On 08/27/2025, 46-year-old Martin James Benes was shot and killed by Dallas Police Department SWAT officers Samuel McDonnold and Christopher Nilsen inside his family's home in the 13800 block of Far Hills Lane in Far North Dallas. The encounter began the previous evening after Benes' mother called 911 seeking help because her son was suicidal, had been drinking alcohol and had a knife. Benes' brother also contacted 911 expressing concern that Benes might harm himself or their mother.

Dallas police arrived at approximately 7:40 p.m. Body-camera video later released by the department shows Benes' mother answering the door and telling officers she needed “medical” help. Benes appeared farther inside the house and told officers to stay away from him. Officers drew their guns and moved outside while ordering him to put down the knife.

Benes briefly came outside while carrying the knife and then returned inside the residence. Police removed his mother from the immediate area and established a perimeter. The department called its SWAT team and attempted for several hours to persuade Benes to come outside.

Police also learned that Benes had an outstanding felony warrant related to an aggravated-assault-with-a-deadly-weapon family-violence case. The immediate police response, however, had begun with his family's calls reporting a suicidal crisis and requesting assistance.

After 1:20 a.m., SWAT officers entered the residence. Body-camera video shows officers moving upstairs and finding Benes lying on a bed, wrapped in a sheet and facing away from them. Officers saw a knife near him and quietly discussed attempting to use a Taser.

Officers illuminated Benes with flashlights and attempted to take him into custody. Police deployed Tasers twice, but neither deployment incapacitated him. Benes got up from the bed while holding the knife. Video shows him moving toward the officers and swinging his arms and the knife in their direction.

Senior Corporals Samuel McDonnold and Christopher Nilsen opened fire, striking Benes. After initially falling, Benes sat upright and moved toward the nearby banister as though attempting to stand. An officer fired again. Benes collapsed. A SWAT officer checked him and reported that he had no pulse before officers began medical treatment and called Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel into the residence. Benes died at the scene.

Benes' family strongly criticized the police response after viewing the released recordings. His brother, Paul Benes, said the family had repeatedly sought medical and mental-health assistance and accused police of escalating the crisis rather than providing the requested help. On 08/24/2025, shortly before midnight, San Antonio police responded to the Knights Inn at 4039 East Houston Street after receiving a call for help involving 34-year-old Justin Andrew Hernandez, who was harming himself inside a hotel room. The initial police account said another person inside the room called for assistance, although subsequent San Antonio Police Department reports did not describe that person’s involvement.

Officers Kevin Nguyen, William O’Brien and Samuel Whiteside responded to the hotel. Police said Hernandez was cutting himself with what officers initially described as a cutting instrument. Later police information identified the object as a broken glass bottle.

The officers initially spoke with Hernandez from outside the hotel room. According to the later account of the encounter, Hernandez told the officers to shoot him. Officers told Hernandez to put down the broken bottle and attempted to persuade him to come outside for medical treatment, telling him that EMS personnel were nearby to help him.

Police alleged that Hernandez then came out of the room holding the broken bottle and moved rapidly toward the officers. Nguyen, O’Brien and Whiteside opened fire, striking Hernandez multiple times.

On 08/15/2025, at approximately 3:12 a.m., Laredo Police Department officers responded to West Montgomery Street and McDonnell Avenue after a caller reported a man making threats who appeared to be under the influence and possibly armed. The man left the area before officers located him. Minutes later, police received another call from the 300 block of West Elm Street reporting an assault. Police later identified the man involved in both incidents as 29-year-old Carlos Fernandez.
Police said Fernandez approached a man who was asleep inside a vehicle, struck him in the head with a bottle and continued kicking him in the head after he was on the ground. Surveillance video reviewed and later shown to reporters captured the assault. Investigators also alleged Fernandez had been involved in a vehicle burglary in the same area earlier that morning.
Officers located Fernandez near West Saunders Street and East San Francisco Avenue. Fernandez ran from officers while carrying an object wrapped in cloth. Police followed him and repeatedly ordered him to drop the object. According to the department, officers attempted to de-escalate the encounter and one officer deployed a Taser. Police said Fernandez then directed the cloth-wrapped object toward the officers, and a second officer fired his handgun, striking Fernandez in the abdomen and left arm.
Police initially described the object as an apparent knife. Investigators subsequently determined that Fernandez had been holding a pair of scissors wrapped in a rag. Fernandez was transported to Laredo Medical Center and underwent treatment but died later that afternoon from the gunshot wounds.
Laredo Police Chief Miguel A. Rodriguez Jr. later disclosed that the officer who killed Fernandez was 24 years old, had served approximately two years with the Laredo Police Department and was placed on administrative reassignment while the shooting was investigated. The department did not publicly identify the officer by name in the reporting located for this update.
Fernandez's family disputed the necessity of the shooting and publicly demanded additional information and accountability. On 08/18/2025, his mother, wife, children and other relatives and supporters demonstrated for nearly three hours outside Laredo Police Department headquarters. On 08/14/2025, shortly after 11:00 a.m., Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office deputies responded to a home at 11016 Tanglehead Court in northwest Harris County for a family dispute involving custody of two children. The conflict involved 78-year-old Rafael Rodriguez and his son-in-law, Franklin Portillo, whose wife—Rodriguez’s daughter and the mother of the children—had died approximately two years earlier. Portillo had arrived at the residence with the couple’s 9-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son amid an ongoing dispute over the children.
According to Harris County authorities, a Precinct 4 deputy arrived and attempted to mediate between the two men, with Rodriguez inside the residence and Portillo outside. Police alleged that Rodriguez then came out of the house armed with a gun and shot Portillo in the head while the deputy was present. The Precinct 4 deputy then fired at Rodriguez, striking him.
Emergency personnel attempted CPR on Portillo, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Rodriguez was transported to a hospital in critical condition and subsequently died from the deputy’s gunfire.
Rodriguez’s daughter, Daisy Jura, provided additional context concerning the family conflict. She said Rodriguez had gone to court in an effort to see his grandchildren and described the custody dispute as longstanding. Jura acknowledged that her father shot Portillo but said she believed Rodriguez acted because he wanted to protect the children and described him as a devoted father and grandfather.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office assumed responsibility for investigating both Portillo’s death and the Precinct 4 deputy’s fatal shooting of Rodriguez. The deputy was placed on administrative leave following the shooting. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office subsequently listed the incident in its homicide records for 11016 Tanglehead Court.

The pursuit continued for approximately 15 minutes through southwest Houston before ending in the 8800 block of Aspen Meadow Drive at approximately 7:25 p.m.
HPD alleged that the man exited his vehicle carrying two firearms. Officers ordered him to drop the weapons. Police further alleged that he did not comply and raised one of the firearms toward officers. Seven officers then opened fire: Sergeant L. Chaney and Officers J. Grawe, R. Vasquez, Q. Nguyen, R. Carballo, M. Meola and N. Jaramillo. The officers struck the man multiple times.
Officers provided medical aid until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. HPD reported that two firearms were associated with the encounter. The department's official shooting database records the deceased as a 34-year-old Latino man and classifies the weapon involved as a firearm.

On 08/11/2025, shortly after 1:00 a.m., police attempted to stop a 2018 Chrysler 300 driven by Jesus F. Estrada in the San Antonio area. San Antonio Police Department records state that Estrada continued driving away while officers pursued. Officers from the San Antonio, Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills police departments participated in the pursuit, which continued for approximately 20 minutes. Twenty-four-year-old Seth Nolan Palacios Cruz was a passenger in Estrada’s vehicle.
At approximately 1:30 a.m., the Chrysler was traveling on Harry Wurzbach Road near Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston while police continued pursuing it. According to SAPD, the vehicle was traveling at high speed immediately before Estrada lost control and crashed into a stone pillar outside the military installation. The impact caused the Chrysler to burst into flames.
Military police officers from Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston reached the burning vehicle and pulled Estrada and Cruz from the wreckage while San Antonio Fire Department personnel extinguished the fire. Cruz suffered fatal blunt-force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Bexar County Medical Examiner subsequently identified him as Seth Nolan Palacios Cruz, 24, and ruled his death accidental. Estrada survived with serious injuries and was transported to a hospital.
Police alleged that Estrada was intoxicated at the time of the crash. After his hospitalization, authorities arrested him and charged him with intoxication manslaughter, evading arrest and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Court records reported that his combined bail was initially set at $205,000.
The fatal crash occurred approximately 20 minutes after police initiated the attempted traffic stop, with officers from three separate police departments pursuing the vehicle before it struck the pillar. Cruz was a passenger and was not the person police were attempting to stop.

On 08/07/2025 at approximately 9:09 p.m., Paul Rodriguez called the Bell County Communications Center and reported that he was outside the Temple Police Department and was not afraid to shoot himself. He repeatedly told dispatchers that he was "done," wanted police to shoot him, and said he was armed with a pistol. Officers responded to the front of the police department and began communicating with him.
During the approximately 11-minute encounter, Rodriguez held what appeared to be a handgun to his head while officers repeatedly attempted to de-escalate the situation and instructed him to drop the weapon. According to Temple police, Rodriguez lowered the weapon from his head and pointed it toward officers. Multiple officers fired their weapons, striking Rodriguez. Officers immediately rendered medical aid until Temple Fire & Rescue and EMS personnel arrived. Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The weapon Rodriguez carried was later determined to be a UMAREX .177-caliber BB air pistol designed to closely resemble a real handgun. Temple police released photographs of the BB pistol during a subsequent update.
The Texas Rangers assumed the criminal investigation into the shooting. The Temple Police Department also opened an internal administrative investigation. Seven Temple police officers were placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy pending completion of the investigations.

On 08/05/2025 at approximately 11:30 p.m., Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a disturbance in the 6900 block of Sigley Drive in Edinburg after receiving reports that a man was jumping fences and breaking neighbors' windows. Deputies located Gonzalo Reyes Hernandez, 34, lying on the driveway of a residence with visible head injuries. Witnesses reported that Hernandez had repeatedly struck his own head against the concrete driveway before deputies arrived. Deputies requested emergency medical services.
EMS personnel began treating Hernandez inside an ambulance. According to the sheriff's office, Hernandez became combative, exited the ambulance, and assaulted three deputies. Deputies restrained Hernandez and returned him to the ambulance so he could be transported to a hospital. While en route, his condition deteriorated despite lifesaving efforts. He was pronounced dead before arriving at the hospital.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office conducted a use-of-force review, which concluded that the deputies acted within department policy. An autopsy was ordered to determine Hernandez's cause and manner of death. At the sheriff's office request, the Texas Rangers opened an independent investigation into the in-custody death.
The investigation remains ongoing pending the results of the Medical Examiner's autopsy and the Texas Rangers' review.

On 08/02/2025 at approximately 2:00 a.m., deputies with the Harris County Precinct 7 Constable's Office observed a black Ford F-150 driven by Rene Hernandez, 21, strike multiple vehicles and attempted to stop it. Hernandez continued driving away at high speed while deputies pursued. On 07/09/2025 at approximately 9:55 a.m., officers with the Dallas Police Department responded to a mental health crisis call reporting a man armed with a knife in the 3000 block of Fairview Avenue, located in the Old East Dallas neighborhood. The man, later identified as 37-year-old Jake Miller, was reportedly seen by witnesses holding a knife to his own neck and behaving erratically, including kicking and damaging a door.

Ryan Louis Mosqueda, 27, armed with an assault rifle, tactical vest, and additional rifles and ammunition, launched an early-morning attack on the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol annex as agents arrived for work, allegedly firing "many many rounds" at the entrance of the building.
