On May 3, 2024, around 11 p.m., Placer County Sheriff's deputies patrolling near the 500 block of South Auburn Street in Colfax identified a maroon van in a McDonald's parking lot that matched the description of a vehicle involved in a burglary the previous day. Deputies approached the van and contacted the occupant, 37-year-old Stephen Todd Sharp, who was reportedly uncooperative. Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation, Sharp opened fire on the deputies, striking Deputy Richard Porter. Deputies returned fire, and Sharp was later found deceased inside the van. Deputy Porter was transported to a hospital in critical but stable condition and was released on May 6, 2024. Sharp, originally from Tennessee, had been living out of his van in the Colfax area.

On May 3, 2024, Haleyville police initiated a pursuit of Joshua Heath Cosby, who did not stop. Police escalated a chase during which he crashed his vehicle by leaving the roadway and striking an embankment. He was transported to a local hospital where he was declared deceased.

On May 3, 2024, Orange Beach police initiated a high-speed pursuit after receiving a tip about a vehicle that had struck a pedestrian. The driver, 21-year-old Brooks Kaechele, fled west on Canal Road, and during the chase, he lost control of his 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The vehicle crashed into a guardrail, struck several traffic signs and trees, and then overturned into the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The car sank, and Kaechele, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene after being pulled from the water.

On May 2, 2024, at approximately 3:30 p.m., 29-year-old Isabella North flagged down a passerby near Denton Avenue and Dane Lane in Hudson, Florida, requesting assistance. The passerby contacted emergency services and handed the phone to North, who expressed homicidal thoughts and stated that she had a knife. Two deputies from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office arrived at her home. They saw her with a 12-inch knife. North walked towards them. Both deputies fired one shot each, striking her. The fatal shooting occurred in less than 30 seconds of the deputies first arriving and making contact with her. North was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. The two deputies have been placed on administrative leave. The names of the deputies have not been disclosed.

On May 2, 2024, at approximately 6 a.m., Beech Grove Police Department officers responded to a child custody dispute at an apartment complex in the 4400 block of Willow Bend Drive. A woman reported that 26-year-old Joshua Richard, the father of her child, was present outside of the agreed visitation hours.

Officers encountered Richard in the parking lot. According to police reports, Richard had a knife and allegedly ignored commands to drop it. Officers attempted de-escalation, including the use of a Taser, but Richard reportedly moved toward them. During the confrontation, Richard cut Lieutenant Jeff Bruner in the face with the knife. Lt. Bruner then opened fire, striking Richard, who was pronounced dead on location.

Lt. Bruner, a 19-year veteran of the department, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital. The other officers present were not injured. Following department protocol, all involved officers have been placed on administrative leave.

Tuscarawas County deputies found a disabled vehicle on the side of I-77 near dover in Dayton and noticed the driver to be displaying bizarre behaviors. An ambulance was called as were various SWAT officers. After some pressure, the man displayed a weapon. Police shot and killed him.

Witnesses stated that 35-year-old Lemar Brandon Qualls had pointed a gun at residents and made threats to shoot.

Officers received an update that Qualls had moved to the 3900 block of Broadway Street, where he was seen on a front porch brandishing a firearm and making threats. The resident, who did not know Qualls, reported that he had pointed the gun at her and struck it against a metal bar to show it was real.

Officers Ivan Flick and Randall Buck encountered Qualls on the porch. According to IMPD, Officer Flick approached Qualls, who was holding a handgun. Qualls reportedly raised the gun and pointed it toward Officer Flick. Officer Flick and Officer Buck opened fire, striking Qualls. Qualls was pronounced dead on the porch.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office confirmed Qualls' identity. A firearm was recovered from the scene, with evidence suggesting it had been struck by a bullet during the incident. Officer Flick’s body camera was not activated, while Officer Buck’s camera captured the event. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave.

On May 2, 2024, Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a request from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) at a residence in the 400 block of South Gramercy Place. DMH personnel were attempting to place 40-year-old Yong Yang on a 72-hour mental evaluation hold due to erratic and threatening behavior reported by his parents. Yang, diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder, allegedly attempted to assault a DMH employee. Upon arrival, officers made multiple attempts to communicate with Yang, who refused to exit the residence. Using a key provided by the family, officers entered the apartment and encountered Yang in the living room, armed with an 11-inch kitchen knife. Despite commands to drop the weapon, Yang advanced toward the officers, prompting Officer Andres Lopez to discharge his firearm, striking Yang. Paramedics pronounced Yang dead at the scene. The incident is under investigation by the LAPD's Force Investigation Division.

On May 2, 2024, at approximately 11:30 a.m., officers from the Raynham Police Department responded to a welfare check at the King Philip Street Apartments following a call from Stephen Maclean's girlfriend. She reported that Maclean had been acting aggressively after being fired from his job for arriving intoxicated and was exhibiting belligerent behavior.

Upon arrival, officers knocked on Maclean's apartment door. When he opened the door and pointed a handgun at them, two officers discharged their firearms, fatally wounding Maclean. A third officer deployed a taser. Officers immediately administered first aid until paramedics arrived. Maclean was transported to Morton Hospital in Taunton, where he was pronounced dead.

On May 2, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Mesa police responded to a domestic disturbance call involving a woman, later identified as 24-year-old Rachel Rodriguez, who was allegedly threatening her boyfriend with a knife. The man had reportedly been prevented from leaving the residence. Upon arrival, officers used a loudspeaker to instruct the woman to come out, but during the interaction, they heard the boyfriend's voice from inside the house. As a result of the threat and concern for the boyfriend's safety, police entered the home, where the woman allegedly still had the knife. Officers fatally shot Rodriguez inside the residence. The boyfriend was safely removed and unharmed. Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene by Mesa Fire Department personnel. The incident is considered isolated with no further threat to the community. The investigation into the shooting is being handled by the Mesa Police Department's Use of Force Unit.

On 05/01/2024, a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) patrol car traveling northbound on Gower Street attempted to cross Santa Monica Boulevard against a red light. The patrol car collided with a westbound vehicle, spinning the patrol car into a pedestrian crossing at a marked crosswalk. The pedestrian, described by LAPD as a 27-year-old visiting British man and a resident of the United Kingdom, was knocked under the patrol vehicle. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. LAPD has not released the names of the pedestrian or the involved officers. On 05/01/2024, at approximately 7:00 a.m., officers from the Catahoula Correctional Center were transporting two inmates, including 46-year-old Raymond Huddleston, to Baton Rouge for a court appearance. During transit on U.S. Highway 61 near the Mississippi state line, Huddleston claimed a medical emergency. Officers stopped in a truck stop parking lot to check on him.

As they opened the van’s rear door, Huddleston was found to have removed his restraints. He attacked the officers and allegedly attempted to disarm one of them. Huddleston then entered the driver’s seat of the transport van. At least one officer opened fire, killing him. Two officers sustained minor injuries. The Louisiana State Police are investigating the incident.

Zachariah White walked around in traffic erratically, then entered a nursing home where he entered random rooms. Police attacked him with a taser, then shot and killed him. Police allege he took the metal foot rest of a wheelchair, apparently after he was tasered, and came at police with it. This was the explanation given why the apparently unarmed man was killed. White reportedly wore a hospital wristband at the time he was killed. It is not immediately clear what his connection to the nursing home was. It is also unknown what he may have wanted when he entered the nursing home where he was killed. He was not reported to be violent other than a self-attempt effort with a wheelchair footpad after the taser attack.

The driver did not stop, leading police to escalate a chase. During the pursuit, the vehicle crashed near 7th Avenue and Douglas Street, resulting in the driver's death. On May 4, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers from the Aurora Police Department responded to a report of gunfire in the 1400 block of Clinton Street. Upon arrival, they found a 29-year-old man with a nonfatal gunshot wound to his leg. The man identified 28-year-old Jose Luis Rodriguez-Balderrama as the shooter. Rodriguez-Balderrama fled the scene in a red Ford Mustang.

Officers located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit, but lost sight of it shortly afterward. The pursuit was discontinued. Moments later, Rodriguez-Balderrama returned to the scene. Officers approached him near the victim’s apartment, where he was armed with a handgun. Despite orders to show his hands, Rodriguez-Balderrama allegedly pointed the firearm at the officers. In response, two officers discharged their weapons, fatally striking him. A .40-caliber Glock handgun was recovered at the scene.

Rodriguez-Balderrama was transported to a local hospital and was later pronounced deceased. The officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave, in line with department policy. The 18th Judicial District's Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) conducted an independent investigation into the incident. On September 30, 2024, CIRT concluded that the officers' actions were justified, as Rodriguez-Balderrama posed an imminent threat to the officers and the community.

On April 30, 2024, at approximately 2:30 a.m., officers from the Littleton Police Department observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed near West Belleview Avenue and South Federal Boulevard. The officers initiated a traffic stop; however, the driver fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit. The driver, later identified as 31-year-old Joby Vigil, continued to evade officers, eventually crashing into several parked vehicles near West 2nd Avenue and South Garrison Street.

Following the crash, Vigil exited his vehicle and, according to police reports, fired shots at the officers. In response, officers discharged their weapons, fatally striking Vigil. A firearm was recovered at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.

On April 29, 2024, Florida Highway Patrol attempted to stop a 23-year-old male driver for a traffic violation on Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers, Florida. The driver did not stop. Florida Highway Patrol escalated the chase at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The chase ended when the vehicle lost control on the interstate exit, struck a curb, and came to a stop. Officers found the driver deceased in the vehicle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As of December 4, 2024, the identity of the driver and the officers involved has not been released. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is currently investigating the incident.

A Dona Ana County deputy was called on a call for an unknown person on Oasis drive. The deputy realized the man had an open warrant and tried to arrest him. The man resisted and the deputy allegedly tasered him, causing him to seize up. The man took the taser away from the attacking deputy. The deputy then shot and killed him.

SUMMARY:On 04/29/2024, officers from a U.S. Marshals Service task force and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department attempted to serve felony warrants to 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr. at a residence on Galway Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hughes fired shots at officers with an AR-15–style rifle. Officers opened fire, killing Hughes.

Four officers were killed, including Deputy U.S. Marshal Sam Poloche, North Carolina Department of Adult Correction officers William Alden Elliot and Thomas Weeks Jr., and CMPD officer Joshua Eyer, who later died at the hospital.

Four other officers sustained injuries during the incident, including three CMPD officers and one Statesville Police Department officer.
