Alberto Vasquez Jr. was wanted by police for a homicide in DC and a carjacking for questioning. When police found him near a laundromat at 7575 Annapolis Road, he was arrested and died during arrest. His cause of death has not been revealed by police so far.

On January 29, 2024, at approximately 8:00 PM, 58-year-old John Robert Smith of Decatur, Georgia, arrived at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center in Decatur, exhibiting suicidal ideations. Hospital staff escorted Smith to the emergency room for assistance. While in the ER, Smith produced a knife and threatened to harm himself. VA police officers responded to the ER. Smith allegedly refused to drop the knife. Police allege that Smith advanced toward a staff member while still holding the knife. An officer fired shots, fatally wounding Smith. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Smith had a known history of mental health struggles and had sought help at the facility.

Subsequent investigations revealed that Kapas had earlier killed 76-year-old retired priest Father Robert Hoeffner and his 69-year-old sister, Sally Hoeffner, at their home on Kamloops Street NW. An arsenal of weapons was found in a vehicle Kapas had been using. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.

On January 25, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Wichita Police Department officers initiated a vehicle pursuit near East Bayley and Schweiter Drive after locating a vehicle reportedly stolen at knifepoint earlier that evening. The driver, 43-year-old Larry K. Armour, drove until East Harry and Green Street, where he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot with officers in pursuit. He then forcibly entered a residence in the 2400 block of East Harry Street, armed with a knife, and took the male occupant hostage.

A tactical team comprising Wichita Police Department officers, Sedgwick County deputies, and police negotiators arrived at the residence just before 1 a.m. At approximately 3 a.m., a deputy observed Armour through a window standing over the hostage and threatening him with a large knife, shouting that he would kill him. The deputy fired one shot, striking Armour. Armour was transported to a local hospital, where he died.

Indianapolis Metro Police and the East District Violence Reduction Team chased a vehicle to arrest a man on parole who was known to have committed firearm violations. Police got into a shootout and shot and killed him.

A Border Patrol agent from the Las Cruces Station responded in a Mobile Video Surveillance System truck, along with another agent in a marked vehicle and a K9 handler in an unmarked unit.The K9 unit tried to traffic-stop the vehicle. At least 2 CBP units chased the vehicle. The agents admitted that they turned off their lights and sirens due to bad weather. The logic of this explanation is not clear. Police allege they briefly lost sight of the vehicle and found it crashed. This is a common explanation in police hunting migrants and other vehicles as it shifts responsibility away from officers who “lose” a vehicle they are chasing moments before a fatal crash. One Guatemalan woman died in the crash. This fatality happened as part of an Operation Lone Star migrant hunt.

Agents from the US Marshals Service and ATF arrived at a motel on Promenade Boulevard to arrest a man for undisclosed felony offenses. They engaged in a shootout with the man and shot and killed him. Police did not identify him publicly.

A woman called 911 and said Brian Scott Hutson had just killed her father and was now going to kill himself. Llano County deputies arrived and the man was seen fleeing across the street. Upon making contact with deputies, he committed suicide under police duress.

CBP Border Patrol chased a vehicle, causing a collision that killed a third party motorist. Texas has been admonished by DOJ this month for a pattern of excessive deaths due to car chases under the state’s Operation Lone Star program which hunts migrants at high speed, causing many fatal crashes. This represents another such death.

On January 24, 2024, at approximately 6:45 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a call regarding a man, 41-year-old Clifford Brooks, experiencing a mental health crisis. Brooks was initially cooperative and agreed to be transported for medical evaluation. However, during transport, Brooks became agitated and assaulted a firefighter-paramedic, fleeing the scene after pinning her against a wall.

Officers attempted to detain Brooks, but he became combative, assaulting an officer and fleeing into traffic. After crawling under a truck, he emerged holding a metal object. Despite multiple commands to drop the object, Brooks advanced toward Officer Claude Jackson, who then discharged his firearm, striking and killing him.

The shooting is under investigation by the Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team. The U.S. Attorney’s Office determined there was insufficient evidence to pursue charges against Officer Jackson, concluding that the officer acted within the scope of his duties.

On January 24, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers from the Sioux City Police Department observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed near Gordon Drive and Spalding Street. The vehicle, a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by 40-year-old Melissa Thede of Churdan, Iowa, did not stop when officers attempted a traffic stop.

Officers escalated a high-speed pursuit to speeds in excess of 100 mph. The pursuit continued into a more congested area, prompting supervisors to direct officers to stop the chase.

Immediately after the pursuit ended, Thede’s vehicle, still speeding from the chase, collided with another car at the intersection of Gordon Drive and Spalding Street. Her vehicle overturned upon impact and came to rest in the roadway. Emergency responders transported her to MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The Iowa State Patrol is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Findings will be reviewed by the Woodbury County Attorney’s Office.
