Several teens had been partying at an aunt’s house in Springfield until around 2 a.m, celebrating their mother’s 37th birthday. Byrd’s mother told them to take her Lexus SUV and bring Da’Vant home to Holyoke. All but Byrd had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana prior to the crash.

A Chicopee PD officer had tried to stop the car and began chasing it instead when it did not stop. The car was chased into a dangerous curve, crashed into a house that was soon engulfed in flames. Byrd had been in the backseat, was thrown forward and initially survived the crash but was unable to get out and died in the flames.The homeowner had been sleeping on his couch that night when the car came hurtling through a wall at an estimated 86 mph. The homeowner also remained in the ICU and suffered multiple internal and traumatic brain injuries as he had become trapped under the car and rubble inside of his home.
