On 12/15/2023, officers responded to a condominium on Allen Avenue after Gorham police serving court papers heard a gunshot from inside. Portland Police activated a Special Reaction Team. Authorities established a perimeter, issued a reverse 911 alert, ordered a shelter-in-place, diverted traffic, and notified schools. Officers attempted contact for several hours. Police deployed flashbang devices and sent two robots into the residence, followed by a third robot. After continued attempts to locate the subject, a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office canine was deployed. The man was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police later confirmed he had previously been taken into protective custody under Maine’s yellow flag law and had firearms seized.

The driver did not stop and deputies escalated a chase to the dead end of the 4300 block of East Vickery Avenue. Deputies reported being fired upon and returned gunfire. Police started a standoff ensued and officers eventually removed the man from the vehicle. The man was transported to a hospital with serious injuries and later died of multiple gunshot wounds. Deputies sustained minor injuries during the incident.
