LaSalle PD responded to a call about a “suspicious vehicle” around 5:05 p.m. near 165 South 2nd St.and made contact with Juston Michael Reffel and shot and killed him. He had some open warrants.
He drew the ire of officer Erik Hernandez for having an "unprofessional" paint job that according to the training officer looked like it was home-made. "A roller paint job on that car? With that headlight? That’s suspicious" said training officer Johnson, adding "you have every reason to start questioning somebody about that because that is against DMV!" The officers were also seen on bodycam to pick an issue with the vehicle having out of state Oklahoma plates while circling the unoccupied parked car. The officers ended up in the store, looking for the driver who saw he was being targeted and left through the back door of the store, accidentally triggering the store alarm. The excited officers are seen shouting, running through the store with guns wildly pointed around the store, exiting the store and finding the man they had been targeting in the car. Reffel is seen starting the car when he saw wildly screaming officers with guns pointed at him and he tried to leave the chaotic scene by car. As he drove away, Officer Hernandez is seen firing multiple shots into the moving vehicle. Juston Reffel died from being murdered by Officer Hernandez.
Police officially explained the death with a suspicious vehicle with out of state plates, a less than perfect paint job on the car and also the offense of being double-parked. No other accusations can be found against the deceased from LaSalle PD so far. Officer Erik Hernandez was indicted for second-degree murder on 11/7/23. Officer Hernandez was sentenced to 6 years for the murder on April 26, 2025.

Jackson County deputies escalated a chase on Page Avenue in Blackman Township until the vehicle crashed on E. Michigan Avenue and Dettman Road. The five occupants of the Jeep Wrangler, ranging in ages from 15 to 17, had been driving around the county shooting at vehicles with an Orbeez gel ball toy gun prior to the chase. An Orbeez gun is a toy gun that shoots small balls made of gel.
Deputies had attempted to initiate a traffic stop, activated their overhead lights and siren and chased the Jeep until it crashed and rolled over multiple times near the intersection of Roberts and E. Ganson streets.
Deputies approached the crashed vehicle with guns drawn and detained three teens. Jordan Jarrell, a 15-year-old boy was severely injured after being ejected during the first crash and died from his injuries. Another 15-year-old was treated at the hospital before being taken by helicopter to Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor in critical condition.Another passenger remains in serious condition at Henry Ford with a broken neck.Officers found an Orbeez gun and fifth of alcohol in a search of the vehicle.

On April 28, 2023, Thermopolis officer Mike Mascorro claims that he investigated drug use from another incident and time and place and in the process, he illegally entered the home of Buck Laramore without a warrant or probable cause, as established later.
Laramore saw an intruder in his home and picked up a .45 and shot and injured intruder Mascorro. Mascorro shot and killed Laramore in his own home after the unlawful entry of the residence. Officer Mascorro was treated for his injuries, cleared medically to return to work but remains off duty with full pay. He was cleared by a Special Prosecutor on the basis of self-defense despite the fact this took place inside of someone else's home the officer had broken into. His PD found no grounds for which to terminate him. The officer continues to be off work on payroll.
