On December 29, 2021, at approximately 4:25 a.m., an off-duty Montgomery County Police Department officer was alerted to a shooting in front of a restaurant at 904 Bonifant Street in Silver Spring. The off-duty officer relayed a description of a white Mercedes-Benz to on-duty officers. At 4:29 a.m., officers observed the vehicle near Dartmouth Avenue and Wayne Avenue and conducted a traffic stop.

During the stop, 27-year-old Osman Sesay exited the rear passenger side of the vehicle, contrary to officers' orders, and allegedly pointed a handgun at them. In response, four officers—Nathan Lenhart, Karli Dorsey, Dennis Tejada, and Eric Kessler—fired their weapons, striking Sesay. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division conducted an investigation and released body-worn camera footage. The Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and declined to file charges, concluding the officers' actions were justified.

On December 29, 2021, at approximately 7:00 p.m., deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call from a family member of Deputy Christopher Former. The family member reported that Former had made suicidal threats during a phone call. Deputies arrived at his residence on Bonita Bluff Court in Ruskin, Florida, and made brief contact with him. Former then barricaded himself inside the home and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Algona police responded to reports shortly before 1 p.m. of a domestic violence situation involving an armed, suicidal man and three hostages. There was an existing no-contact order in effect between the man and at least one of the hostages. Police attempted to remove the hostages but were fired upon by the man. Officers retreated and called for backup. After several hours of negotiation attempts, the team concluded there was still a potential threat to the hostages. Police initiated a rescue mission, successfully removing all three hostages without injury. Shortly after the rescue, two officers encountered the man and shot and killed him.

On December 27, 2021, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Lake Charles Police Department officers responded to reports of a man with a handgun in the 1000 block of Mill Street. The individual, identified as 22-year-old Christopher Thomas, allegedly fired multiple shots toward a residence before fleeing on foot. Later that night, Thomas returned to the same residence and fired additional shots, injuring an occupant in the foot. Officers located Thomas at a residence in the 2000 block of Cline Street around 3:00 a.m. on December 28. He exited the house with a handgun and body armor but went inside again. Thomas then fired shots at officers from the front driveway. Officers opened fire and killed him.

On December 27, 2021, Robert Michael George, 53, was being pulled over by Punxsutawney Borough Police Department officers before 11 p.m. for several observed moving violations. George drove away. Police escalated a high-speed chase into Big Run, Pennsylvania. While attempting to navigate a curve in the road, George lost control of his Dodge Caliber and crashed into the Best Kawasaki dealership. He died in the crash. The incident is under investigation.

On December 26, 2021, 13-year-old Stanley "SJ" Davis III was reportedly seen operating a dirt bike on Boynton Beach Boulevard. Police attempted a traffic stop. Surveillance footage shows Davis refueling at a gas station and then being followed by a police vehicle. Police escalated a chase during which Davis lost control of the dirt bike on North Federal Highway, collided with a curb, and was thrown into a street sign. He died. The Florida Highway Patrol and Boynton Beach Police Department Internal Affairs unit were put in charge of the investigation.

Wichita police officers arrived at the apartment of Malik Rogers to arrest him on domestic violence charges. Rogers did not comply when officers made contact. Both officers reportedly deployed Tasers in an attempt to subdue him, but Rogers locked himself in a bathroom. When officers forced their way into the bathroom, Rogers reportedly had a gun pointed at them and fired multiple shots, injuring one officer in the arm and the other in the leg. Rogers then shot and killed himself.

On 12/25/2021, Gaudencio Gerardo Luna-Vasquez, 52, died when the vehicle he was riding in crashed into a tree while fleeing U.S. Border Patrol agents in eastern San Diego County. The driver, Kevin Antonio Quevedo-Moncada, was driving at high speeds and lost control during the pursuit off Otay Lakes Road after Border Patrol attempted to stop the vehicle. Luna-Vasquez, one of three people in the car, died at the scene. Two other passengers were critically injured. Quevedo-Moncada later pleaded guilty to federal charges and was sentenced to over four years in prison.

On December 24, 2021, officers responded to a domestic violence incident at 203 Mers Way in Dolgeville, New York. Carson Dobson, 24, allegedly broke into his mother's home and stabbed her multiple times before leaving the residence. Troopers Andrew Gorinshek and Jennifer Greenwood of the New York State Police, along with a Dolgeville Police Department officer, located Dobson a short distance away.

Dobson was reportedly armed with a knife and a sword. Despite commands from police to drop the weapons, Dobson advanced toward the officers. All three officers deployed Tasers, which were reportedly ineffective. Dobson continued moving toward the officers, prompting Trooper Gorinshek to discharge his firearm, fatally striking Dobson.

On 12/23/2021, around 7 p.m., the Austin Police Department was dispatched to 1201 W Oakland Avenue following a report that Kokou Christopher Fiafonou had forced his way into his ex-wife's residence during a domestic dispute. The ex-wife managed to escape, but Fiafonou remained inside, holding her 13-year-old daughter at knifepoint. Upon arrival, officers encountered Fiafonou with the child, who had been stabbed several times. In the ensuing confrontation, an officer used deadly force, shooting and killing Fiafonou to end the threat. The daughter was hospitalized with serious injuries but survived the attack. The incident is under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

On 12/23/2021, Akron Police Department officers responded to a reported home invasion at a residence on the 2400 block of 26th St SW. James W. Gross allegedly broke into the home of his estranged wife, where she, her boyfriend, and their dog were hiding in a bedroom. Gross reportedly broke through the bedroom door, holding a knife to the woman’s throat.

Officers located the vehicle shortly afterward and attempted a traffic stop. The man fled, initiating a police pursuit. During the chase, the man reportedly fired shots at pursuing officers' vehicles. After the chase ended, officers discovered the man deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. On December 22, 2021, shortly before 6:00 p.m., a Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Deputy and a Livonia Police Department officer responded to a disturbance call on Cleveland Road in Fordoche, Louisiana. Residents reported that 48-year-old Jessie Lee Gaither IV had driven his truck into the front of a residence, causing substantial damage. Gaither exited the vehicle with a knife in one hand and a gun in the other. He left and walked up the street. Officers engaged Gaither in an altercation and fired a Taser at him. Gaither discharged a flare gun at the officers. An officer opened fire and killed him. Gaither was pronounced dead by the Pointe Coupee Parish Coroner's Office.

On December 22, 2021, at approximately 9:49 a.m., Pennsylvania State Police responded to a call from the White Haven Police Department regarding Ronald D. Hoffman, who was reported to have arrived at a residence on Anthony's Road in Foster Township carrying a rifle, waving it around, and screaming unintelligibly.

Upon arrival, officers encountered Hoffman carrying a dark-colored hunting rifle with a scope. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Hoffman raised the rifle to the "lower ready" position, pointing it at the officers. In response, a state trooper fired a single shot, fatally wounding Hoffman.

On 12/22/2021, officers from the Albion Department of Public Safety attempted to pull over Brian Douglas Laxton for driving without license plates on his vehicle. Laxton fled the scene, leading to a high-speed chase westbound on Interstate 94. During the pursuit, Laxton allegedly fired shots at pursuing officers. The chase concluded when a Calhoun County deputy executed a maneuver to stop Laxton's car by ramming into it. Laxton then fled on foot, armed with a handgun, and attempted to enter an occupied home near Oak Hill Drive and Willow Street in Battle Creek. Officer Christof Klein of the Battle Creek Police Department ordered Laxton to drop the weapon, but Laxton turned towards Klein with the gun, prompting Klein to shoot and kill him.

On December 21, 2021, at approximately 3:30 p.m., deputies from the Rankin County Sheriff's Office responded to a call regarding a drug overdose at 856 Isobel Dean Street, Brandon, Mississippi. Upon arrival, they found Robert Rigby Rushton stuck in mud inside his vehicle. As Rushton exited the vehicle, he was observed holding a knife in each hand. Despite commands from deputies to drop the knives, Rushton advanced towards them, resulting in the deputies discharging their firearms, fatally shooting him.

On December 21, 2021, at approximately 6:52 p.m., Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residence on Larry Cook Road in Pitkin, Louisiana, following reports of a woman threatening to harm herself. Upon arrival, a man exited the residence and informed deputies that 44-year-old Chantel Jean Myers was inside, threatening to shoot herself. He also reported that Myers had fired a shot inside the home before their arrival and provided deputies with a note believed to be a suicide note. Deputies escalated a standoff with a noisy public address system, which caused her to hide inside and make threats toward approaching officers. After she exited the home with a gun and walked toward police, she positioned herself between two parked patrol cars with a gun allegedly pointed at a deputy. The deputy opened fire and killed her. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office.

On 12/21/2021, Brendan Patrick Pinkston was reported to 911 for allegedly trespassing with a gun in Burton, Michigan. He had left the property by the time law enforcement arrived. Four officers, three from the Burton Police Department and one from the Genesee County Sheriff's Office, responded to the scene. When they located Pinkston, he fled on foot and allegedly fired at the officers, injuring Burton Police Officer Dalton Christie and Genesee County Sheriff's Deputy Brandon Fachting. Officers returned fire, resulting in Pinkston's death.

On December 20, 2021, at approximately 4:10 a.m., uniformed officers from the New York City Police Department responded to reports of a man armed with a knife and a gun near 1090 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, New York. Upon arrival, officers observed Eudes Pierre, 26, holding a knife in one hand while keeping his other hand concealed in his coat pocket.

A foot pursuit ensued, during which officers attempted to incapacitate Pierre using Tasers, but the efforts were reportedly unsuccessful. On 12/20/2021 Patrick Enos Jr., father of four who enjoyed hunting, fishing and repairing cars, ran a red light and was speeding when he collided with another driver on Highway 11 near Kipimana Street on Hawai‘i Island. Enos’ family believes that a police pursuit of his vehicle was a major contributing factor to the crash and that the chase should have been terminated under existing pursuit policies. Investigations remain ongoing and the family has retained an attorney to determine police liability. Four years later, the family is searching for answers. Police reportedly will not admit they chased him and caused the fatal crash but eyewitnesses confirmed this.

On December 19, 2021, at approximately 7:43 p.m., a deputy from the Chemung County Sheriff's Office observed a 2018 Honda motorcycle traveling east at a high rate of speed on W. Water Street in West Elmira, New York. The deputy attempted to stop the motorcycle, which had been reported stolen out of Ithaca. The motorcyclist, identified as 36-year-old James Thigpen, initially slowed down but then turned around and sped westbound on W. Water Street, driving against the flow of one-way traffic.
The deputy did not pursue the motorcycle further and radioed the Communications Center to report the situation. Shortly afterward, the motorcycle collided with a 2016 Ford Fusion. Thigpen was pronounced dead at the scene.

On December 19, 2021, 62-year-old Walter Passmore of Loganville was killed by a police pursuit in Walton County, Georgia. Police had escalated a chase when deputies attempted to stop Passmore's vehicle for a traffic violation. Passmore did not stop. Police began a chase that ended when his vehicle collided with another car at the intersection of Highway 11 and Monroe Jersey Road. Passmore was life-flighted to Atlanta Medical Center with serious injuries and later succumbed to those injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Piedmont Walton Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident.

On 12/19/2021, at approximately 5: 57 p.m., the Detroit Police Department received multiple calls reporting Nakita Williams waving a gun at customers and employees at the entrance of a Sunoco gas station located at 15201 7 Mile E in Detroit. Four officers responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they found Williams pointing what was later identified as an Airsoft gun at customers. The officers then shot and killed her.

On December 18, 2021, at approximately 7 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers responded to a call about a man who had forced his way into his ex-wife's home on Blairbeth Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. The ex-wife escaped, but the man reportedly held their 13-year-old daughter at knifepoint inside the residence. When officers arrived, the man stabbed the girl multiple times. An officer shot and killed him. The girl was transported to a hospital with serious injuries but survived the incident.

On 12/18/2021, around 5 a.m., Vineland Police Department officers responded to a disturbance at the Penn Lincoln Mobile Home Park involving a backhoe. Joshua Gonzalez, 20, was operating the construction equipment, causing significant damage to residences and vehicles. Officers attempted for approximately 30 minutes to stop Gonzalez. During the encounter, Officer Louis Platania shot and killed Gonzalez.

On December 17, 2021, at approximately 4:00 a.m., a 14-year-old boy called the police to report that his mother's boyfriend had arrived at their apartment on Alpha Court in Lake Clarke Shores, Florida, armed with a gun. The boy reported hearing a gunshot and then saw the man leave the apartment. Upon arrival, officers heard another gunshot. On December 16, 2021, at approximately 3:10 a.m., an off-duty NYPD lieutenant was leaving La Boom nightclub at 56-15 Northern Boulevard in Queens when he was confronted by several armed individuals wearing masks. The men attempted to rob the officer, possibly targeting his jewelry.

The officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Elmhurst Hospital in critical but stable condition. On December 16, 2021, at approximately 2:30 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department responded to a report of an abandoned Chevrolet Impala with its doors open on Old Hickory Boulevard West in Madison. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire from a nearby wooded area. Officers arrived and believed the gunfire was directed toward them. For about 40 minutes, they repeatedly ordered the individual to surrender. The individual, later identified as 39-year-old Anthony Marcell Phillips, emerged from the woods, appeared to ingest a substance, and shouted expletives. He then fired two shots at the officers. Officer Ricardo Cruz returned fire with a shotgun, fatally wounding Phillips. A semi-automatic 9 mm pistol was recovered from the scene. Phillips had a warrant for tampering with an electronic monitoring device and was a convicted sex offender. No officers were injured in the incident. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the shooting.

On December 15, 2021, at approximately 5:30 a.m., Elkhart Police Department officers responded to a report of a man attempting to break a liquor store window using a bicycle near the intersection of West Hively and Benham Avenues in Elkhart, Indiana. Upon arrival, officers encountered 20-year-old Jahad Patterson in a nearby parking lot.
When officers identified themselves and ordered Patterson to show his hands, he allegedly drew a firearm and began raising it toward Officer Scott Swanson. In response, Officer Swanson and Sergeant Benjimin Martin discharged their weapons, fatally striking Patterson.

A .380 caliber handgun was recovered from Patterson, with his finger still inside the trigger guard. The Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office later determined that the officers' use of deadly force was justified, citing self-defense.

On December 15, 2021, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Memphis Police officers were investigating a stolen 2014 Ford Fusion reported missing from Olive Branch, Mississippi. The vehicle was located in the drive-thru line of a McDonald's restaurant at 3120 S 3rd St in Memphis. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver, later identified as 25-year-old Kayla Lucas, accelerated in reverse, striking a police vehicle. An officer opened fire, striking Lucas, who was pronounced dead at the scene.The family of Kayla Lucas filed a lawsuit, claiming that the use of force was excessive and wrongful, asserting that Lucas posed no immediate threat to officers when she was shot.
