On January 14, 2024, Wethersfield Police escalated a pursuit of a vehicle that was driving erratically. The vehicle, which had been stolen in Hartford, crashed into a tree and then into a house on Church Street in Wethersfield while police were in hot pursuit. Tragically, 14-year-old Novelle Nesmith, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was trapped and later pronounced dead.

The other two juveniles in the vehicle were injured and taken to the hospital. One juvenile was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, while the other was released after medical care.

Novelle Nesmith's family has since called for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the police chase.

During a struggle to gain control, Hibbard drew the handgun and fired, striking Officer Hermsmeier in the right upper arm. Officer VanderMaiden, fearing for both officers' lives, drew his service weapon and fired two rounds, fatally wounding Hibbard. Officer Hermsmeier was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Blessing Hospital. Hibbard was transported to the same hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
