On 05/18/2021, law enforcement units responded to a 911 call in Chamblee reporting a kidnapping. Recognizing the vehicle from the call, officers pursued the car into downtown Decatur, Georgia, where the vehicle crashed at West Howard Ave and N. McDonough St. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Tyrone Penny, exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. During the pursuit and after officers attempted to incapacitate him, multiple officers fired their weapons and Penny was struck and later pronounced dead. The kidnapping victim was reported safe, and no officers were injured.

On 05/18/2021, a 22-year-old man from Hilton Head Island was killed in a crash on U.S. 278. His sister alleges the high-speed driving was connected to a nearby police pursuit. The crash occurred when the driver lost control of his car and struck a guardrail. Law-enforcement confirmed the vehicle was traveling at very high speed at the time. On May 18, 2021, Salisbury Police Officer B.W. Jones struck and killed pedestrian Howard Miller, 59, while responding to a mental health call. Officer Jones was traveling eastbound on Old Concord Road near Gold Hill Drive; the exact speed at the time of the incident has not been disclosed. The area has limited street lighting. On 05/18/2021, Englewood police officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked near an apartment complex. Officers checked the license plate and determined the vehicle had been reported stolen. Caleb Grisenti was seated in the driver’s seat with a woman in the passenger seat when officers attempted to make contact. According to police, as officers approached, Grisenti moved the vehicle forward while officers were positioned close to it, and officers reported being pulled as the vehicle moved. Officers then fired their weapons, shooting and killing Grisenti at the scene. A Critical Incident Response Team review and the 18th Judicial District Attorney later ruled the shooting justified. No officers were charged.

On 05/18/2021, Montgomery police officers responded to reports of a possible kidnapping involving a man and a woman and obtained warrants for reckless endangerment and first-degree kidnapping. Officers received a tip that 32-year-old Gary Moncrief was at the Microtel Inn & Suites. Police say there was an exchange of gunfire when officers approached, and Moncrief was shot and killed during the encounter near a vehicle in which his mother, aunt, and a family friend were present. Moncrief’s estate and family have disputed police accounts, asserting he was unarmed and killed as he got into the car, and have sought access to video of the incident. On May 18, 2021, at approximately 11:00 a.m., deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported domestic assault at a residence in the 1500 block of Queens Branch Road near Wimer, Oregon. Before their arrival, 32-year-old Rodney Purslow left the home in a vehicle. The injured victim, identified as hisfather, informed deputies that Purslow might be armed and was potentially a danger to himself.

On May 17, 2021, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a Monterey Park Police Department officer was nearing the end of his shift and went to the Monterey Park Fire Department's headquarters, located in the 300 block of West Newmark Avenue, to refuel his vehicle. A man, later identified as 57-year-old Yong Liu, followed the officer in a Nissan SUV into a secured parking lot. After the officer parked and exited his vehicle, Liu, armed with a knife, allegedly charged at the officer. The officer opened fire, striking Liu. Liu was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On 05/17/2021, the Dickinson Police Department responded to a report of a domestic incident involving a weapon at the 3300 block of Fourth Avenue East around 1:14 a.m. Upon arrival, officers reported that Xavier A. Kilby fired from inside the apartment toward officers or another individual. Police opened fire, striking Kilby. He was pronounced deceased at the location. On 05/17/2021, Peoria police officers encountered Garrett Sheppard in a gas station parking lot after observing a vehicle with a license plate that was not registered to it. An officer approached the vehicle and a confrontation occurred. According to police, Sheppard moved inside the vehicle and was believed by the officer to be reaching for a handgun. An officer then shot and killed Sheppard at the scene. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office later reviewed the shooting and cleared the officer of wrongdoing. No criminal charges were filed against the officer.

On 05/17/2021, Charles County Sheriff's Office deputies responded after a family member reported that Denzell Nathan Clarke, who was wanted by police, was experiencing a mental health crisis. On May 16, 2021, at approximately 2:14 a.m., officers observed a vehicle driven by Marcus "Marc the Barber" Jeffries driving erratically. Suspecting he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, officers attempted to stop the vehicle. Jeffries fled the scene, and a pursuit followed through surrounding neighborhoods. The chase ended when Jeffries crossed railroad tracks at a high rate of speed and crashed into a pole, killing him.

On 05/15/2021, Phoenix Police initiated a traffic stop near Interstate 17 after identifying a vehicle with expired plates. During the stop the driver fired shots toward an officer and struck a patrol vehicle, then abandoned the vehicle near 29th Avenue and Myrtle Avenue and fled into a neighborhood. Officers conducted a search and heard a gunshot. They located the man dead in a wooded area from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the active police search that followed the armed encounter.

Cedric Vick, 22, was reportedly armed when he crashed near West 1st Avenue and North Perry Street after Denver Police escalated a pursuit. The trooper allegedly "called off the chase" due to inclement weather and high speeds, just before the Explorer veered off the roadway, struck a parked vehicle, overturned, and hit a utility pole. The Explorer was occupied by four juveniles, including 15-year-old passenger Trashawn Blake Harrison, who was ejected from the vehicle and died. Three other juveniles were injured.

On May 10, 2021, Deputy James T. Webster, 51, was off duty but driving his Jefferson County Sheriff's Department-issued 2016 Ford Explorer westbound on Clifty Drive in Madison, Indiana. During this time, he struck and killed Hunter Alan Robinson, 22, who was also traveling westbound on Clifty Drive in the roadway on a skateboard.

Officers responded to a welfare check at the Spanish Trails Inn around 9:45 p.m. on May 10, 2021, after a man was reportedly refusing to let a woman leave. Upon arrival, officers determined Kalon J. Horton might have been under the influence of an unknown substance and needed medical attention. He was taken into custody without a warrant and transferred to a medical center for a mental evaluation. Horton was released by the hospital overnight. Early the next morning, officers were called to a shooting in progress at an apartment where a woman and two children were present. Officers arrived and announced themselves, requesting the man to come outside. After receiving no response, they entered the apartment, where they shot and killed Horton.

On 05/10/2021, officers with the San Luis Obispo Police Department were serving a search warrant at an apartment on Camellia Court in San Luis Obispo, California. During the operation, gunfire occurred. One police officer was shot and killed, and a second officer was shot and wounded. Police shot Edward Zamora Giron during the encounter. He died at the scene.

On May 9, 2021, Albuquerque Police Department officers were working near Iliff and Coors in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when they were flagged down regarding an individual reportedly throwing rocks at vehicles in a hotel parking lot. Upon attempting to make contact, the individual, identified as Justin Anaya, fled on foot. He crossed various fences and entered Interstate 40, where he was struck and killed by a vehicle.

On 05/09/2021, a fatal police pursuit in Stockbridge, Georgia ended when a fleeing car crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 75 near Eagles Landing Parkway. A male passenger in the fleeing vehicle was killed at the scene. The pursuit began when officers attempted to stop the vehicle for a suspected traffic violation. The driver survived and was charged with vehicular homicide and other offenses.
