On May 15, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., off-duty Atlanta Police Officer Koby Minor fatally shot his Lyft driver, 35-year-old Reginald T. Folks, near South Fulton Parkway and Stonewall Tell Road in Union City, Georgia. Officer Minor, who was on unpaid administrative leave due to a prior drug-related arrest, claimed he felt threatened during the ride. He alleged that Folks spoke in a foreign language via the car's Bluetooth system and ignored his requests to stop the vehicle. Believing he was being kidnapped and suspecting an attempt to recruit him into a "gay fraternity," Minor stated that when Folks reached toward the back seat, he discharged his firearm three times, striking Folks in the head. After the shooting, Minor broke a window to exit the vehicle and awaited law enforcement's arrival. Folks was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer initiated a traffic stop; however, the driver, 26-year-old Brandon Isiah Martinez, exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Off-duty Pineville PD officer Sgt. Adam Roberts who was moonlighting as store security at Food Lion chased and shot and killed Dennis Bodden for alleged shoplifting. Dennis Bodden was confronted by Sgt. Adam Roberts of the Pineville Police Department who was working off-duty security at a Food Lion on Johnston Road in south Charlotte after a shoplifting call. Bodden was accused of taking approximately $84 worth of groceries and wine. Roberts followed Bodden across the parking lot and down the sidewalk. Bodden, wearing headphones, did not immediately comply with orders to stop. Roberts deployed a Taser and Bodden allegedly defensively bit the officer’s arm during the physical struggle. Bodden walked toward his apartment complex. A second Pineville officer, Officer Randall Down, arrived. A confrontation ensued where Bodden struck Roberts and at one point grabbed Down’s radio cord. Roberts fired three shots, fatally wounding Bodden.

On January 8, 2026, Dennis Bodden’s mother filed a civil rights lawsuit in Mecklenburg County Superior Court against the town of Pineville, Sergeant Adam Roberts, Officer Randall down, seeking more than $10 million in damages for wrongful death, excessive force, failure to intervene, and violations of Bodden’s constitutional rights. Bodden had been an attorney (Rutgers and Cardozo law graduate) who volunteered on mental health hotlines.
Officer Roberts had previously shot and severely injured Timothy Rochell Caraway in 2020.

On May 10, 2024, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer located a stolen silver Hyundai Sonata stopped in the 1500 block of South 7th Street Trafficway. As the officer approached, three male occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The officer pursued them, during which one suspect, identified as 18-year-old Jordan Cole, allegedly fired at the officer. The officer returned fire, fatally wounding Cole. Another suspect was apprehended at the location, while the third remains unidentified.
