Tyre Nichols, 29, was pulled over for “reckless driving”, was severely beaten by seven Memphis special ops SCORPION officers and died in the hospital days later. On 12/06/2022, the Greeneville Police Department attempted to serve an arrest warrant on a suspect in a child rape investigation at a residence on Bradley Avenue in Greeneville. On 11/18/2022, the Memphis Police Department responded to a barricade situation at a home on Heartland Lane in Southwest Memphis. Officers arrived at the residence around 3 p.m. after reports of a man barricading himself inside with family members. While negotiators were on site for several hours, members of the suspect’s family were safely released, including his young daughter. In the evening, a SWAT team entered the home and found the man and his father deceased. Police confirmed that the man had shot himself during the standoff. On 09/06/2022, Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies initiated a traffic stop in Lawrenceburg around 8:00 p.m. involving 32-year-old Zackery James Cadeau. Deputies determined Cadeau had a gun and ordered him to exit the vehicle. He drove away, beginning a pursuit that covered approximately five miles. During an attempt to remove him from the vehicle, Cadeau accelerated again and made slight contact with a deputy, who was not seriously injured. After the pursuit ended, deputies exited their vehicles and ordered Cadeau to surrender. Body camera footage captured Cadeau holding a handgun to his head while deputies pleaded with him to put the gun down. Cadeau fired the weapon at himself. Deputies immediately called for medical assistance and began CPR. He was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. Reporting indicates deputies did not discharge their firearms during the incident. Cadeau had previously been sentenced in Michigan in 2009 on a home invasion conviction and was paroled in May 2022.

On 06/16/2022, Metropolitan Nashville Police Department officers assisted the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office with an effort to take Calvin Courter into custody at a home near Annex Avenue and Robertson Avenue in the Nations area of Nashville. Police said Courter had outstanding warrants from Wilson County tied to a domestic related aggravated kidnapping and assault case. Officers surrounded the home and repeatedly ordered him to come out. MNPD special response team officers later entered the home and found Courter dead from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. Police said no officers fired their weapons. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation opened the investigation into the death. Matthew Reed, 27, Was chased aggressively by Bean Station Police Department (BSPD) Officer Tristan Pettiecord who observed two motorcycles traveling on Hwy. 25E at 96 mph. The officer claims that he attempted to conduct a traffic stop and the motorcycles refused to stop. The officer escalated the chase to more than 100 mph until the motorcycle crashed, and Matthew Reid died. According to police, this fatal chase was undertaken for the sole reason of failing to stop on command. Police apparently found several joints, totaling a small amount of weed and dramatized this as the only crime they could accuse him of after his death. No officer was ever held accountable for what seems like a senseless death.

Sullivan County deputies attempted to traffic-stop Timmy Lee Thurman Jr. but he kept driving. Police escalated a high-speed chase and claim that he fired a shot at them. He stopped, ran away on foot and allegedly pointed a gun again. Police shot and killed him.
