On March 12, 2024, law enforcement officers from the Santa Rosa Police Department, Petaluma Police Department, and the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office SWAT team engaged in a standoff at the Best Western motel located at 200 S. McDowell Blvd in Petaluma. The subject, identified as 55-year-old John Rector, was wanted for felony domestic violence, felony vehicle pursuit, felony arson, and being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.

Officers attempted to serve arrest and search warrants, during which Rector barricaded himself in a motel room, made threats against officers, and discharged his firearm multiple times. After hours of negotiation and the deployment of tear gas, officers heard a muffled gunshot from within the room. Upon entry, they found Rector with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries on March 15, 2024.

No officers or civilians were injured during the incident. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office is conducting a full death investigation to determine the exact manner and cause of death.

On March 12, 2024, at approximately 11:18 AM, 67-year-old John Drozd was crossing the 300 block of N. Tustin Street in Orange, California, when he was fatally struck by a vehicle involved in a high-speed police chase conducted by the Orange Police Department. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter. The Orange Police Department is investigating the incident.

Ripley, Ohio officer Caleb Savage chased Ryan Mitchell from Ohio into Kentucky and hunted him until he crashed. When the vehicle crashed, Mitchell died and the officer fled the scene without rendering aid. The officer resigned from the Ripley PD and has so far been indicted for charges of reckless homicide, failure to render aid and leaving the scene of an accident. Officer Caleb Savage was charged with reckless homicide.

Police arrived at a liquor store where Roosevelt Overton Jr. was robbing the business. Police allege that he had a gun and they shot and killed him. A total of six officers all opened fire on him. The sheriff withheld the bodycam video for undisclosed reasons.

This was the fourth fatal shooting for Officer Devin Inocencio who previously also killed Dontel Thompson, Charion Lockett and a 52-y/o unnamed victim. Officer Inocencio was cleared for all 4 killings and was back on patrol in April of 2024.

On 03/10/2024, Des Plaines Police responded to a report of a suicidal individual barricaded in a vehicle at the intersection of Touhy Avenue and Lee Street. Officers observed 55-year-old Scott MacDonald inside the vehicle, armed with a handgun.

The individual, 53-year-old Cole Jackson Hughes, was reported by his wife to be armed with a gun and an ax. Upon arrival, deputies found Hughes in the front yard holding what appeared to be a rifle. They issued verbal commands for over 20 minutes to de-escalate the situation.

Hughes raised the weapon toward the deputies, prompting Deputy Nicholas Rocha to fire, striking Hughes. The weapon was later determined to be an unloaded pellet rifle. Hughes was transported to Kern Medical, where he died on 03/11/2024. A Critical Incident Review Board determined the use of force was within department policy. The case has been forwarded to the District Attorney's office for further review.

A Border Patrol agent located the vehicle at the intersection of I-8 and State Route 7 near Calexico and confirmed its stolen status. The agent initiated a traffic stop on SR 7, approximately three-quarters of a mile south of Heber Road. The driver initially complied but then re-entered the vehicle and fled southbound on SR 7, turning west onto State Route 98.

On 03/08/2024, Illinois State Police SWAT and Crisis Negotiating Teams responded to a call about a suicidal man at the TA Truck Stop located at 13750 23 Mile Road in Effingham, Illinois. Officers were notified that 33-year-old Jamon S. Weaver was inside his vehicle with a handgun and threatening to harm himself.

A perimeter was established around the vehicle. Crisis negotiators maintained communication. Weaver disengaged from the conversation. A gunshot was heard from inside the vehicle. Officers forced entry into the vehicle and found him deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident is under investigation.

On March 7, 2024, Phoenix police received reports of a man in an SUV pointing a gun at passing vehicles. Maricopa College Police, already in the area, located the vehicle and confronted Andre Lamar Lindsey Jr., who was seen with a gun. During the encounter, one of the campus officers shot and killed Lindsey. No officers were injured during the incident. The Arizona Department of Public Safety is handling the investigation, and the identities of the officers involved have not been released.
