On May 6, 2025, a New Mexico State Police officer attempted a traffic stop in Truth or Consequences near North Date Street for a man believed to have an outstanding warrant. The man drove away from the stop, and the officer pursued him to High Winds Road near State Highway 181. Police said the man exited the vehicle and an exchange of gunfire occurred. The officer opened fire and killed him. The New Mexico State Police is investigating the shooting and have not released the man’s name.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released. On April 10, 2025, Rio Arriba County deputies and Ohkay Owingeh police responded to a reported theft on State Road 75 in Dixon, New Mexico. Officers were told items had been taken from a home, including a firearm. Police located the vehicle in Española, where it stopped outside Lowe’s. Zachary Sisneros exited the vehicle armed with a rifle. Officers opened fire and killed him in the Lowe’s parking lot on North Riverside Drive.

On March 5, 2025, Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) shot and killed someone near the intersection of Tramway Boulevard NE and Live Oak Place NE in Albuquerque, New Mexico. On February 23, 2025, Albuquerque Police Department officers responded to a domestic violence call at a residence in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Upon arrival, they encountered Benjamin Raymond, an Aryan Brotherhood member and convicted federal felon, in the driveway. Raymond became combative, and when officers attempted to arrest him, he tried to flee. A physical struggle ensued, during which officers wrestled with Raymond, who was armed with a handgun. During the altercation, officers discharged their firearms, fatally wounding Raymond. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is under investigation by local authorities.

On 02/11/2025, Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputies located 32-year-old Max Justin Marlatt, who was wanted on pedophilia charges out of Michigan, in the parking lot of a Walmart at 301 San Mateo Blvd SE. Deputies attempted to take Marlatt into custody when they shot and killed him. The Sheriff's Office has not released further details about what led to the use of deadly force.

On 02/11/2025, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Officer Jonah Hernandez of the Las Cruces Police Department responded to a trespassing call in the 300 block of South Valley Drive near Amador Avenue in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Upon arrival, Officer Hernandez encountered Armando Silva. During the encounter, Silva attacked Officer Hernandez with a knife, stabbing him multiple times. Officers on scene opened fire, killing Silva. Officer Hernandez died from his injuries. The New Mexico State Police is conducting an independent investigation.

On January 22, 2025, at approximately 9:50 a.m., a Roswell Police Department officer was responding with lights and sirens to a call about a crash with multiple injuries. The officer was traveling southbound on North Main Street when Howard Peterson, driving an Oldsmobile northbound, attempted to make a left turn across two southbound lanes. The police vehicle collided with Peterson's car. Both Peterson and the officer were transported to a local hospital, where Peterson was pronounced dead. The officer sustained injuries but is expected to recover. The incident is under investigation to determine if departmental policies and procedures were followed.

On 01/22/2025, Gallup Police officers responded to an armed disturbance near Zecca Drive and Mark Avenue in Gallup, New Mexico. Frankie Davis, 34, was reported to be armed with a shotgun and pointing it at himself. Police arrived and encountered Davis, who allegedly pointed the weapon in their direction. Officers opened fire, and Davis died from gunshot wounds. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been disclosed.

On 01/06/2025, Jesus Rubio, 28, was stopped by New Mexico State Police officers in Hobbs, New Mexico, at 209 Marland Street. Police allege that Rubio walked toward the officers and raised his arm "as if pointing a firearm." Officers opened fire, killing Rubio. No firearm was recovered at the scene, and Rubio was later determined to be unarmed. NMSP is conducting an internal self-investigation.

On 01/02/2025, Raymond Mills, a 41-year-old inmate at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was found unconscious at approximately 8:15 a.m. Medical staff attempted to revive him for 45 minutes before he was pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed that Mills died from acute methamphetamine toxicity after a concealed bag of drugs ruptured inside his body.

On November 18, 2024, Roswell Police responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Oak Drive in West Roswell. Upon arrival, officers encountered Timothy Riley, 30, who allegedly opened fire on the responding officers. In response, police returned fire, striking Riley once in the head. He was transported to a hospital but was later pronounced dead from his gunshot injury.

On October 18, 2024, Albuquerque Police officers shot and killed Matthew Garcia while he was handcuffed in the back of a police vehicle. The shooting took place during a code enforcement operation at the Tewa Motor Lodge. Garcia, who had concealed his identity, was discovered to have a firearm in his possession. Officers attempted to wrestle the firearm from him, resulting in shots being fired. Valencia deputies were called to the 100 block of Ladera Road in Los Lunas for a man arguing with neighbors and firing a gun. The officers were not able to resolve this and returned multiple times. During their last visit, they saw the quarrelsome man point guns at his neighbor, Michael Gabaldon who was allegedly defending himself on his property. Police shot and killed Gabaldon, stating he had a gun. Neighbors and his family in unison said that Gabaldon had been a “very good” person and the other neighbor was constantly threatening everyone in the neighborhood. Police were reportedly aware of this because there had allegedly been a number of similar previous incident involving this neighbor. Michael Gabaldon had been a former sheriff's deputy.

On June 25, 2024, Otero County Sheriff's Deputy Jacob Diaz-Austin responded to a welfare check regarding a male subject walking on the median of U.S. Highway 70 near mile marker 240. The individual, identified as 17-year-old Elijah Hadley, was carrying an object that appeared to be a firearm, later determined to be an airsoft pistol. Body camera footage reveals that upon the deputy's arrival, Hadley discarded the airsoft pistol. Despite this, Deputy Diaz-Austin fired multiple shots, striking Hadley.

On January 13, 2025, Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman filed first and second-degree murder charges against Deputy Jacob Diaz-Austin for the shooting death of Elijah Hadley. Following the filing of charges, the Otero County Sheriff's Office placed Deputy Diaz-Austin on administrative leave.

Police spotted a stolen vehicle and escalated a chase, placed spike strips that caused a man and woman to flee from the vehicle and continue in a truck. Police chased them to 98th and I-40 where the man held the woman hostage. After a one-hour standoff, a police sniper killed him. It turned out that the gun was only a BB gun and Meador had been unarmed.
