Perez-Garcia drove directly at a second patrol vehicle, ramming it head-on.

On January 4, 2024, at approximately 5:15 p.m., George County Sheriff's Deputy Jeremy Malone conducted a traffic stop on U.S. Route 98 in the Rocky Creek community of George County, Mississippi.

During the stop, the driver, identified as 43-year-old Rickey Powell, allegedly shot and killed Deputy Malone. Powell then drove away. Law enforcement pursued Powell through George, Greene, and Perry counties, ending near Beaumont, Mississippi, where Powell was shot and killed by police.
