On 01/24/2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., an Ada County Sheriff's deputy on patrol observed 37-year-old Jeremiah Gaver covered in a tarp and holding a cane, peering over backyard fences on South Maverick Way in Boise. When approached, Gaver refused to identify himself, explain his actions, or remove his hand from beneath the tarp. Additional deputies and Boise Police officers arrived and issued multiple warnings, stating that non-compliance would result in the use of a less-lethal beanbag round and deployment of a K9 unit.

After approximately 30 minutes, a deputy fired two beanbag rounds. A canine was then released and sicced on him. Gaver stabbed the dog and fled toward an open field. Police chased him to a gas station near the Cole and Amity intersection. Police fired Tasers at him, causing him to fall. A second canine was sent and attacked him. Gaver stabbed this dog multiple times in self-defense. Four detectives and one officer all fired at the same time, striking Gaver.

Gaver was transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m. The Ada County Coroner's Office listed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds, with the manner of death classified as homicide. The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force, led by the Meridian Police Department, is investigating the incident. Pittsburgh Police received a ShotSpotter alert that gunshots were heard and arrived in the 1900 block of Huron Street. Police heard a noisy argument and claim there were shots heard. Police shot and killed Austyn Cousins. When asked by media whether Cousins had actually fired any shots, police replied that they did not know. On January 22, 2024, at approximately 5:46 a.m., the Eureka Police Department responded to a report of a male juvenile with a significant neck laceration. The juvenile alleged that his uncle, Daniel Martinez, 43, had assaulted him at a residence in the 1400 block of Union Street in Eureka, California. The victim was transported to a local medical facility for treatment of severe but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers learned that Martinez had barricaded himself in a second-story bedroom with additional occupants, including an adult female and three male juveniles aged 4 to 12. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were dispatched to the scene. Negotiations continued throughout the day, resulting in the safe release of all hostages by approximately 1:00 p.m.

Despite prolonged negotiations, Martinez remained non-compliant and refused to surrender. At approximately 4:58 p.m., an officer-involved shooting occurred when contact was made with Martinez. He was struck by gunfire, received immediate medical attention, and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Deputies Johnathan Waxler and Colton Ross of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Both deputies were placed on paid administrative leave, per agency protocol. On January 22, 2024, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, including SWAT units, responded to a welfare check at a residence in the 200 block of East Sims Road in Brentwood, California. Craig Goatley, 37, had barricaded himself inside a bedroom after allegedly shooting and killing 40-year-old Shara Kent. Through the door, Goatley informed officers that Kent was deceased and refused to exit the room.

On 01/19/2024, Twin Falls Police Department officers responded to a domestic violence call reporting gunshots. Upon arrival, a female occupant exited the residence, while a male subject barricaded himself inside. The Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was activated and engaged in prolonged negotiations. After hours of attempted communication, SWAT officers breached the home, at which point the individual died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On January 18, 2024, 20-year-old Fernando Barajas-Reyes was killed while riding as a front-seat passenger in a 2016 Ford Fusion that crashed following a police pursuit in Stanislaus County. The pursuit began when Ceres Police attempted a traffic stop and the vehicle fled southbound on Highway 99. After exiting at Mitchell Road, the car sped east on Keyes Road and collided with a Ford Mustang at Geer Road. Barajas-Reyes was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash also left two other passengers and the teen driver of the Mustang hospitalized. The California Highway Patrol is investigating.

Cleveland Police chased a vehicle after ShotSpotter alerted them. The man fled to a home and locked himself in. Cleveland Police and Cuyahoga deputies and SWAT besieged the home for hours, finally shot and killed Perkins, alleging he had fired shots.

On 01/18/2024, the Bakersfield Police Department responded to reports of shots fired near Chester Avenue in Bakersfield, California. Officers encountered Alejandro Avalos, also known as Esmeraldo Martinez, a 46-year-old visitor from Mexico. During the interaction, officers shot and killed Avalos.

The circumstances leading to the shooting have not been disclosed. Investigations are ongoing, with oversight from the Bakersfield Police Department and independent review agencies to determine the events leading to Avalos’s death.

Precinct 3 Constables chased a motorcycle for a license plate mismatch at high speed until the motorcycle crashed into a diesel fuel truck and was run over by the truck and killed. Police claim the motorcycle was reported stolen. Police claim that they had called off the chase just before the fatal crash.

On January 17, 2024, at approximately 9:15 PM, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of 49-year-old Christopher Clyde Valentine, Sr. who had barricaded himself inside a restroom at Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center in Macon, Georgia. Valentine had recently faced shoplifting charges and alleged probation violations, and was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis and feared police. Law enforcement, including SWAT, K-9 units, and hostage negotiators, responded to the scene.

As officers attempted to negotiate, shots were heard from inside the restroom. SWAT units set up a perimeter and intensified efforts to communicate with Valentine. After several hours of pressure and negotiations, the SWAT team began making entry into the restroom. At approximately 12:45 AM on January 18, 2024, Valentine took his own life. His son Christopher Clyde Valentine Jr. would die from suicide under police duress months later also.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office was actively engaged in this situation with a militarized response, deploying SWAT and other specialized units. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an independent review of the incident.

The Amarillo Police Department found someone who had been shot dead and suspected 18-year-old Jhequaylen Elija Badillo. They chased him on foot between houses and found him, having shot himself and committed suicide under police duress.
