On April 6, 2024, at approximately 3:30 a.m., an altercation occurred at the Martini Bar located at 3450 NW 83rd Avenue in Doral, Florida. Security guard George Alejandro Castellanos, 23, intervened, at which point 37-year-old patron Jamal Wayne Wood allegedly drew a firearm and fatally shot Castellanos.

Doral Police Department officers, already present in the vicinity, responded immediately. Upon arrival, they encountered Wood, who was still armed. Officers engaged Wood in a shootout; Wood was shot and killed by police. One officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and applied a tourniquet himself; he was reported to be in stable condition.

On April 6, 2024, at approximately 8:45 p.m., Cedar Rapids Police Department officers responded to reports of a man with a gun near 31st Street NE in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

According to police accounts, Vanderhamm allegedly raised the firearm in the direction of officers, and officers opened fire. Vanderhamm was struck multiple times and was pronounced dead at the location.

At approximately 10 p.m. on April 4, 2024, Tucson Police Department (TPD) officers responded to a domestic violence call at a residence in the 7400 block of East Calle Merida. Upon arrival, officers were informed that Jacob Dryer, 27, was intoxicated and had assaulted people inside the house. Dryer had reportedly taken a knife from one of the victims and was believed to be armed with several weapons, including a shotgun. As the situation escalated, two victims were able to escape the house.

A standoff ensued, with Dryer barricading himself inside the home. The TPD attempted to negotiate with Dryer, but he refused to communicate and engaged in erratic behavior, including breaking glass and racking a shotgun. The police used less-lethal measures, including K-9s, in an attempt to subdue him. Dryer emerged from the home and appeared to be attempting to enter a vehicle before retreating back inside. Hours later, he reappeared at the door, allegedly pointing a firearm toward officers. In response, Officer Kyle Frank, a 16-year veteran of the TPD, discharged his weapon, fatally shooting Dryer.

A subsequent search of the home revealed seven firearms and several hundred rounds of ammunition. No officers or other community members were injured during the incident.

On April 2, 2024, in Port St. Lucie, Florida, retired Battle Creek, Michigan, police lieutenant Ray Felix, 60, abducted his estranged wife, Jamie Felix, 45, from a business in the 9000 block of South U.S. 1. Disguised and armed, Ray forced Jamie and their two sons, aged 10 and 17, into a rental car. He coerced Jamie to send a suspicious email to her coworkers, prompting them to alert authorities. Ray then compelled Jamie to drive her vehicle, with their 17-year-old son following in the rental car, to a Quality Inn in West Palm Beach. There, Ray shot Jamie multiple times in front of their children. He fled the scene and, when confronted by police at a nearby car rental facility, died by suicide. Oklahoma officers attempted to evict an elderly couple who fought back. Police dragged a disabled woman with Parkinson’s from the home while an elderly man was escalated into a mental health crisis under police duress, poured gasoline on himself and set himself on fire and died when officers tried to drag him out also.

On April 1, 2024, at approximately 10:52 a.m., Florence police officers attempted to serve felony warrants for rape from Utah on Bart James Barcelou. The confrontation occurred in the backyard of a residence on the 200 block of Walnut Street. Barcelou, armed with two knives, charged at officers, who first deployed a taser. The taser was unsuccessful, and police then shot and killed him. Body cam footage of the event exists but has been withheld during the investigation. The officer involved was not named, and the grand jury ultimately cleared the officer, determining that there was insufficient evidence for criminal charges.

On 04/01/2024, deputies from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office were involved in a fatal shooting on Madison Lane in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. The incident resulted in the death of 20-year-old Warren Burton.

On March 31, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers, including SWAT team members Vincent Marshall, Dustin Bland, and Maverick Bowen, were dispatched to a residence in the 3200 block of Winton Avenue following reports of an armed individual. The man, identified as 31-year-old Luis Duran-Ruano, reportedly held a firearm while standing outside the residence.

After approximately an hour, Duran-Ruano began walking away from the residence. Officers deployed less-lethal bean bag rounds, and Duran-Ruano fired a gun in response in the direction of the officers. Marshall, Bland, and Bowen returned fire, striking Duran-Ruano. He was transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team is conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting, while IMPD Internal Affairs is performing a separate administrative review. Additionally, a civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing after the criminal process concludes.

Near mile marker 304, with police still in hot pursuit, the Silverado collided with a northbound Dodge Ram driven by 33-year-old Michael Stout of Ohio. The impact caused catastrophic damage to both vehicles, killing Stout instantly. The 15-year-old driver was also fatally injured.

On March 31, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., deputies from the Rankin County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic disturbance on Walker Drive in Florence, Mississippi. Deputies encountered 33-year-old Justin Kitchen, who was reportedly threatening family members.

On March 31, 2024, Homestead Police responded to reports of gunfire at the Villas of Sunrise townhouse complex. Officers initially encountered Chong in the front doorway with his hands in a fanny pack and throwing objects at them. After disengaging, they were called back hours later at approximately 2:30 a.m. When Chong again failed to obey commands—this time allegedly approaching with a BB gun—officers opened fire. Chong was struck and died on-site. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement led the investigation after a state attorney later ruled that officer use of force was legally justified.

While investigating a fire in a home, police got into a confrontation with a person at the home. Police said he tried to walk away and they “detained him.” Leading to some altercation. Police further allege that he pulled a gun and they shot and killed him.

On March 31, 2024, at approximately 3:45 p.m., Fayetteville Police officers initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of North Glynn Street and East Stonewall Avenue after observing a vehicle with a license plate that did not correspond to the vehicle's registration. The driver did not stop. Troopers escalated a chase through Fayetteville. Before the busy McDonough Road intersection, officers executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, causing the vehicle to veer off the roadway and crash. Both occupants, identified as adult females, were transported to a local hospital, where they died from their injuries. The Georgia State Patrol is conducting an investigation into the incident. As of this 12/02/2024 update, the identities of the two women involved in the March 31, 2024, incident in Fayetteville, Georgia, have not been publicly disclosed.
