OOn the evening of February 24, 2025, Fond du Lac County Sheriff's deputies contacted 26-year-old Jesús Armando Méndez Berry, who had an outstanding felony warrant. A citizen had reported seeing a handgun in Méndez Berry's waistband. Deputies located him in the 6300 block of Cherrywood Drive in the Town of Fond du Lac. After Méndez Berry allegedly refused to follow repeated commands, a deputy discharged a non-lethal weapon. Méndez Berry then produced what deputies believed to be a firearm, prompting another deputy to discharge their firearm at 6:22 p.m., striking him. Life-saving measures were attempted, and Méndez Berry was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Upon further investigation, it has been confirmed that Jesús Armando Méndez Berry was holding a black Gamo 430 CO2 Pellet/BB Handgun at the time of the incident. Amherst Police arrived at 450 Mill Avenue to arrest a man for unknown reasons. Police described him as “armed and dangerous.” Police engaged the man in a shootout and called SWAT. A lengthy militarized siege on the home ensued. A neighbor described SWAT using what may have been an armored SWAT caterpillar or other heavy equipment to tear away several windows and much of the front of the house while the residents were inside. Police arrested several people in the home for harboring a fugitive. Miller who was wanted for allegedly firing at or trying to harm a police officer was found dead inside of the home after a lengthy war-like engagement with SWAT. It is not immediately clear whether SWAT shot him or he died from suicide under police duress.
