later ruled the shooting justified as suicide by cop for unclear reasons despite police having shot him and there being no witness to confirm that he had been suicidal.

On Sunday, April 30, Maui police had received information on a Temporary Restraining Order Violation near mile marker 18.5 off Kamehameha V Highway in Wailua, Molokaʻi. Two officers came into contact with a 40-year-old Kaunakakai male who was carrying a machete. He walked toward the officers. Officers pointed tasers and guns at him and fired a taser. On Tuesday morning, March 7, 2023, Ka‘ū patrol officers received a call about a 42-year-old woman who had been shot during a domestic dispute in the 92-2000 block of Outrigger Drive in Ocean View. Detectives spotted Ronald Patrick Keahonui Kahihikolo on Kamakaeha Avenue and Palani Road. The man was uncooperative and police shot and killed him. No BWC exists as these were plainclothes officers who do not wear bodycams.

On April 5, 2021, the Honolulu Police Department located a white Honda Civic reported stolen from Kailua and linked to a series of crimes, including a purse snatching and armed robbery, during a high-speed chase in Honolulu. Iremamber Sykap, age 16, was driving the stolen vehicle when officers engaged after the pursuit ended on Kalākaua Avenue. Officer Geoffrey Thom fired ten rounds into the rear window of the vehicle; two other officers also discharged their weapons. Medical records show Sykap was shot in the back of the head and shoulders. Despite being inside a stopped car, the shooting terminated his life. The department initially withheld body-camera footage, citing an investigation. Charges were filed against Thom (second-degree murder) and the two other officers (attempted murder) but were dismissed in August 2021. The case prompted significant public outcry within the Micronesian community in Hawai‘i and a broader debate about use-of-force and racial profiling.
