Plainclothes officers jumped 77-year-old Thomas Matias when he got on a moped at the Ala Moana Center and violently arrested him. Police allege that the moped was stolen. Matias was injured in the arrest and taken to an ER. He told his daughter that police had instructed him to say no if asked whether he wanted to be admitted for his injuries and he had complied and signed out against medical advice. His pain and his sister found him in his apartment with extreme head and rib and chest pain. He was found to have broken ribs and other substantial injuries from the attack. He died from these injuries on January 10, 2024. After seeing the coroner’s report of injuries, the investigation was changed to manslaughter against the officers.
His daughter stated that the moped he was attacked for was purchased by him and to the family’s knowledge not stolen. There is no BWC footage as the officers were plainclothes. Surveillance footage was confirmed to exist but has not been released by police.

On 12/27/2023, Pulaski County Sheriff's deputies went to a residence in Antioch, Kentucky to serve an arrest warrant on 46-year-old John Lloyd Lester. Deputies were attempting to serve a second warrant connected to charges of second-degree rape and second-degree sodomy involving a minor. As deputies approached the property, one deputy drove past the driveway and saw Lester outside before he ran into the residence. A second deputy then drove up and reported seeing Lester exit the home holding a shotgun. A gunshot rang out as deputies were present. Deputies withdrew for safety and did not fire their weapons. After securing the area, deputies approached and found Lester deceased from a self-inflicted shotgun wound. Sheriff Bobby Jones publicly confirmed that Lester turned the gun on himself. On 12/26/2023, Monroeville Police Department officers responded to a residence on Ash Lane in the Eastwood Estates subdivision after receiving reports that Thomas McMillian, 52, had fired into an occupied dwelling. Officers encountered McMillian and he fired at them before barricading himself inside the residence. A multi-hour standoff followed as additional agencies, including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, responded. McMillian later exited the residence holding a firearm and became involved in an exchange of gunfire with officers. Officers shot McMillian. He was transported to Monroeville Hospital where he died. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation opened an investigation into the shooting.
