On April 29, 2024, Florida Highway Patrol attempted to stop a 23-year-old male driver for a traffic violation on Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers, Florida. The driver did not stop. Florida Highway Patrol escalated the chase at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The chase ended when the vehicle lost control on the interstate exit, struck a curb, and came to a stop. Officers found the driver deceased in the vehicle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As of December 4, 2024, the identity of the driver and the officers involved has not been released. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is currently investigating the incident.

Hughes fired shots at officers with an AR-15–style rifle. Officers opened fire, killing Hughes.

Four officers were killed, including Deputy U.S. Marshal Sam Poloche, North Carolina Department of Adult Correction officers William Alden Elliot and Thomas Weeks Jr., and CMPD officer Joshua Eyer, who later died at the hospital.

On April 27, 2024, at approximately 11:00 p.m., New Haven Police Department officers responded to a domestic battery call at 6008 Moeller Road, Lot #165, in the Cedarwood Trails mobile home park. During an attempt to arrest 37-year-old Robert A. Vicena, an altercation occurred in which Vicena attacked Sgt. Howard Lininger and Patrolman Aaron Koch with a knife, causing injuries.

Officers opened fire, fatally wounding Vicena, who was pronounced dead in his home. Sgt. Lininger and Patrolman Koch were transported to local hospitals with stable injuries.

Sgt. Lininger, Patrolman Koch, and Patrolman Braden Pope were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. A police autopsy confirmed that Vicena died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.

On April 28, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Eric Gray, a 20-year-old fast-food employee, was riding his bicycle home along North Andrews Avenue near Northwest 15th Avenue in Pompano Beach, Florida. At that time, Broward County deputies responding to reports of a street takeover at the intersection of McNab Road and Andrews Avenue chased a 2017 Mercedes C300 Coupe.

During the pursuit, the vehicle collided with a marked BSO K-9 unit. The Mercedes then lost control, rotated clockwise, slid toward the bicycle lane and sidewalk, and struck Gray. Gray was pronounced dead at the scene by Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics.

The driver of the Mercedes was arrested and charged. The Broward County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation. Police have not disclosed the names of the involved officers.

On April 27, 2024, at approximately 12:22 a.m., Deputy Shannon Conover of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office patrolled Hunt Fountain Park in Lakeland, Florida, due to recent burglary incidents. The park had closed over two hours earlier. Deputy Conover approached a white Mercedes-Benz occupied by 26-year-old Kyran Caples. Caples, dressed in all-white attire, refused to provide identification or exit the vehicle. Deputy Conover requested backup; Lt. Chad Anderson and Deputy Craig Smith arrived. As the deputies attempted to engage Caples, his vehicle began to move. When the deputies tried to stop the vehicle, Caples fired five shots, striking Lt. Anderson in the left arm, with the bullet lodging near his heart and spinal column, and hitting Deputy Smith twice in the right arm. The deputies, along with additional officers, opened fire, discharging 38 rounds and striking Caples eight times, resulting in his death at the park.

Investigations indicated that Caples had no prior criminal record. He had adopted the Moorish sovereign citizen ideology during his time at California State University, Fresno. Sovereign citizens often refuse to cooperate with police, not recognizing them as authorities whose orders they must follow.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the incident, and the deputies remain on administrative leave. No determination has been made on whether the deputies’ actions were justified.

On 04/27/2024, Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call reporting lewd and lascivious behavior near North Powerline Road in Pompano Beach, Florida. Deputy Wyatt Jennesse, 24, struck and killed Jamil Moreland, 28, on Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard. The incident occurred as Deputy Jennesse was first approaching the location of Moreland, who was in the left thru lane of the roadway. It was approximately 5:32 a.m., and low lighting conditions may have contributed to reduced visibility, as Moreland was reportedly lying or crouched in the roadway. Investigators confirmed that Moreland was the subject of the lewd behavior report. They stated that excessive speed was not a factor in the crash, and it remains unclear if Moreland was within a marked crosswalk. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

On April 26, 2024, at approximately 8:35 p.m., Long Beach Police responded to a report of a home invasion in progress at a residence on the 6800 block of Cerritos Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered 17-year-old Brandon Ramon Salgado of San Bernardino in the yard of the home. Salgado was armed with what appeared to be a firearm, which was later determined to be a replica. Officers attempted to negotiate with him for over an hour. Salgado did not comply. A SWAT team was preparing to deploy when Salgado was shot by police. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police discovered that he had a plastic replica gun and had been unarmed.

The California Department of Justice is investigating the officer-involved shooting to determine if the use of force was legally justified. The Long Beach Police Department has released body camera footage of the incident, which shows officers repeatedly asking Salgado to drop the weapon before the shooting occurred.

On April 26, 2024, Peoria police responded to a call regarding a man, later identified as Christian Avalos Gonzales, who allegedly flashed a gun at a neighbor. The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. when Gonzales reportedly fired a shot into the street before returning to his home. Upon arrival at his residence, officers encountered Gonzales in his driveway, armed with a handgun. Police instructed Gonzales to drop the weapon, but he reportedly pointed the gun at officers, resulting in a shootout. On April 25, 2024, at approximately 11:15 PM, Northport Police attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of McFarland Boulevard and Highway 43. The driver, later identified as Gilmar Tista-Morente, reportedly fired shots at the officers and fled. This prompted a multi-county police pursuit involving Northport PD, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), and Greene County officials. The vehicle crashed on Interstate 59/20 near Exit 52, where police approached the vehicle. Officers alleged that Tista-Morente was armed with a gun, but no record has been found to confirm that he fired or used the weapon in any way. Several officers opened fire, striking him multiple times. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

On the evening of April 25, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., James F. "Jim" Collins, 83, was a passenger in a Toyota Prius operating as an Uber. The vehicle was traveling through the intersection of East 49th Street and Carvel Avenue when Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers, pursuing a dark-colored Jeep believed to be involved in a prior shooting, chased the vehicle with lights and sirens activated. The Jeep collided with the Uber, causing significant damage and injuries.

Mr. Collins was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries on June 14, 2024.

On April 25, 2024, at approximately 10:31 a.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting that a 75-year-old woman had been shot multiple times in front of her garage on the 2400 block of Fern Street in Eureka. The shooter, identified as 32-year-old Kevin Jeffrey Burks, allegedly approached the victim and her sister, opened fire, and then fled westbound on Fern Street toward Walnut Avenue. Deputies arrived at the scene around 10:38 a.m. and spotted Burks walking on Fern Street. When deputies attempted to detain him at gunpoint, Burks fled into a nearby residence. At approximately 10:40 a.m. Burks exited the residence and advanced toward the deputies while pointing a firearm in their direction. Lieutenant Conan Moore discharged his firearm, striking Burks in the chest. Burks was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on May 3, 2024. The elderly victim was also hospitalized and later released to a rehabilitation facility. The incident is under investigation by the Humboldt County Critical Incident Response Team.

On April 24, 2024, at approximately 9:50 p.m., North Andover police responded to a 911 call reporting that 36-year-old Sean Robert DeAdder was armed and experiencing a mental health crisis at his residence on Waverly Road. Upon arrival, DeAdder fired at responding officers, injuring one officer with metal shards from a bullet striking a cruiser. The officer sustained minor injuries.

The Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) SWAT team was deployed to the home. DeAdder locked himself inside the home, continuing to fire from both the front and rear windows. After several hours, he was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On April 25, 2024, at approximately 3:40 p.m., Anaheim Police Department officers responded to a shooting at the Tyrol Plaza Senior Apartments on State College Boulevard. The victim, 59-year-old Ana Monterrosa, the apartment complex manager, was fatally shot multiple times by 67-year-old resident Brian Lawrence in the leasing office. After the shooting, Lawrence barricaded himself inside his third-floor apartment. In response, the APD deployed its SWAT team, evacuated surrounding residents, and initiated a standoff.

Negotiators attempted to communicate with Lawrence, but after approximately six hours, at 9:30 p.m., SWAT members breached the apartment and discovered Lawrence dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident was classified as a murder-suicide, with the motive still under investigation.

On April 25, 2024, officers from the Valparaiso Police Department and Porter County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a man displaying a handgun near Fairgrounds Park in Valparaiso, Indiana. Officers located 20-year-old Caden Joel Mura near the Butterfield Pavilion.

When approached, Mura fled on foot toward Calumet Avenue. During the pursuit, Mura allegedly fired at the officers, who returned fire. The chase continued to a residence on Valparaiso Street, where Mura reportedly raised his handgun at officers. Officers then opened fire, incapacitating him.

Officers administered first aid until paramedics arrived. Mura was transported to Northwest Health Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

.All officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The Indiana State Police, with assistance from the Porter County Coroner’s Office, is conducting an investigation into the incident.

On April 24, 2024, at approximately 5:55 p.m., Orlando Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Orange Avenue and South Lucerne Circle in Orlando, Florida. The driver, 29-year-old Michael David Dennis, was wanted on warrants for attempted murder and aggravated stalking. As officers approached, Dennis fired a handgun at them. An officer fired shots, fatally wounding Dennis.

Arlington PD received a call about a stabbing in which Michael Bassey identified himself as "Michelangelo" and said he had stabbed someone named Michael because Michael talked too much. Police arrived and saw Bassey with a knife running from an apartment, shot and tased him several times and found him to be dead from an abdominal gunshot wound when they handcuffed him. There had been no stabbing victim and the man apparently was suffering a mental health episode and made various nonsensical statements including about a stabbing which had not happened.

On April 25, 2024, at approximately 9:30 a.m., deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a man threatening people with firearms near the intersection of Hypoluxo Road and Military Trail in Lake Worth, Florida. Witnesses reported that 38-year-old Benoit Pasteur was pushing a shopping cart containing guns and a gas container and had allegedly to carjack a woman with a child in her vehicle.

On 04/24/2024, law enforcement from the Turtle Mountain Tribal Police engaged in a vehicle pursuit on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in Rolette County. Russell Charette was a passenger in the vehicle being pursued. According to a federal lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court under the Federal Tort Claims Act, Charette exited or fell from the moving vehicle during the chase and came to rest on or near the roadway. The lawsuit alleges that the tribal police officer continued the pursuit with severely limited visibility due to a dust cloud on the gravel road and drove a patrol vehicle directly into the area where Charette was located, striking him. Charette was transported to Quentin N. Burdick Memorial Health Care Facility in Belcourt, where he later died from his injuries. The complaint argues that the officer violated Bureau of Indian Affairs pursuit policy by continuing the chase under conditions that posed excessive risk to public safety. The family is seeking damages related to the death.

On 04/24/2024, Trent A. Paschal, a 24-year-old male, was found deceased from a gunshot wound at the East Dubuque Boat Ramp on Boat Ramp Rd in East Dubuque, Illinois. Paschal reportedly died from suicide under police duress while inside his vehicle.

According to open records, Paschal had been under investigation for a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl while serving as a middle school teacher. Law enforcement had been actively investigating the allegations prior to his death. On April 24, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Urbandale Police Department responded to a report of a domestic dispute at a residence in the 3700 block of 150th Street. Upon attempting to make contact, officers heard gunfire from within the residence, prompting them to establish a secure perimeter and evacuate nearby homes for public safety.

The Urbandale Police Department's SWAT team was deployed, and crisis negotiators attempted to communicate with the individual, who was reportedly armed and had barricaded himself inside. Negotiations extended for several hours, during which officers used a drone to survey the interior of the home.

Despite these efforts, the man reportedly raised a firearm and fired a single shot, resulting in his death from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. SWAT officers did not discharge their weapons during the standoff.
