On 12/17/2023, West Virginia State Police troopers went to 117 Connell Street in Martinsburg to serve an arrest warrant for battery on 60-year-old Tobias Ganey. Troopers attempted to contact Ganey at the residence. After he refused to open the door for an extended period, troopers entered the home to serve the warrant. Ganey fired a handgun at the troopers after they entered. Trooper A.A. Bean was shot four times, and Trooper C.D. Spessert was shot once. Troopers returned fire and shot Ganey. He died at the residence. Both troopers were transported for medical treatment. The West Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting.

On December 7, 2023, at approximately 12:06 a.m., Anne Arundel County Police officers Corporal K. Schnell and Corporal E. Vasquez initiated an unauthorized high-speed pursuit of a sedan traveling at a high rate of speed with its headlights off on the Stoney Creek drawbridge in Pasadena, Maryland. The officers followed the vehicle without activating their emergency lights or sirens and did not notify dispatch or obtain authorization for the pursuit. The chase continued for over three miles, reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph. The pursuit ended when the sedan crashed into a utility pole at the intersection of Fort Smallwood Road and Bar Harbor Road. The passenger, 22-year-old Damione Gardner of Baltimore, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital. Following the incident, both officers made factual misrepresentations and material omissions about their involvement in the pursuit. A subsequent investigation by the Maryland Attorney General's Office's Independent Investigations Division led to the indictment of Corporal Schnell and Corporal Vasquez on charges of misconduct in office.

On 12/06/2023, law enforcement responded to the Hostess House motel on U.S. 70 in Newport after a 911 call about a trespasser and a shooting at the property. Officers found motel owner Satyen Naik with a gunshot wound outside a room and later learned he had died at the hospital. Authorities identified 59 year old Troy Leon Kellum as the person inside the room, where he barricaded himself and refused to surrender during an hours long standoff. Negotiators and tactical units maintained phone contact while attempting to get him to exit peacefully. When the Special Response Team entered the room after negotiations failed, Kellum shot himself with a handgun and died during the standoff. Schools in the area were placed on soft lockdown due to the prolonged police presence.
