On February 2, 2024, at approximately 5 a.m., Plantation Police Department officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a Mobil gas station located at 10261 W. Broward Blvd in Plantation, Florida. A 31-year-old woman sought refuge inside the gas station to escape her boyfriend, identified as 30-year-old Roshod Graham of Jacksonville. Graham used his vehicle to ram the gas station's doors multiple times in an attempt to reach the woman.

Upon officers' arrival, Graham fled.Police escalated a chase into Lauderhill during which, Graham allegedly rammed a police vehicle. The pursuit ended when Graham's car became inoperative after hitting a median in the 1600 block of NW 31st Avenue. Graham exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Officers allege that Graham resisted arrest and attempted to forcibly take an officer's firearm. An unknown number of officers opened fire, striking Graham.

EMS transported Graham to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The names of the officers involved have not been released. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.

On 02/01/2024, the Arroyo Grande Police Department responded to reports of gunshots at the senior center located at 241 N. Courtland Street in Arroyo Grande, California. Upon arrival, officers discovered the apartment manager deceased from gunshot wounds. Resident David Falcon, 66, was later found locked inside an apartment unit. Police deployed drones and established a standoff.

During the standoff, Falcon reportedly committed suicide. Reports indicate that the dispute stemmed from Falcon’s allegations that the apartment manager had unlawfully entered his apartment and physically harmed his cat, leading to extensive veterinary care. Falcon is alleged to have shot the manager following this confrontation. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and Falcon’s death are ongoing and are being conducted by the Arroyo Grande Police Department and independent oversight agencies.

On January 29, 2024, at approximately 8:00 PM, 58-year-old John Robert Smith of Decatur, Georgia, arrived at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center in Decatur, exhibiting suicidal ideations. Hospital staff escorted Smith to the emergency room for assistance. While in the ER, Smith produced a knife and threatened to harm himself. VA police officers responded to the ER. Smith allegedly refused to drop the knife. Police allege that Smith advanced toward a staff member while still holding the knife. An officer fired shots, fatally wounding Smith. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Smith had a known history of mental health struggles and had sought help at the facility.

Upshur County deputies were sent to bayberry Road where Juan Lara was allegedly suicidal. Police arrived and found him with 2 guns and began shooting beanbags at the despondent man. He committed suicide under police duress under the attack. He left behind a family of five.

On 01/29/2024, Michael James Yanacheak, a 75-year-old White male, died following the use of a Taser by Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Deputy Riley Kampsen during an eviction in Willmar, Minnesota. Deputies were executing a court-ordered eviction at the time of the incident. Yanacheak reportedly resisted attempts to remove him from the property, escalating to a physical confrontation.

During the altercation, Deputy Kampsen deployed a Taser to subdue Yanacheak. After being tased, Yanacheak experienced a medical emergency. Yanacheak was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an independent investigation into the incident. Findings will be reviewed by the Kandiyohi County Attorney’s Office to determine if the use of force was justified.

On January 29, 2024, Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a residence on Ingersol Road in Fife Lake, Kalkaska County. Upon arrival, officers attempted to make contact with a 35-year-old male.

The man ignored verbal commands and moved into a wooded area near the residence. A K9 unit was deployed to assist officers in locating him. Officers reported that during the encounter, the man had a firearm. Police opened fire, striking and killing him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dodge County deputies were allegedly conducting an undisclosed investigation and tried to contact a man in a residence in the 2500 block of East 34th Boulevard in Fremont. The man refused to speak with police who advanced to hear him firing a shot upstairs, having committed suicide under police duress. Police never explained the fatal incident.

On January 28, 2024, at approximately 2 p.m., Palm Bay Police Department officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 400 block of Forgal Avenue NE. Upon arrival, officers encountered 24-year-old Brandon Kapas, who was reported by family members to be armed and exhibiting erratic behavior. Officers attempted to engage Kapas, deploying a Taser, which proved ineffective. Kapas then opened fire, injuring Officers Stephen Ball and Nicholas Franze. During the altercation, Kapas fatally shot his 78-year-old grandfather, William Michael Kapas, who was attempting to intervene. Additional officers arrived and returned fire, killing Kapas. Subsequent investigations revealed that Kapas had earlier killed 76-year-old retired priest Father Robert Hoeffner and his 69-year-old sister, Sally Hoeffner, at their home on Kamloops Street NW. An arsenal of weapons was found in a vehicle Kapas had been using. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
