Kansas City Police Department and Missouri Highway Patrol saw a vehicle that they wanted to stop and question in connection with a prior homicide. The car did not stop and police escalated a chase, used spike strips and chased the man on foot when he stopped. Police claim that he fired at them. They shot and killed him.

St. Louis County Police Department chased a vehicle they felt to be stolen until the vehicle crashed into a family’s car, ejecting Jace Richardson and his mother. The toddler died.

St. Louis Metro PD recognized Ralph Jones as someone who was known to carry a gun. It is unclear why police approached him but during an unknown encounter, they claim that he pointed the gun. They shot and killed him.

Independence PD responded to a white vehicle causing a disturbance and its occupants banging on residence doors. The vehicle fled when police arrived. Police escalated a chase and allege that they saw a gun and opened fire, killing Tyrea Pryor.

Ozark police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop “for impaired driving and multiple traffic violations.” The driver headed west from MO Highway 14 and N. 22nd Street, took off at a high rate of speed with police escalating a chase. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle after failing to negotiate a curve on MO Highway 14 near 32nd Street. The driver went off the roadway, struck a utility pole and died. He had been a juvenile.

Springfield PD arrived at a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex near the 1000 block of E. McDaniel Street where a woman and children were in an apartment with a man who allegedly had a gun. Several officers forced their way into the apartment and in a confrontation, they shot and killed Mitchell Hooe. Police did not reply whether the man had used his gun or what prompted the officers to kill him.

St. Louis Metro PD received a call about a “suspicious car” and felt the car was linked to a prior crime. Police escalated a chase and he lost control and crashed. The driver and 3 other people ran from the vehicle and one of the people engaged in an exchange of shots with police. Equan Hopson was shot dead and 2 officers were reportedly injured.

Missouri Highway Patrol received a call about a sexual assault. Police arrived and reportedly found Ronnie Dale Walker with a knife. They engaged in an altercation with him and shot and killed him. Police state that the rape victim had been a 16-year-old female and a second young female as well and that Walker had served time until 2020 as a Tier 3 Level offender on the Sex Offender Registry, the most serious sexual predator. Walker had been imprisoned most of his life since age 24.

Christopher Jones had reportedly gone out with friends in a St. Louis suburb where he stayed up through the night talking. The2 boys had fallen asleep in the car and were awakened to St. Charles County PD loudly banging on the car window. Startled, Jones reversed and bumped into a police car. Police fired an unknown number of shots into the vehicle, killing him. Police allege that a handgun was seen in the car but did not state that it had been used. Police further claimed later that the car had been stolen.

Springfield PD responded to a check-person call and found Tymel Bowman. Police arrested him for an outstanding warrant. Police allege he immediately resisted when officers attempted to place him in handcuffs. An officer tasered him. Bowman escaped and officers started a foot chase, caught up to him and continued to struggle with him, alleging that he attempted to pull a knife from his waistband. Additional officers arrived on the scene before he arrested was taken into custody. While on the way to the hospital, police say Bowman stopped breathing and died. Police did not release autopsy results or BWC footage when announcing the death and none can be found on open records search.

On 08/13/2021, Springfield officers responded to reports of a shooting in northwest Springfield. Police arrived and found a man who had been shot. He was transported for medical care and died from his injuries. Officers searched the surrounding area for the person responsible.

On 08/07/2021, St. Louis police attempted to stop a vehicle connected to an earlier shooting call. The driver refused to stop and police escalated a chase at very high speed through north St. Louis. No PIT maneuvers were reported. The fleeing vehicle crashed near North Broadway and East Taylor Avenue. One person died at the scene and multiple others were hospitalized.

On July 3, 2021, Jasper County deputies escalated a pursuit that ended in a fatal three-vehicle crash at the intersection of County Road 80 and County Road 100 when they chased a man who was reportedly driving while intoxicated. During the chase, his vehicle collided with other cars, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to others. The driver survived and was charged with DWI resulting in death and multiple other offenses.

On July 3, 2021, 66-year-old Robert D. McDermid of Joplin was a bystander killed during a police pursuit initiated by the Duquesne Police Department. Officers responded to a report of a male driver passed out in a vehicle blocking a driveway in the 800 block of South Rex Avenue. Upon arrival, they found the driver showing signs of intoxication. He drove away northbound on Rex Avenue. A Duquesne Police Department officer observed the vehicle and initiated a pursuit eastbound on 7th Street. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle collided with two other vehicles at the intersection of 7th Street and Duquesne Road. McDermid, the driver of one of the vehicles, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is conducting the crash investigation, while the Joplin Police Department is handling the criminal investigation.

On June 4, 2021, 73-year-old bystander Patsy S. Arnold of Smithville, Missouri, was killed during a police pursuit initiated by Lone Jack Police Department. Officers were pursuing a stolen 1999 Ford Ranger. During the chase, the vehicle crossed the median on U.S. 50 near Milton Thompson Road and crashed into Arnold's 2020 Ford Escape and another vehicle. Arnold was transported to Research Medical Center and pronounced dead.

On March 29, 2021, Springfield Police Department officers responded to a reported shooting at the Bass Pro call center on East Kearney Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 33-year-old Troy Rapp deceased from gunshot wounds. Witnesses identified 28-year-old Joshua A. Anderson as the shooter. Anderson fled the scene, leading to a police pursuit that ended when Anderson crashed his vehicle near Glenstone Avenue and Kearney Street. Officers found Anderson with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries on April 1, 2021.
The Springfield Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and subsequent pursuit.

On February 19, 2021, a Livingston County sheriff’s deputy responded to a crash on U.S. Highway 36 near Chillicothe. The deputy placed 34-year-old Timothy David Frandson in the patrol car; inside, Frandson allegedly struck the deputy with the radio microphone. The deputy opened fire, and Frandson died at the scene. The Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated; prosecutors later announced no charges.

In Kansas City, Missouri, an officer attempted a traffic stop near Gardner Avenue and North Chouteau Trafficway. The driver, Brandy Granados, accelerated away and police initiated a pursuit. Minutes later at Front Street and North Chouteau Trafficway, the car reportedly ran a red light and collided with a tractor-trailer. Granados was pronounced dead at the scene.

On 01/20/2021, 33-year-old Michael Hayes died following a police pursuit in St. Louis, Missouri. Officers attempted to stop a vehicle they believed to be stolen. The driver fled at high speed. Officers escalated a chase during which the fleeing Infiniti collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Chambers Road and Crete Drive. Michael Hayes, a passenger in the struck vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
