On January 25, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Wichita Police Department officers initiated a vehicle pursuit near East Bayley and Schweiter Drive after locating a vehicle reportedly stolen at knifepoint earlier that evening. The driver, 43-year-old Larry K. Armour, drove until East Harry and Green Street, where he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot with officers in pursuit. He then forcibly entered a residence in the 2400 block of East Harry Street, armed with a knife, and took the male occupant hostage.

A tactical team comprising Wichita Police Department officers, Sedgwick County deputies, and police negotiators arrived at the residence just before 1 a.m. At approximately 3 a.m., a deputy observed Armour through a window standing over the hostage and threatening him with a large knife, shouting that he would kill him. The deputy fired one shot, striking Armour. Armour was transported to a local hospital, where he died.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. The findings will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for review.

One Guatemalan woman died in the crash. This fatality happened as part of an Operation Lone Star migrant hunt.

CBP Border Patrol chased a vehicle, causing a collision that killed a third party motorist. On January 24, 2024, at approximately 6:45 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a call regarding a man, 41-year-old Clifford Brooks, experiencing a mental health crisis. Brooks was initially cooperative and agreed to be transported for medical evaluation. However, during transport, Brooks became agitated and assaulted a firefighter-paramedic, fleeing the scene after pinning her against a wall.

Officers attempted to detain Brooks, but he became combative, assaulting an officer and fleeing into traffic. After crawling under a truck, he emerged holding a metal object. Despite multiple commands to drop the object, Brooks advanced toward Officer Claude Jackson, who then discharged his firearm, striking and killing him.

The shooting is under investigation by the Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team. The U.S. Attorney’s Office determined there was insufficient evidence to pursue charges against Officer Jackson, concluding that the officer acted within the scope of his duties.

On January 24, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers from the Sioux City Police Department observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed near Gordon Drive and Spalding Street. The vehicle, a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by 40-year-old Melissa Thede of Churdan, Iowa, did not stop when officers attempted a traffic stop.

Officers escalated a high-speed pursuit to speeds in excess of 100 mph. The pursuit continued into a more congested area, prompting supervisors to direct officers to stop the chase.

Immediately after the pursuit ended, Thede’s vehicle, still speeding from the chase, collided with another car at the intersection of Gordon Drive and Spalding Street. Her vehicle overturned upon impact and came to rest in the roadway. Emergency responders transported her to MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The Iowa State Patrol is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Findings will be reviewed by the Woodbury County Attorney’s Office.

On 01/24/2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., an Ada County Sheriff's deputy on patrol observed 37-year-old Jeremiah Gaver covered in a tarp and holding a cane, peering over backyard fences on South Maverick Way in Boise. When approached, Gaver refused to identify himself, explain his actions, or remove his hand from beneath the tarp. Additional deputies and Boise Police officers arrived and issued multiple warnings, stating that non-compliance would result in the use of a less-lethal beanbag round and deployment of a K9 unit.

After approximately 30 minutes, a deputy fired two beanbag rounds. A canine was then released and sicced on him. Gaver stabbed the dog and fled toward an open field. Police chased him to a gas station near the Cole and Amity intersection. Police fired Tasers at him, causing him to fall. A second canine was sent and attacked him. Gaver stabbed this dog multiple times in self-defense. Four detectives and one officer all fired at the same time, striking Gaver.

Gaver was transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m. The Ada County Coroner's Office listed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds, with the manner of death classified as homicide. The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force, led by the Meridian Police Department, is investigating the incident. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol.

Pittsburgh Police received a ShotSpotter alert that gunshots were heard and arrived in the 1900 block of Huron Street. Police heard a noisy argument and claim there were shots heard. Police shot and killed Austyn Cousins. When asked by media whether Cousins had actually fired any shots, police replied that they did not know. It is completely unclear why this young software engineer was killed in the dark night at 1:49 a.m. other than a police surveillance system sending police to the street and firing shots. On January 22, 2024, at approximately 5:46 a.m., the Eureka Police Department responded to a report of a male juvenile with a significant neck laceration. The juvenile alleged that his uncle, Daniel Martinez, 43, had assaulted him at a residence in the 1400 block of Union Street in Eureka, California. The victim was transported to a local medical facility for treatment of severe but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers learned that Martinez had barricaded himself in a second-story bedroom with additional occupants, including an adult female and three male juveniles aged 4 to 12. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were dispatched to the scene. Negotiations continued throughout the day, resulting in the safe release of all hostages by approximately 1:00 p.m.

Despite prolonged negotiations, Martinez remained non-compliant and refused to surrender. At approximately 4:58 p.m., an officer-involved shooting occurred when contact was made with Martinez. He was struck by gunfire, received immediate medical attention, and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Deputies Johnathan Waxler and Colton Ross of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Both deputies were placed on paid administrative leave, per agency protocol. The Humboldt County Critical Incident Response Team, led by the Eureka Police Department and the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office, is conducting an investigation into the incident.

On January 22, 2024, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, including SWAT units, responded to a welfare check at a residence in the 200 block of East Sims Road in Brentwood, California. Craig Goatley, 37, had barricaded himself inside a bedroom after allegedly shooting and killing 40-year-old Shara Kent. Through the door, Goatley informed officers that Kent was deceased and refused to exit the room.

Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution while SWAT negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation. The standoff lasted approximately 12 hours. After negotiations failed and a gunshot was heard from within the residence, SWAT made a forced entry into the bedroom. Officers discovered Kent deceased from a gunshot wound and Goatley suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Goatley was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The vehicle veered off the roadway to the left and struck several trees. All four occupants were killed in the crash.

On January 22, 2024, at approximately 2:39 a.m., a state trooper observed a Kia Soul traveling northbound on Interstate 95 at a speed of 104 miles per hour. The trooper attempted to catch up to the vehicle but did not initiate a traffic stop or pursuit, as the car was no longer in sight. The driver, identified as 17-year-old Alan Lee Lockamy of Archer Lodge, attempted to exit at Brogden Road (Exit 93) but lost control. The vehicle veered off the roadway and collided with several trees. The front-seat passenger, 17-year-old Freddy Seras of Clayton, was trapped in the vehicle along with the driver. On January 22, 2024, deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a mental health crisis involving 81-year-old Janet Sours at Rails End Mobile Home Park in Wildwood, Florida. Deputies arrived and engaged with Sours, alleging that she drew a knife from behind her back and moved toward a deputy. The deputy fired their weapon, striking Sours. She was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 12:48 a.m.

On January 21, 2024, at approximately 11:00 PM, officers from the Augusta Police Department and Capitol Police responded to a report of a man, 22-year-old Liban S. Mohamed, threatening residents with a firearm at 132 Northern Avenue in Augusta. Upon arrival, officers encountered Mohamed, who fired at them from a window. In response, three Augusta Police officers—Sergeant Derek Daley, Officer Matthew Gurney, Officer Andrew Frost—and Capitol Police Officer Ryan Frost returned fire. Mohamed was found deceased inside the residence with a handgun by his side. No officers were injured during the incident. The Maine Attorney General's Office conducted an investigation and determined that the officers' actions were justified.

On January 21, 2024, Gilbert Police Department officers encountered 40-year-old Brett Shanahan, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, seated in a parked car wearing a tactical vest. Shanahan, who had reportedly been struggling with PTSD, was armed and engaged in a standoff with police. Officers were called to the scene after receiving reports of a suspicious person, and after attempting to negotiate with Shanahan, the situation escalated. Police shot and killed Shanahan after the standoff. The incident is under investigation by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
