On 11/18/2023, law enforcement responded to an incident involving Jashaune Moore following a homicide investigation connected to a Sebring apartment at 2180 Lakeview Drive where a 27 year old woman was fatally shot. Authorities later located Moore in Sunrise and established a perimeter as he barricaded himself during an extended standoff. Officers attempted to negotiate and take him into custody. IMPD traffic-stopped a vehicle because they thought the driver had a warrant for a previous gun theft. When the vehicle stopped, both the driver and passenger ran away. Police allege that the passenger Deandre Houston “pulled an object from his waistband” and jumped over a fence. Police shot and killed him as he was jumping. Police later admitted that they shot the wrong man and that the warrant was for the driver, not passenger Leandre Houston whom they killed. Police allege that they found a gun somewhere nearby the body. Police did not answer the question whether that was Houston’s gun and whether he had actually used it.
The warrant against the driver was for a previous unlawful weapons possession. Police made no accusations against Leandre Houston and it appears that he was not accused of anything when he was killed except possibly fear of police.
This was the 16th shooting this year by Indianapolis Metro PD.
