On May 23, 2024, at approximately 12:42 p.m., a Des Moines Police Department detective observed a stolen 2013 Hyundai Sonata near Ninth Street and Center Street. The detective "monitored" the vehicle as it traveled south through downtown Des Moines. Upon entering McRae Park, a marked patrol vehicle approached, at which point the Hyundai exited the roadway, maneuvered around the patrol car, and accelerated eastbound on Davis Avenue at a high rate of speed.

Just moments later, officers found the Hyundai had crashed in the 600 block of Davis Avenue. The vehicle had struck a curb, left the roadway, and collided with a tree, resulting in all occupants being ejected. The driver, identified as 15-year-old James "JT" Taylor III, and two passengers, 18-year-old Jamarion Jackson and 15-year-old Eric Vortes Jr., sustained fatal injuries. Lewis was a suspect in a May 5 shooting incident in Denver. As officers approached, Lewis was observed exiting his red Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Body-worn camera footage shows Lewis raising his hands, holding a cellphone, before being shot by Officer Michael Dieck. Lewis fell to the ground, stating, "I don't have nothing," and was transported to a hospital, where he died two days later.

Officer Dieck, a 12-year veteran of the Aurora Police Department, was placed on administrative leave following the incident. The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team conducted an independent investigation into the shooting. On October 12, 2024, District Attorney John Kellner announced that Officer Dieck would not be prosecuted, stating that he believed Lewis was holding a gun and was about to fire at officers.

On 05/23/2024, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) officers responded to a 911 call regarding a double homicide at a residence on the 3300 block of Hartselle Way in Rancho Cordova, California. Upon arrival, officers found that 30-year-old Thomas Konvalin had shot and killed both of his parents inside their home.

The Elkhart County SWAT team was deployed to the scene. Officers established a perimeter and attempted negotiations with Smith. Despite hours of communication efforts, Smith refused to surrender. Shortly after midnight, a gunshot was heard from inside the residence. SWAT officers breached the home and discovered Smith deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On May 22, 2024, Cape Fear Regional Special Teams SWAT Team and Wilmington PD went to the home to conduct a search warrant as part of a narcotics investigation. Wilmington PD applied a tactical distraction device on a window. Malik Samuell Thompson allegedly opened fire, hit a SWAT officer in the ballistic vest. Police shot and gravely injured him. He died six days later on 05/28/2024 in the hospital from his injuries. Fentanyl, Xanax and cocaine were found in the home.

On May 18, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a welfare check regarding a suicidal male armed with a firearm in the 4200 block of Deerfield Hills Road. Before officers arrived, a shot was fired from inside the residence, and other occupants were able to safely exit. Upon arrival, officers located 40-year-old Michael Ray Hurst Jr. inside the apartment and attempted to engage him.

As officers approached, Hurst reportedly pointed a firearm at them. Officers immediately ordered him to drop the weapon. When Hurst failed to comply and continued to raise the firearm, at least one officer discharged their weapon, fatally striking Hurst. Officers then provided emergency medical aid, and Hurst was transported to a hospital, where he died two days later. No officers or bystanders were harmed during the incident.
