Paul Desmarais
Age :41
Gender :Male
Race : White
Date : 05/11/2026
Location : Bucyrus Plaza Apartments
City : Bucyrus
County : Crawford
State : Ohio
Agency : Bucyrus Police Department
Officer(s) : Not disclosed
Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Killed by police during disturbance call
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/11/2026, Bucyrus Police Department officers responded to Bucyrus Plaza Apartments and the 900 block of East Warren Street after reports that Paul Desmarais was threatening residents, damaging property, and acting erratically. Police said officers encountered Desmarais wearing body armor and carrying a firearm inside the apartment complex area. Authorities evacuated nearby residents and closed surrounding streets as the situation escalated into an hours-long armed barricade standoff involving multiple law enforcement agencies, tactical teams, and bomb technicians.
Police said Desmarais refused to surrender during negotiations that lasted roughly 13 to 14 hours overnight. Officers deployed chemical agents into the residence and repeatedly attempted to force him out. Authorities stated Desmarais wore a gas mask during the standoff, which police said reduced the effectiveness of the gas deployment. Neighbors reported hearing repeated explosions and described police tearing into portions of the apartment structure during breaching operations. Tactical vehicles and armored equipment were brought to the area as officers attempted to gain access to the apartment.
Police later claimed Desmarais fired shots during the confrontation and threatened officers with explosive devices. Authorities said investigators recovered suspected explosive materials and components for additional devices from inside the residence after the shooting. During the final confrontation, officers opened fire and killed Desmarais. Schools in the area were temporarily closed during the operation because of the ongoing armed standoff and explosive concerns. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was assigned to investigate the shooting.

Mary Alice Love
Age :37
Gender :Female
Race : Black
Date : 05/11/2026
Location : 1100 block of Ashbrook Drive
City : Mundelein
County : Lake
State : Illinois
Agency : Mundelein Police Department
Officer(s) : Christopher Brigano
Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Killed by police during mental health welfare check
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/11/2026 at approximately 5:57 p.m., Mary Alice Love’s mother, Jeffry Love, called 911 from the family’s home in the 1100 block of Ashbrook Drive because Love was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and making suicidal statements. Jeffry told the dispatcher that Love had bipolar disorder, did not want to live and had asked her mother to call police so officers would kill her. Jeffry repeatedly expressed fear that police would shoot her daughter and made clear that she was calling for help, not asking police to use force. Love’s sister separately called 911 and reported that the family had contacted the Lake County Crisis Center and that she was concerned about her mother remaining in the house with Love.
Mundelein police officers arrived carrying ballistic shields and initially spoke with Jeffry at the front door. Jeffry wanted to know what officers planned to do and asked them to come inside. Love was outside, seated alone in a chair on the rear patio, separated from the officers by a closed sliding-glass door. When officers walked through the house and saw Love through the glass, one officer reported that she had a knife. Police later claimed she possessed two large knives.
Rather than maintaining the physical barrier provided by the closed glass door, slowing the encounter or allowing a mental health professional to communicate with Love, the officers crowded into the room near the patio entrance and began physically moving Jeffry away from the door. Two officers grabbed or guided Jeffry, causing her to partially fall backward onto a couch. The disturbance immediately drew Love’s attention. Love stood from the patio chair, yelled and walked toward the sliding door while carrying knives.
Love opened the sliding-glass door and began entering her family’s home. Sergeant Christopher Brigano, positioned inside, immediately fired four rounds, striking Love multiple times. The available video does not show Brigano attempting to speak with Love, ordering her to drop the knives or warning that he would shoot before firing. Love’s family and a nearby resident also reported hearing no verbal commands before the four gunshots. The knives fell onto the patio as Love collapsed.
Firefighter-paramedics had been staged nearby while police handled the call. Officers requested them at approximately 6:11 p.m. after declaring the scene safe. Paramedics transported Love to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined that she died from multiple gunshot wounds. Brigano was transported for an evaluation and placed on administrative leave.
Brigano was an 18-year Mundelein Police Department veteran and had served approximately four and a half years as a patrol sergeant. The department described him as trained in Crisis Intervention Team response. Village compensation records dated May 2026 continued to list Christopher Brigano as a police sergeant.
The central reason Love was killed was that police knew before arriving that she was contemplating “suicide by cop,” but then created a close-range confrontation in the doorway she would have to use to reenter her own home. Love initially remained seated outside behind a closed glass barrier. The officers’ attempt to forcibly move her mother caused Love to rise and come toward the door. Brigano interpreted her possession of knives and movement through the doorway as an immediate deadly threat and fired four times. The family maintains that Love never pointed a knife at anyone, never attacked anyone and was shot without warning. Their attorney characterized the response as a series of tactical errors in which officers escalated the crisis they had been called to resolve.
The Mundelein Police Department later released a narrated and edited compilation containing excerpts from the 911 calls and selected body-camera footage rather than the complete raw recordings. The department replayed the shooting in slow motion and added graphics identifying what it said was a knife. News reporting noted that the graphics appeared to identify only one knife despite the department’s repeated claim that Love carried two. The family accused the department of selectively editing and presenting the recordings in a way that portrayed Love as an aggressor while omitting broader context about the officers’ actions.
Love’s family demanded release of all unedited body-camera and audio recordings, Brigano’s termination, suspension of two other officers involved in the response, an independent state and federal investigation, a public apology and changes to the village’s handling of mental health calls. Approximately 100 relatives, residents and supporters protested outside Mundelein Village Hall and marched to the police station on 06/18/2026. Family members and supporters subsequently attended multiple Village Board meetings demanding action.
The family was represented at different stages by civil-rights attorneys including Brandon Brown and Kevin W. O’Connor. Brown’s firm announced shortly after the shooting that it had been retained to represent Love’s family and estate. O’Connor later publicly represented the family during demonstrations and the coroner proceedings.
On 07/29/2026, a Lake County coroner’s jury ruled Love’s death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. During the inquest, jurors questioned why Brigano did not use a Taser. Brigano reportedly testified that he did not believe a Taser would work. The family argued that this explanation was especially troubling because Brigano was a supervisor and crisis-intervention-trained officer. The homicide finding determines that Love was killed by another person but does not by itself decide whether Brigano committed a crime.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is conducting the outside investigation required by Illinois law. Following the coroner’s inquest, the investigative file was being forwarded to Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart for a determination concerning criminal charges. The family has asked Rinehart to prosecute Brigano and has continued demanding that Mundelein terminate him.
PENDING UPDATE:
A substantial amount remains pending in this case. This includes the state’s attorney’s final use-of-force and criminal review, any decision concerning charges against Christopher Brigano, Mundelein’s internal disciplinary decision, release of the complete body-camera and dispatch records, the family’s planned independent release or analysis of the unedited video, and anticipated civil-rights litigation by Love’s estate and family.

Sterling Jones
Age :22
Gender :Male
Race : Black
Date : 05/09/2026
Location : West Thompson Street and North 15th Street
City : Philadelphia
County : Philadelphia
State : Pennsylvania
Agency : Philadelphia Police Department
Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Vehicle
Event : Driver killed by police chase crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/09/2026, 22-year-old Sterling Jones was killed when the ATV he was driving collided with a Toyota sedan at West Thompson and North 15th streets in North Philadelphia. Newly obtained surveillance video and an investigation by attorneys representing Jones's father indicate that Philadelphia police officers were pursuing Jones immediately before the fatal crash.
The initiating reason for the police pursuit was Jones and other riders operating ATVs and dirt bikes on Philadelphia streets and allegedly performing wheelies near Broad Street and Fairmount Avenue. According to attorneys representing Jones's father, officers assigned to the Philadelphia Police Department's ATV and dirt-bike detail spotted the group and began pursuing them. Riding ATVs and dirt bikes on Philadelphia public streets is prohibited, but no violent felony or weapons offense was alleged as the reason officers began following Jones.
Police followed Jones north on Broad Street toward West Thompson Street. Surveillance footage obtained by the family's attorneys and independently viewed by The Philadelphia Inquirer shows a substantial police contingent following Jones. At least eight police officers riding dirt bikes, along with a police patrol vehicle and a tow vehicle, were visible behind him.
At approximately 9:23 p.m., surveillance footage showed Jones cutting through a Sunoco gas station and entering West Thompson Street. Jones then drove the ATV in the wrong direction on the one-way street and went through a red traffic light. Police dirt-bike officers were visible close behind him. Seconds later, Jones's ATV crashed into the driver's side of a Toyota sedan being operated by an Uber driver as the car turned onto 15th Street.
Jones suffered critical injuries and was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Philadelphia police's initial public account of Jones's death did not disclose that officers had been following him before the collision. The department has not publicly acknowledged whether it considers the officers' actions a formal police pursuit. The surveillance evidence subsequently obtained by the family's attorneys, however, shows multiple officers and police vehicles following Jones immediately before the crash.
The circumstances raise significant questions under Philadelphia Police Department Directive 9.4. Department policy permits vehicular pursuits only under limited circumstances, including situations involving imminent danger to others, flight following a violent felony, or possession of a deadly weapon used in a crime. The conduct that allegedly prompted officers to follow Jones — illegally riding an ATV on city streets and performing wheelies — does not itself fall within those enumerated categories.
The Philadelphia Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the incident. Police spokesperson Sgt. Eric Gripp declined to provide additional information about whether the department determined that officers were engaged in a pursuit or whether officers violated department policy.
Jones's father, Sterling Lamont Jones Sr., retained attorneys Thomas Kline and other lawyers from Kline & Specter and Hill & Associates to investigate his son's death. In July 2026, the attorneys filed a notice of intent to sue the City of Philadelphia, alleging that police violated Jones's constitutional rights and department pursuit policy and that the pursuit caused his fatal injuries.
Jones's father said he learned details about the police pursuit only after his son's death and wants the officers responsible held accountable. Jones was a graduate of Hunting Park Christian Academy and had worked for approximately two years as a delivery driver for the U.S. Postal Service. His father said Jones purchased the ATV with money he earned from that job.
The officers involved in following Jones have not been publicly identified.

Curtis J. Miller
Age :66
Gender :Male
Race : White
Date : 05/08/2026
Location : 400 block of Monmouth Street
City : Good Hope
County : McDonough
State : Illinois
Agency : McDonough County Sheriff's Office; Illinois State Police
Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Suicide
Event : Suicide under police duress during SWAT barricade
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
NARRATIVE:
On 05/08/2026, 66-year-old Curtis J. Miller died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a SWAT barricade and house fire in the 400 block of Monmouth Street in Good Hope, Illinois.
.
McDonough County sheriff's deputies responded to the residence for a reported domestic disturbance. When deputies arrived, they encountered a severely injured woman who had escaped from the house. Miller went back inside the residence and barricaded himself.
.
The McDonough County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Illinois State Police. ISP Troop 4 personnel responded along with investigators from the Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 4, the Illinois State Police SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Team.
.
Police established a perimeter around the residence while attempting to communicate with Miller. At approximately 10:44 a.m., officers observed smoke coming from the house as the barricade continued.
.
Initial reporting created confusion over whether tear gas deployed by police had ignited the fire. McDonough County Sheriff Nick Petitgout subsequently said that account was incorrect and that investigators determined Miller had started the fire himself. At least one news organization corrected its original reporting to reflect the sheriff's account.
.
The fire continued while police maintained the perimeter. After conditions allowed entry, Illinois State Police SWAT personnel entered the residence and found Miller dead inside.
.
McDonough County Coroner Eric Jameson subsequently identified the dead man as Curtis J. Miller, 66. Jameson determined that Miller died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Although the residence was burning during the police standoff, the fire was not determined to be Miller's cause of death.
.
The circumstances place Miller's death during an active police barricade involving sheriff's deputies, Illinois State Police SWAT personnel and crisis negotiators. His death is therefore classified as suicide under police duress during a SWAT barricade, with the deliberately set house fire documented as part of the encounter rather than as the fatal mechanism.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The individual McDonough County sheriff's deputies, Illinois State Police SWAT personnel and crisis negotiators involved in the barricade have not been publicly identified in the sources located. McDonough County Sheriff Nick Petitgout publicly addressed the incident and disputed early reporting that police tear gas had caused the house fire.
