On January 27, 2024, at approximately 4:07 p.m., Phoenix police responded to a robbery at a pawn shop near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road where Guy Vogel and Felicia Evans had stolen firearms from the store before fleeing the scene. Officers located them at 21st Avenue and Indian School Road and attempted to give commands. Vogel refused to comply, and a 40mm less-lethal launcher was used to try to subdue him. Vogel then fled on foot and tried to enter a truck. Police re-engaged, and Vogel reportedly pointed a gun at officers, leading to a fatal police shooting. Vogel was transported to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead. Evans was arrested without injury. The investigation is ongoing, with police working to confirm the details of the officers involved and the stolen firearms.

Upon arrival, officers encountered 24-year-old Brandon Kapas, who was reported by family members to be armed and exhibiting erratic behavior. Officers attempted to engage Kapas, deploying a Taser, which proved ineffective. Kapas then opened fire, injuring Officers Stephen Ball and Nicholas Franze. During the altercation, Kapas fatally shot his 78-year-old grandfather, William Michael Kapas, who was attempting to intervene. Additional officers arrived and returned fire, killing Kapas. Subsequent investigations revealed that Kapas had earlier killed 76-year-old retired priest Father Robert Hoeffner and his 69-year-old sister, Sally Hoeffner, at their home on Kamloops Street NW. An arsenal of weapons was found in a vehicle Kapas had been using. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.

On January 25, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Wichita Police Department officers initiated a vehicle pursuit near East Bayley and Schweiter Drive after locating a vehicle reportedly stolen at knifepoint earlier that evening. The driver, 43-year-old Larry K. Armour, drove until East Harry and Green Street, where he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot with officers in pursuit. He then forcibly entered a residence in the 2400 block of East Harry Street, armed with a knife, and took the male occupant hostage.

A tactical team comprising Wichita Police Department officers, Sedgwick County deputies, and police negotiators arrived at the residence just before 1 a.m. At approximately 3 a.m., a deputy observed Armour through a window standing over the hostage and threatening him with a large knife, shouting that he would kill him. The deputy fired one shot, striking Armour. Armour was transported to a local hospital, where he died.

On January 24, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers from the Sioux City Police Department observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed near Gordon Drive and Spalding Street. The vehicle, a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by 40-year-old Melissa Thede of Churdan, Iowa, did not stop when officers attempted a traffic stop.

Officers escalated a high-speed pursuit to speeds in excess of 100 mph. The pursuit continued into a more congested area, prompting supervisors to direct officers to stop the chase.

Immediately after the pursuit ended, Thede’s vehicle, still speeding from the chase, collided with another car at the intersection of Gordon Drive and Spalding Street. Her vehicle overturned upon impact and came to rest in the roadway. Emergency responders transported her to MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

On 01/24/2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., an Ada County Sheriff's deputy on patrol observed 37-year-old Jeremiah Gaver covered in a tarp and holding a cane, peering over backyard fences on South Maverick Way in Boise. When approached, Gaver refused to identify himself, explain his actions, or remove his hand from beneath the tarp. Additional deputies and Boise Police officers arrived and issued multiple warnings, stating that non-compliance would result in the use of a less-lethal beanbag round and deployment of a K9 unit.

After approximately 30 minutes, a deputy fired two beanbag rounds. A canine was then released and sicced on him. Gaver stabbed the dog and fled toward an open field. Police chased him to a gas station near the Cole and Amity intersection. Police fired Tasers at him, causing him to fall. A second canine was sent and attacked him. Gaver stabbed this dog multiple times in self-defense. Four detectives and one officer all fired at the same time, striking Gaver.

Gaver was transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m. The Ada County Coroner's Office listed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds, with the manner of death classified as homicide. The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force, led by the Meridian Police Department, is investigating the incident. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol.

Pittsburgh Police received a ShotSpotter alert that gunshots were heard and arrived in the 1900 block of Huron Street. Police heard a noisy argument and claim there were shots heard. On January 22, 2024, at approximately 5:46 a.m., the Eureka Police Department responded to a report of a male juvenile with a significant neck laceration. The juvenile alleged that his uncle, Daniel Martinez, 43, had assaulted him at a residence in the 1400 block of Union Street in Eureka, California. The victim was transported to a local medical facility for treatment of severe but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers learned that Martinez had barricaded himself in a second-story bedroom with additional occupants, including an adult female and three male juveniles aged 4 to 12. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were dispatched to the scene. Negotiations continued throughout the day, resulting in the safe release of all hostages by approximately 1:00 p.m.

Despite prolonged negotiations, Martinez remained non-compliant and refused to surrender. At approximately 4:58 p.m., an officer-involved shooting occurred when contact was made with Martinez. He was struck by gunfire, received immediate medical attention, and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Deputies Johnathan Waxler and Colton Ross of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Both deputies were placed on paid administrative leave, per agency protocol. The Humboldt County Critical Incident Response Team, led by the Eureka Police Department and the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office, is conducting an investigation into the incident.

On January 22, 2024, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, including SWAT units, responded to a welfare check at a residence in the 200 block of East Sims Road in Brentwood, California. Craig Goatley, 37, had barricaded himself inside a bedroom after allegedly shooting and killing 40-year-old Shara Kent. Through the door, Goatley informed officers that Kent was deceased and refused to exit the room.

Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution while SWAT negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation. The standoff lasted approximately 12 hours. After negotiations failed and a gunshot was heard from within the residence, SWAT made a forced entry into the bedroom. Officers discovered Kent deceased from a gunshot wound and Goatley suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Goatley was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the incident, with oversight from independent review agencies to assess the circumstances leading up to the fatalities.
