On January 22, 2026, officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots inside an apartment at 2500 Johnson Avenue in the Spuyten Duyvil section of the Bronx. Responding officers discovered 59-year-old Maria Garcia with a fatal gunshot wound in a bedroom. Nearby, a 55-year-old man, identified as her sibling and a retired Port Authority Police Department officer, was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An 86-year-old woman, believed to be their mother, was also found with a gunshot wound and transported to a hospital in critical but stable condition. Police recovered two firearms inside the apartment. The incident is being investigated by NYPD detectives and the New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation under laws governing incidents involving current or former law enforcement officers.

While driving a patrol SUV, the deputy struck a vehicle driven by Robert Cydear as he pulled out from a parking lot. The impact caused severe injuries, and Cydear later died.
