On March 16, 2025, at approximately 10:06 p.m., Alaska State Troopers received a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance involving a weapon at a residence in the Settlers Bay area of Wasilla. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Brett George, allegedly threatened two adult family members with a weapon. As law enforcement officers from the Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, and Wasilla Police Department responded, the family members were able to escape the residence and leave the area. George then donned body armor and an assault rifle, and left the residence in a vehicle. A Wasilla police officer initiated a traffic stop on George's vehicle a short distance away, but George fled, leading to a pursuit. At the intersection of Knik Goose Bay Road and Settlers Bay Drive, George exited his vehicle and fired the assault rifle at the marked Wasilla police car. The Wasilla police officer returned fire, striking George, who was declared deceased at the scene. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation has assumed case responsibility, and the incident will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.

On 02/21/2025, at approximately 5:07 AM, Anchorage Police Department officers responded to a report of a barricaded individual in a hotel room on the 4300 block of Credit Union Drive in Anchorage, Alaska. The individual allegedly fired at officers during the standoff. SWAT team members eventually entered the room and fatally shot the man.

On February 4, 2025, at approximately 1:17 p.m., Anchorage Police Department officers responded to multiple reports of a man, identified as 33-year-old Francis Rochon, brandishing a firearm near the intersection of Tudor Road and Piper Street in Anchorage, Alaska. Witnesses reported Rochon pointing a black pistol at a school bus in an attempt to stop it and walking in the middle of the street. Upon arrival, officers observed Rochon walking westbound toward Folker Street. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon and raise his hands, Rochon reached into his waistband and grabbed the firearm. Video evidence indicated muzzle smoke was visible as the weapon was raised. In response, an officer fired, striking Rochon, who fell to the ground. Officers administered life-saving measures until medics arrived. The Homicide Unit and Major Crime Investigation Team are conducting an ongoing investigation.

On 01/23/2025, Alaska State Troopers responded to reports of a man yelling and discharging a firearm near Crooked Creek Road in Kasilof, Alaska. On December 25, 2024, at approximately 5:25 a.m., Juneau Police Department officers responded to reports of a woman threatening individuals with a hammer in the parking lot of the Mendenhall Valley Breeze-In convenience store.

Upon arrival, officers encountered 30-year-old Ashley Rae Johnston with an object alternately described as a hammer or a hatchet. An officer fired a taser. Police claim that she moved toward the officers and an officer opened fire, killing her.

Johnston had a history of mental health struggles, substance use issues, and periods of housing insecurity. Her mother, Terri Nierstheimer, revealed that Ashley had been living "in a very dark place" since 2011, following the deaths of close family members. She first experienced homelessness at the age of 12 and had been living on the streets much of her life since then.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident, and the findings will be reviewed by the State of Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.

On 10/25/2024, a fire broke out in the detention area of the Mountain Village Jail, located in Mountain Village, Alaska. At the time of the fire, Lawrence Chiklak, a 39-year-old Native Alaskan male, was being held at the jail on a mental health hold. Chiklak had celebrated his 39th birthday just the day before. During the incident, another resident of the jail was successfully evacuated, but Chiklak died in the fire. The Mountain Village Police Department responded to the emergency, and investigations into the cause of the fire are underway. Afuvai’s family expressed confusion, noting that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia but had never shown violent behavior before. The incident was the second fatal officer-involved shooting of a Samoan Native in Anchorage within six weeks.

On June 19, 2024, officers responded to a report of a woman, Lisa Fordyce-Blair, in a mental health crisis, allegedly threatening a neighbor with a rifle. Following the initial call, officers arrived and attempted to deescalate the situation over the next several hours. Fairbanks police were called to a domestic violence situation on Turner Street and found 31-year-old Timothy McArdle agitated and throwing things out of the window. According to Alaska State Police, a traffic stop was attempted and the truck failed to stop for marked trooper vehicles and police escalated a chase, during which time Grimes allegedly shot at troopers. Troopers were joined by officers from other agencies assigned to a trooper-led narcotics team and an unknown number of officers from both agencies opened fire and killed Michael Grimes.

A man with a rifle allegedly tried to break into a hotel room. Alaska State Police arrived and shot and killed him. He was identified as Timothy Thomas, age 21. His family stated that the same trooper had previously twice arrested Thomas. Police state that the same trooper was present when Thomas' father died from suicide under police duress during a standoff. This is denied by police.

According to family, he had purchased a gun legally and had walked back to the hotel where he was staying. He did not break into any rooms but instead tried to enter a room that he had rented with his cousins who were asleep. Robert Nash, 40, of Point Hope, had reportedly been shooting a rifle at people and buildings in the city.A North Slope Borough police officer responded to Point Hope and found Nash outside of the town, still armed with a rifle. Mark Christopher Cook Jr., 27, was remanded in Hoonah on misdemeanor charges in early April 2023 while awaiting back surgery. Due to severe back pain, he was transferred to Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau for medical care. Instead of receiving the necessary treatment, Cook was placed in solitary confinement. On April 23, 2023, he was found unresponsive in his cell and later died. Cook, a Tlingit and adopted into the Haida nation, held the name GuudGiwi, Baby Eagle, Stastass clan.

Police allege that they were driving down the street and recognized a man who had outstanding warrants. Carl Robert Aahanaq Ravenscroft drowned after being chased into a water-filled gravel pit by Fairbanks officers.
A Fairbanks officer believed 34-year-old Carl Ravenscroft had been drinking or using drugs and tried to traffic-stop him. He drove away when police tried to stop him. Police escalated a chase and he drove onto the end of a road into a steep gravel pit and his car was submerged in deep water. Police allege that he got out of the vehicle but went under the water’s surface as he tried to swim to the shore.He drowned.

Marcus Gillion, 48, was arrested on September 19, 2022, on a misdemeanor assault charge and held at the Anchorage Correctional Complex. After seven days in custody, he was transported to Alaska Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on September 26, 2022. The Alaska Department of Corrections has not publicly disclosed the cause of death. Gillion's death marked the 14th in the state's prison system in 2022.

Lewey Matoomealook, 37, was taken into custody by the Alaska Department of Corrections and had been incarcerated for 13 days when he was transported to Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage on September 22, 2022. He was pronounced dead at the hospital on September 25, 2022. Matoomealook's death marked the 13th in the state's prison system in 2022. He had been in custody for 10 days on charges including trespassing and removing his ankle monitor. Following his death, the ACLU of Alaska and the law firm Friedman Rubin filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Sheriff's Office on behalf of Rider's family, alleging inadequate mental health care during his incarceration. James Rider, 31, was incarcerated at the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility in Palmer, Alaska, beginning on August 30, 2022, facing charges including trespassing and removing his ankle monitor. During his detention, Rider expressed feelings of hopelessness and was placed on suicide precautions, which involved being housed in a padded cell and wearing an anti-suicide smock. He was transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
