The man inside, identified as 61-year-old Michael Richard Shanteau, was wanted in connection with the armed robbery of a marijuana dispensary on August 25. Deputies alleged that Shanteau fired multiple shots at them through a closed door when they approached. After a three-hour standoff, during which surrounding homes were evacuated, SWAT officers alleged that Shanteau fired a shotgun at them. Police opened fire and shot him dead inside the home.

On 07/09/2025 at approximately 8:00 a.m., officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed robbery in progress at a Family Dollar store near the intersection of Soutel Drive and Norfolk Boulevard in Northwest Jacksonville. The man, later identified as 20-year-old Jamari Rashaud Akins, allegedly brandished a firearm inside the store and fled on foot with stolen cash before officers arrived.
Officer Luis Mercado III arrived at the scene and began pursuing Akins on foot. During the chase, Akins allegedly turned and fired two rounds at the pursuing officer, striking Officer Mercado in the leg. Officer Mercado returned fire, striking Akins at least once.
Both Akins and Officer Mercado were transported to local hospitals. Akins was later pronounced dead from gunshot wounds. Officer Mercado underwent surgery for his leg wound and is expected to recover.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office publicly released Officer Mercado’s name and confirmed that body camera footage of the incident exists, though it has not yet been made public pending the outcome of the investigation. Officials have not disclosed whether Akins had any prior criminal record.
The shooting occurred in a residential and commercial corridor, prompting lockdowns at nearby businesses and schools. The investigation is being conducted by the JSO Homicide Unit in coordination with the State Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Division, which will determine whether the use of deadly force complied with department policy.

On 07/06/2025 at approximately 9:30 p.m., deputies with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a stabbing at a home on Derbyshire Road in Daytona Beach. Deputies and assisting officers found two males who had been stabbed inside. An individual allegedly charged at deputies from a bedroom while screaming and holding a large knife. Deputies and officers opened fire, shooting and killing the person at the scene. The two stabbing victims, a 16-year-old boy and a 39-year-old man, were hospitalized and are expected to recover. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.

An off-duty Escambia County deputy, returning home from an off-duty job, was driving an unmarked patrol car on SR-292 in Perdido Key around 3 a.m. when he struck and killed two pedestrians attempting to cross the street near River Road. The victims, 20-year-old Nicole Grace Moore and her friend Jackson Cunningham, were both residents of Pelham, Alabama. The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. Charles Samuel Urbach, 37, died on 06/29/2025 after being taken into custody by Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officers for allegedly prowling and attempting to enter an occupied home. Police used a K-9 to locate Urbach hiding near a pond and took him into custody. Officers claim he became combative and elbowed one officer during a search, leading them to use "minimal force" to secure him in a patrol car. Urbach became unresponsive in the vehicle, and EMS was called. He was administered two doses of Narcan and later died at the hospital. The incident is under investigation.

On 06/28/2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Jyuno Alexander Daniels, 32, was found dead near train tracks in the 1300 block of Northwest 17th Avenue in Delray Beach, Florida. Daniels was wanted for a double homicide that occurred on 06/23/2025 in Boynton Beach, where a couple was shot and killed. Law enforcement officers from the Boynton Beach Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service located Daniels, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before he could be taken into custody.

Clay County deputies sought to arrest Dajshon Travis Asbell on multiple outstanding warrants. Officers found Asbell with another person, who allegedly fled with him into a building where they barricaded themselves. The second person later exited, but Asbell remained. Police deployed tear gas and breached the building using a tactical vehicle. Asbell allegedly exited holding an edged weapon and moved toward officers. Asbell died three days later from gunshot wounds.

On June 19, 2025 just before 3 p.m., Escambia County deputies received a tip that a man with warrants was working inside the Arby’s on US 98. Deputies located Daniel Lewis Hayes, 37, in the dining area. He fled behind the counter when they approached. Two deputies pursued him; Hayes knocked one deputy down. He then retrieved a knife and confronted three deputies who closed in on him. All three deputies opened fire, striking and killing Hayes in the parking lot. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent investigation. Hayes was an Arby’s employee for about 12 years, described by family as humble, smiling, and generous.

On June 18, 2025, deputies tracked a black Toyota via license-plate reader after Raymond Benedetti’s mother reported it stolen. Deputies located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on 38th Place. Benedetti exited the car, raised his hands, then allegedly "reached into his waistband." One deputy fired one round as Benedetti "made a motion." Both deputies then opened fire, striking Benedetti multiple times. Benedetti was taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital and died there. The passenger, who remained inside the vehicle, was not injured. Benedetti had been unarmed and there is no indication so far that he had been a threat to police. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent criminal investigation. Miami‑Dade Fire Rescue pronounced Laboy dead. Laboy’s family told WSVN he called his father, panicked and fearing for his life, saying “come save me, I’m being chased, and I don’t know by whom." This detail is a major source of family criticism, as they claim Laboy was scared and confused, not realizing they were police, and that he called his father panicking before he was shot. Deputy Cox was placed on administrative leave. This was the third fatal shooting by Deputy Cox. Laboy’s family is calling for transparency, questioning whether Cox identified himself before shooting.
