On 06/27/2025, Winston-Salem Police officers responded to a disturbance call involving weapons at a residence on the 1000 block of Nancy Lane. Officers attempted to arrest Antonio Irene Betancourt, who had outstanding weapons warrants, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Betancourt resisted arrest, drew a handgun, and shot one officer in the ballistic vest. Another officer returned fire, striking and killing Betancourt at the scene. The injured officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent review of the incident.

On 06/27/2025, around 2:00 p.m., the U.S. Marshals Service WANTED Task Force attempted to apprehend Edgar Cardenas near S. 32nd Street and Baseline Road in Mesa, Arizona. Cardenas, a gang member wanted on multiple felony warrants including aggravated assault, domestic violence, and weapons offenses, drove away as agents moved in. During the stop attempt, Cardenas allegedly fired multiple rounds at officers, prompting them to return fire. He was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured. The East Valley Critical Incident Response Team is conducting an independent investigation.

On 06/27/2025, at approximately 10:03 p.m., Portland Police Bureau officers responded to a welfare check at an apartment on North Argyle Way in the Kenton neighborhood. A man was reportedly flooding his unit and displaying knives through a window. When officers arrived, the man became unresponsive. Officers began CPR and called in paramedics staged nearby. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave, and the Portland Police Homicide Unit is investigating in coordination with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office.

On 06/27/2025, around 9:28 p.m., Deputy Brandon Gaede, 30, with the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a report of illegal fireworks at a residence on 1st Street in Phillipsburg, Kansas. While attempting to arrest 27-year-old Kolton Griffith, a struggle broke out. Griffith produced a concealed handgun and shot Deputy Gaede. Gaede returned fire, killing Griffith. Deputy Gaede was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation.

On June 27, 2025, Allen entered a branch of Mercantile Bank on State Street in Saginaw Township and demanded money from the single employee present. The employee, on a phone call, alerted authorities via 9-1-1. Officers and the MSP Emergency Response Team responded, and Allen barricaded the branch for approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, taking the employee hostage and making demands that included $10,000 cash, a Faygo soda, and potato chips. Law enforcement deployed a drone to deliver the food items to Allen in an effort to secure the hostage’s release. At one point, Allen used the hostage as a human shield while opening the bank door to retrieve the delivery. A trooper positioned about 115 yards away fired one shot, fatally striking Allen and ending the standoff. The Michigan Attorney General’s Office concluded the trooper’s use of force was a justified defense of others.

On 06/27/2025 at approximately 7:00 p.m., Randy Lee Johnson, 62, was driving a 2003 Jeep Liberty northbound on Red White and Blue Road when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a southbound Nissan Altima. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
