Melissa Gardee, a 35-year-old inmate at the Yakima County Department of Corrections, was found unresponsive in her cell on March 14, 2024, at approximately 5:55 p.m. Despite immediate emergency medical care and the arrival of ambulance and fire department personnel, she was pronounced dead at 6:43 p.m. Gardee had been in custody since June 4, 2023, facing charges including Assault 2nd Degree, Assault of a Child 2nd Degree, and Domestic Violence Assault 4th Degree.
The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Yakima Police Department, is conducting an investigation into her death. An internal investigation by the Department of Corrections is also underway.

On 03/14/2024, Francisco Nunez, a 38-year-old father of eight, was reportedly involved in an incident with deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD). Nunez was in a vehicle identified by LASD as possibly stolen. Two individuals fled the vehicle, leaving behind a 14-year-old boy, who was shot in the chest and legs by LASD deputies but survived. Eyewitnesses, including the boy, reported that LASD deputies handcuffed and beat Nunez at the scene.

Five days later, Nunez was found deceased 250 feet from the location of the alleged assault, with blood in his mouth, hands, and pants, as well as visible bruises and burn marks on his body. LASD claimed Nunez had never been in custody and cited methamphetamine toxicity as the cause of death. However, the coroner disputed this, telling Nunez's family the death was consistent with injuries from a physical altercation.

The investigation was conducted internally by LASD, with deputies Rivas and Leopoldo Sanchez, known for affiliations with the LASD deputy gang "Banditos," reportedly involved. The deputies who allegedly detained and beat Nunez, Simi and Quesada, were from the Lancaster LASD station, which has faced previous allegations of misconduct.

Christon Devante Collins, a 27-year-old Black male and U.S. Army veteran, was found unresponsive in the DeKalb County Jail on March 13, 2024. Surveillance footage showed Collins stumbling in the common area before collapsing. He was moved to his cell by another person and later discovered by jail staff. Collins was transported to a hospital, where he died two days later. An autopsy determined the cause of death was a fentanyl overdose. A former inmate was later charged in connection with supplying Collins with fentanyl.

On March 12, law enforcement officers located Taylor at the Super 8 Motel on Dunn Ratcliff Road NW in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Before officers could apprehend him, Taylor released a 16-year-old girl who was with him and then shot himself. He was initially treated at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven and later transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Taylor succumbed to his injuries on March 15.

On March 12, 2024, law enforcement officers from the Santa Rosa Police Department, Petaluma Police Department, and the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office SWAT team engaged in a standoff at the Best Western motel located at 200 S. McDowell Blvd in Petaluma. The subject, identified as 55-year-old John Rector, was wanted for felony domestic violence, felony vehicle pursuit, felony arson, and being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.

Officers attempted to serve arrest and search warrants, during which Rector barricaded himself in a motel room, made threats against officers, and discharged his firearm multiple times. After hours of negotiation and the deployment of tear gas, officers heard a muffled gunshot from within the room. Upon entry, they found Rector with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries on March 15, 2024.

On March 12, 2024, at approximately 11:18 AM, 67-year-old John Drozd was crossing the 300 block of N. Tustin Street in Orange, California, when he was fatally struck by a vehicle involved in a high-speed police chase conducted by the Orange Police Department. Ripley, Ohio officer Caleb Savage chased Ryan Mitchell from Ohio into Kentucky and hunted him until he crashed. When the vehicle crashed, Mitchell died and the officer fled the scene without rendering aid. The officer resigned from the Ripley PD and has so far been indicted for charges of reckless homicide, failure to render aid and leaving the scene of an accident. Officer Caleb Savage was charged with reckless homicide.

On 03/10/2024, Des Plaines Police responded to a report of a suicidal individual barricaded in a vehicle at the intersection of Touhy Avenue and Lee Street. Officers observed 55-year-old Scott MacDonald inside the vehicle, armed with a handgun.

The deputy escalated a chase, and the 27-year-old driver, Jose Gonzalez-Gutierrez, did not stop. The chase continued on County Road 681 for approximately 3.5 miles, with speeds reaching near 100 mph. Police alleged that they "momentarily lost sight of the vehicle" and immediately came upon the Camry, which had collided off the road into a tree in the 66000 block of County Road 681 in Lawrence Township. Gonzalez-Gutierrez was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the crash site.

The individual, 53-year-old Cole Jackson Hughes, was reported by his wife to be armed with a gun and an ax. Upon arrival, deputies found Hughes in the front yard holding what appeared to be a rifle. They issued verbal commands for over 20 minutes to de-escalate the situation.

Hughes raised the weapon toward the deputies, prompting Deputy Nicholas Rocha to fire, striking Hughes. The weapon was later determined to be an unloaded pellet rifle. Hughes was transported to Kern Medical, where he died on 03/11/2024. A Critical Incident Review Board determined the use of force was within department policy. The case has been forwarded to the District Attorney's office for further review.
